Crimes and Law Enforcement THE BELOW LISTED INCIDENTS WERE SUBMITTED BY INDIVIDUALS OF BAYVIEW STATION: In the past month, the SFPD and the CHP have lost officers to drivers who either have no license or have a suspended license. While this may seem like a small crime, these drivers are among the most dangerous people in our society and they can often kill using a 2 ton weapon. The SFPD STOP Program is geared to weed out these drivers and prevent them from doing harm to the innocent. Thursday, August 17, 2006, 100 block of Dakota, midnight, Loaded Firearm/narcotics (Case # ): Plainclothes officers were on Dakota Street when they were hailed by a citizen. The citizen wanted to know if they wanted to buy crack (this is a true story). The officers said yes and the citizen held out his hand for payment. A female friend of the seller looked in the car and finally said, They the police. The officers jumped out as the two suspects tried to run away. Unfortunately, they were no match for the officers and they tripped trying to get away. A pat search on the male suspect, sent a gun flying down his pant leg and on to the ground. The suspect yelled, I need that for my protection. But then realizing what he just said then said, I just found that. The female suspect was searched and a large quantity of crack cocaine was located. The couple was booked on narcotics and weapons charges at Bayview Station. Thursday, August 17, 2006, Bayshore and Silver, 8:30 AM, Warrant arrest for driving with a suspended license/narcotics (Case # ): The ever alert Officer Lamma saw a car make a left turn without yielding to on coming traffic, causing the on coming traffic to slam on their brakes to avoid a collision. Officer Lamma stopped the driver a few blocks away and approached the car. The driver was shaking and sweating, although it was a fairly cool day. A warrant check revealed that the driver had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for driving with a suspended license out of San Jose. The driver was transported to Bayview where methamphetamine was found inside his socks. Thursday, August 17, 2006, Bayshore and Boutwell, 9:30 PM, Robbery (Case # ): The victim had hit a parked car near Bayshore and Boutwell. When he got out to assess the damage, the suspect came from no where, and told the victim to give up his wallet. Concerned for his safety the victim 2
3 gave up his wallet. The suspect then fled. Suspect is an African American male, years old, 5 9, 250 pounds. Thursday, August 17, 2006, 3rd and Hollister, 11:00 PM, Terrorist Threats leading to Arson (Case # ): The owners of Jimmy s Market at 3rd and Hollister found their building burning on Friday at 4:00 in the morning. The night before at approximately 11:00, two local miscreants (from a family that is well known to Bayview officers) went to Jimmy s Market and basically told the owners that they were going to burn the store down tonight (except in less genteel language). The miscreants were upset because the owners of the store had a friend of theirs arrested also for making threats. Unfortunately, they carried out their threat, fortunately the damage done could be repaired quickly. One member of the family was quickly caught, but one remains outstanding. On Monday, August 21, three members of that family returned to Jimmy s Market and said that they would burn it again. Fortunately, Officer Ernst, getting ready to go home, just happened to drive by when the three suspects were threatening the owners again. Officer Ernst gave chase on foot, but was outrun by the much younger suspect. However, Officer Finnegan who responded to Officer Ernst s request for help, arrived just in time to see the other suspects driving away. One of the suspects was then caught trying to climb into his neighbor s back yard. Friday, August 18, 2006, 1700 block of LaSalle, 11:45 PM, DUI/driving with suspended license (Case # ): Offices Haynes and Reyes observed a driver go through the stop sign at Jerrold and Phelps. They stopped the driver, who instantly told Officer Haynes, I m drunk. Take me to jail. A DMV check revealed that the driver s license had been expired for almost 4 years. A warrant check that he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for driving with a suspended license. Officers Erb and Horan then responded to the scene and took over the incident. Officer Horan administered a breathalyzer test where the driver blew a 0.19 more than two times the legal 0.08 limit. The driver was booked at Bayview on the warrant and DUI and driving without a license charge. Saturday, August 19, 2006, 3rd and Palou, 10:58 AM, Warrant arrest/driving with no license (Case # ): Officers Hopkins and Reyes while driving south on 3rd at Palou noticed that the vehicle in front of them had expired 4/06 registration. They stopped the car and found that the driver had no license, plus an outstanding warrant for hit and run. The driver was transported to Bayview where she was booked on the warrant and driving without a license. Saturday, August 19, 2006, 3rd and LaSalle, 1:50 PM, Parole Violation Warrant (Case # ): Sergeant Mike Moran stopped a car at 3rd and LaSalle for failing to stop at a stop sign at LaSalle and Newhall. A 3
4 warrant check revealed that the driver had a parole warrant out of Alameda County. The miscreant driver was advised on the stop sign, but booked on the warrant. Saturday, August 19, 2006, Cargo and Jennings, 10:00 PM, Drunk Juvenile (Case # ): Officers Anderson and Farrell arrived at The Pound at the request of the management to help removed an intoxicated juvenile. The security for the Pound had the juvenile detained just inside the front gate. Security told the officers that the Pound is open to all ages, but that alcohol is served only to those over 21. The juvenile admitted that he had three beers before arriving at the Pound. Because he was drunk when he arrived, security had thrown him out, but he climbed a fence and got back inside. Once inside, the juvenile started throwing things and causing a disturbance. The juvenile was transported to Bayview station where his mother was contacted. His mother told the officers that the juvenile was already on probation in another county for similar behavior. He was eventually cited for trespassing and released to the custody of his mother. Saturday, August 19, 2006, Vermont and Mariposa, 10:45 PM, DUI/driving with a suspended license (Case # ): Officers Ma and Cabuntala were driving north on San Bruno when they noticed that the driver in front of them seemed to be weaving inside the north bound lane. They followed the driver onto north bound 101 where the driver now weaved between the two right lanes of 101. They were able to stop the driver at the Vermont St exit and a DMV check revealed that the driver s license was suspended. He was placed under arrest and during a search incident to the arrest, Officer Ma found heroin, plus other narcotics on the driver. A similar search on the front seat passenger revealed that he also had heroin and crack cocaine, but this time in quantities and packaging for sales. Because of their suspicion that the driver was under the influence of narcotics, the officers called for a specially trained officer, Officer Erb, who is trained to test for being under the influence of narcotics. Eventually the suspect, as well as the passenger were booked at Bayview Station on DUI and narcotics charges. Phone Numbers and Web Sites S. F. P. D. Emergency: S.F.P.D. Website: S.F.P.D.
