As such, not for profit leaders must move away from traditional, outdated methods of service delivery, to creating a new organisation that is dynamic, innovative and sustainable long-term. LEADERS LEADING CHANGE. With the theme of Leaders Leading Change, this exciting one-day seminar will include an array of case studies presented by some of Australia s leading not for profit CEOs. Our diverse line-up of speakers will share their experiences, challenges, frustrations and achievements in managing change within their own organisations. Be sure to join us for the last collaborative session of the day. During this session, attendees and speakers alike will participate in a lively discussion, identifying the most important characteristics of leadership within the not for profit sector. This discussion will form the basis of a best-practice not for profit leadership model to be shared with, and applied by, not for profit organisations in Australia. The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is the largest convention and exhibition space in Australia, with a total size of over 70,000 square metres. Conveniently located on the Yarra River in South Wharf, the MCEC has hosted everything from meetings, conventions and exhibitions, to concerts, tradeshows and gala dinners. The Melbourne Exhibition Centre has a pillarless floor space of 30,000 square metres, making it the largest pillarless floor space in the southern hemisphere. This building is also known as Jeff s Shed, after a former premier of Victoria. The Convention Centre consists of a 5,541 seat Plenary Hall that can be divided into three separate theatres, 32 meeting rooms of various sizes, a grand banquet room as well as a Hilton hotel, office, residential and retail space. GETTING HERE By Tram: Tram routes 96, 109 and 12 (Stop 124A Casino/MCEC) will all take you to the Clarendon Street entrance. By Train: The closest station is Southern Cross. Once you exit the station, you can catch the 96, 109 or 12 tram routes and arrive at MCEC in just a few stops. By Bus: From Monday to Friday, bus route 237 goes via Southern Cross Station to Lorimer Street, which is roughly a five-minute walk to MCEC. By Car: If you re being dropped off at the Exhibition Centre, the Clarendon Street entrance is the closest entrance. If you need parking, the car park can be accessed via Normanby Road. 2 3
3 THE PROGRAM 12.10PM LUNCH 8.00AM WELCOME NICK KOERBIN 8.45AM: SESSION 1 NICK KOERBIN CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Association Leadership and Managing Change The First 100 Days Nick Koerbin is one of the most experienced association management professionals in Australia. Over the last 25 years he has held significant leadership roles in a variety of NFP organisations both large and small. He currently consults to the NFP sector providing advice and support to association boards and staff. In his presentation, Nick will outline how to manage change in the first 100 days of being appointed as an association President or CEO. He will share examples of best tpractice in association leadership and, in particular, cover how to manage change in the first 100 days as a new leader of an association. 9.30AM: SESSION 2 TRICIA HUGHES CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Massage & Myotherapy Australia Leadership Case Study As a CEO, the President and the PA are two key people you must understand intimately to ensure trust and understanding. If the playing field is not clear, then this opens a Pandora s box of problems. Those elected to Boards are usually active members of the association that care deeply about the profession. They may not start with text book skills or governance expertise. It is the CEO s role to ensure they teach them to make informed choices. This session brings real life scenarios, not just the periphery of being a servant of the Board AM MORNING TEA 10.30AM: SESSION 3 BRENDAN WATKINS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Achieving Association Strategic Goals through effective Leadership As the CEO of the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Victoria for over a dozen years, Brendan Watkins will present on what made the Victorian peak body more successful than other residential pool and spa association. Brendan will delve into the challenges of dealing with droughts and bans on pool filling, pool safety, consumer events, water saving programs, building regulations and federation versus single entity debates all on a shoestring budget AM: SESSION 4 ROBERT LUCAS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Restructuring the Caravan Industry Association of Victoria Case Study Robert is one of the most experienced association CEO s in Australia with over 26 years of experience working with and leading industry associations. He has been responsible for restructuring the Caravan Industry Association of Victoria into one of Victoria s most vibrant, relevant and forward-thinking industry bodies AM: SESSION 5 ANDREW HIEBL CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Repositioning Association of Australian Convention Bureaux AACB is one of the key organisations involved in promoting the value of business events to the federal government and key stakeholders. Andrew has been the CEO since 2012, and with a small but dynamic team, he has positioned AACB as one of the critical associations influencing government to invest in the events industry PM: SESSION 6 LISA SAWATZKY CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Changing an Association to meet the needs of the NDIS Lisa Sawatzky was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Alkira in March In her presentation, Lisa will discuss changing an organisation to meet the needs of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). 1.40PM: SESSION 7 ANDREW CAMERON CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Supporting Post Graduate Education - University of Melbourne Graduate Student Association The University of Melbourne Graduate Student Association is the representative body for over 35,000 students enrolled at the University. There some challenges leading an association of this nature, high turn over of members is one of them. Andrew will share with the audience some of the initiatives he has instigated while he has been CEO, as well as the lessons he has learned that can apply to all associations. 2.20PM: SESSION 8 SALLY KINCAID CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy A Case Study The Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy ( ASMIRT) is the peak body representing medical radiation practitioners in Australia. Sally Kincaid was appointed CEO in late 2016 and has been instrumental in changing the culture and focus of the association. In her presentation, Sally will share her experiences as the new CEO including the relocation of the office and realigning the organisation to focus on members. 3.00PM AFTERNOON TEA 3.20PM: SESSION 9 ANDREW GOSBELL CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER An Innovative Approach to Association Governance General Practice Registrars Australia undertook a significant constitutional reform in 2015 that enabled a unique approach to governance of the organisation. This reform resulted in the separation of the Board Chairperson and Association President roles. This was implemented through an independent director being appointed to the Chairperson role and a member director elected as the President. The dynamics of the CEO - Chairperson - President relationships, based on role delineations, clear reporting lines and effective communication has resulted in a successful tripartite model of organisational leadership. This innovate approach to association governance has brought a number of benefits and positively influenced recent repositioning of the organisation. 3.50PM PANEL & AUDIENCE DISCUSSION What is Best Practice in Association Leadership? During this session, attendees and speakers alike will participate in a lively discussion, identifying the most important characteristics of leadership within the not for profit sector. 4 THE SPEAKERS Some of Australia s leading not for profit CEOs will share an array of case studies, highlighting their experiences, challenges, frustrations and achievements in managing change within their own organisations. NICK KOERBIN FSAE Nick Koerbin is the Executive Director of Association Executive Service (AES) which is one of Australia s leading consultancies in the not for profit sector. Nick has over 20 years of hands-on experience as a CEO or senior executive managing associations. These include the Australian Human Resources Institute, Financial Planning Association, Furniture Industry Association, Materials Australia, Australian Quality Council. He is actively involved in assisting boards and staff of associations and other not for profit organisations manage change and grow their organisation. TRICIA HUGHES Tricia Hughes has been the CEO of Massage & Myotherapy Australia for the past 15 years. Over this time, she has seen the association and profession grow at an amazing rate, particularly as the public s demand and expectations for qualified massage and myotherapists has increased. Tricia s career has included the governance of not for profit associations at both the international and national levels for over 35 years. Tricia also worked in policy development when appointed to the Board of the Adult and Community Further Education Board in Victoria. She has been involved in industry competency development with the Australian National Training Authority. With qualifications in social science and community development, human resources and strategic management and investigations, Tricia also has experience in representation and unionism at RMIT and Victoria University, as well as the management of adult and community learning centers. Tricia is a member of the Australian Institute of Management, the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australian Society of Association Executives. With a focus on assisting others to achieve their goals and identify common ground, Tricia believes that professions are built and enriched by active and informed members, and that associations provide a framework for that passion. 5 ANDREW GOSBELL Andrew Gosbell is the CEO of General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA), the association representing doctors training to become general practitioners. He was recruited to this role, in early 2017, SALLY KINCAID Sally Kincaid is the Chief Executive of the Australian to lead and reposition GPRA as a dynamic national peak body. He has extensive experience in health and working with medical practitioners in the context of their professional associations, including recent experience in a range of senior roles in the medical colleges. In the context of healthcare, Andrew has broad experience in education, research, Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT). ASMIRT is the peak body representing medical radiation practitioners in Australia. Its aim is to empower medical radiation practitioners for the health of all Australians. She is also a member of the Allied Health Professions Australia Board of advocacy and corporate governance, and has worked in private, universities and not-for-profit sectors in Australia. Andrew holds a PhD, BAppSc, GAICD, FIML, with his area of research being in vision science, and a Bachelor of Applied Science. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Management and Leadership, Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors Directors. Sally has had a long and varied career in the health sector, commencing her career in factual publishing, with six years working on health, science and general documentary television production with BBC TV in London. Since then, she has held several senior management roles within the health and has governance experience, currently as Deputy Chair of EACH Social and Community Health. ROBERT LUCAS Robert Lucas is the CEO of the Caravan Trade & Industries Association of Victoria being appointed to this role in March He has had a mixed and varied working life, having started his working life as an apprentice in the building and construction industry. He has gone onto LISA SAWATZKY Lisa Sawatzky was appointed Chief CEO at Alkira in have an extensive senior executive level management career in a number of private industry sectors including construction, manufacturing, education and training as well as industry associations and business groups. He has over 26 years experience working within and leading industry associations. He has extensive experience and a proven track record in turning around poorly performing associations and growing them into sustainable, relevant organisations. She has performed a number of senior management roles at Burke and Beyond; was Regional Business known for his deep knowledge of contemporary business issues and being a straight shooter in getting things done. He is acknowledged within the caravan industry nationally for his long term strategic planning and execution, innovative ideas and restructuring the industry s association into one of Victoria s most vibrant, relevant and forward thinking industry bodies. He is a strong and passionate business advocate and has placed the caravan industry in the forefront of Manager at Australian Home Care; has taught Aged Care and Disability through TAFE. Lisa has also held the role of Director of Services and Chief Executive Officer at EDAR. Her career to date has focused on the provision of quality supports to adults Government and peoples thinking. Currently he sits on the Caravan Industry Association of Australia s National Advisory Council, the Victorian Manufacturing Skills Advisory Group and a number f not for profit boards. He has graduate and post graduate tertiary qualifications in business administration, management, human resources, and education and training. who have an intellectual disability. Lisa is passionate about the opportunities provided by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and is presently leading an organisation through this significant change. 8 9
6 BRENDAN WATKINS Brendan has over 20 years experience in the small-to-medium size enterprise, member-based organisation and association sectors. He was CEO of the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Victoria (SPASA) for 12 years, from 2006 to At both most recent permanent roles (SPASA & 3RRR- FM) he oversaw the doubling of paid memberships and gross revenue. During that time he managed significant change within SPASA and also the swimming pool and spa industry. In recognition of his efforts he was inducted into the SPASA Hall of Fame in 2018 which is the highest recognition for an individual contribution to the industry. The Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Victoria (SPASA) is the peak body of the pool and spa industry. It represents both SPASA members and the broader swimming pool and spa industry to the general public, government and relevant statutory bodies. The association strives to enhance its profile as a means of promoting the significant health and social value of pool and spa use. Brendan is a highly successful government and stakeholder influencer, media spokesperson and public presenter. He has a national profile and experience in domestic building, regulation advocacy, safety promotion, large-scale events, business and government strategy development. He is also experienced as a CEO, project leader and company secretary. ANDREW HIEBL After graduating from La Trobe University with a Bachelor of Business in Tourism and Hospitality, Andrew entered the business events arena, managing events and operations at the Albury Convention and Performing Arts Centre (now Albury Entertainment Centre). With five years of venue-based event management skills under his belt, the world of destination marketing called through convention bureaux and Andrew took on the challenge of heading up the Albury Wodonga Convention Bureau for Destination Albury Wodonga in In 2008, Andrew was lured to the calls of the Great Ocean Road where he established the Convention Bureau, Geelong, for the award-winning regional tourism organisation, Geelong Otway Tourism (now Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine). With a vision of improving Regional Victoria s reach into the business events market, he was appointed Chair of the Regional Victoria Conference Group the following year, were he led the rebrand to Victoria and the successful campaign calling on the Victorian Government to invest in the Regional Victoria Program. After securing Hall of Fame status for Geelong at the National Meetings and Events Industry Awards in 2012, Andrew reconfirmed his commitment to the industry by taking on the role of CEO for the Association of Australian Convention Bureaux where he holds a position on the Business Events Council of Australia board. Andrew also represents the business events industry on the long-standing Tourism Visa Advisory Group, convened by the Department of Home Affairs, and has most recently joined the board of Australian Regional Tourism Ltd. ANDREW CAMERON Andrew Cameron is the CEO of the University of Melbourne Graduate Student Association, the representative body for the 35,000 graduate students enrolled at the university. Andrew has 14 years of experience leading organisational change initiatives for federal government service delivery agencies, in the charitable and education sectors and for associations with expertise in improving engagement with early career membership cohorts
