2 CALI NEWS VOLUME 19 ISSUE 6 March 2019 Let s get, let s get excited! It s an exciting time of year. The second trimester is behind us and the third and final trimester of the school year has all of us leaning toward Spring (students and teachers toward Spring Break) and the great leap forward with our clocks. There is so much yet to enjoy. Cali sports teams (basketball, flag football, volleyball) are playing, practicing, or gearing up. After Spring Break there s the Book Fair. Drama students are rehearsing for their spring production on April 18 and April 19. Festival Primavera, though it s not until May, feels like it s just around the corner. Your PTA s Be Smart! fund drive is kicking off to ensure that we can maintain and perhaps even expand our enhancement curriculum of art, music, theatre, science and nature, nutrition and gardening. An after school robotics club is in the early planning stages for If you re interested in helping with that project or just learning more, reach out and let us know. Look around you in the coming weeks. We hope you ll see some of the campus beautification projects funded by the 2018 Move-a-thon coming to fruition. These are only a few of the reasons you see and hear us around campus asking for your help, whether by joining the PTA board as an officer or committee chair or just joining the association and lending a hand wherever and whenever you can. If we ve somehow missed you, and you want to get more involved, stop by room 43 and make it known. It s the path to our continuing effort to be Cali Strong. Not yet a member? It s never too late. A great way to keep up with Cali PTA happenings CURRICULUM CORNER by Jennifer Martínez, Curriculum Specialist Distinguished Visitors to CCLA Cali Calmécac Language Academy was honored to host some very distinguished visitors on February 19. Among them was Dr. Laurie Olson, the co-chair of the working group which guided the State Board of Education Policy approved on July 12, 2017, known as the CA English Learner Roadmap. Dr. Olson is the founder of the Sobrato Early Academic Language (SEAL) project, co-founder of Californians Together, co-founder of the Seal of Biliteracy, and the author of many books, articles, and videos about the education of English learners. She is considered a national expert on the education of English learners. Laurie was accompanied by other distinguished visitors who are members of SEAL s Bilingual Working Group. They selected CCLA as a model Two-Way Bilingual Immersion school and came to learn about our model and instructional strategies. ELPAC - English Language Proficiency Assessments of CA Administration of the ELPAC Summative Assessment began on February 4th and will continue through May. The ELPAC is administered to all students in kindergarten through grade 8, who are classified as English learners. The ELPAC Summative Assessment tests students on their English skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing and it helps inform teachers about the areas in which your child needs extra support in order to be successful in all subject areas. Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment (SBAC) The time for administration of the Smarter Balanced Assessment to grades 3-8 is fast approaching. Please refer to the important dates in this newsletter. The SBAC is designed to measure student growth over time and provides one measure of student knowledge of English language arts and math, critical thinking, analytical writing, and the problem solving skills necessary for success in today s world. The assessments also provide valuable information for teachers and schools to improve their teaching. It is important that all students are present during their grade level testing window! Students and parents may access practice tests for the SBAC at t Odyssey of the Mind Tournament On February 23rd, Cali had two teams compete at the annual Redwood Empire Odyssey of the Mind Tournament held at Santa Rosa High School. We had one Primary team of kindergarten through 2nd graders and one Division I team of 3rd through 5th graders. They did great! Would you like to know more about Odyssey of the Mind? 4 NOTICIAS DE CALI VOLUMEN 19 EDICIÓN 6 MARZO 2019 Vamos, vamos a emocionarnos! Es una época emocionante del año. El segundo trimestre ha quedado atrás y en el tercer y último trimestre del año escolar todos nos inclinamos hacia la primavera (estudiantes y maestros hacia las vacaciones de primavera) y el gran salto hacia adelante con nuestros relojes. Todavía hay mucho por disfrutar. Los equipos deportivos de Cali (baloncesto, fútbol de bandera, voleibol) están jugando, practicando o preparándose. Después de las vacaciones de primavera está la Feria del Libro. Los estudiantes de teatro están ensayando para su producción de primavera el 18 de abril y el 19 de abril. Parece que los Festivales de Primavera, aunque no serán hasta mayo, están a la vuelta de la esquina. Su PTA está en organizar el recaudador de fondos Sé Inteligente! para garantizar que podamos mantener e incluso ampliar nuestro plan de estudios de mejora de arte, música, teatro, ciencia y naturaleza, nutrición y jardinería. Un club de robótica después de la escuela está en las etapas iniciales de planificación para Si está interesado en ayudar con ese proyecto o simplemente aprender más, comuníquese con nosotros. Entre ellos se encontraba la Dra. Laurie Olson, copresidenta del grupo de trabajo que guió la Política de la Junta Estatal de Educación aprobada el 12 de julio de 2017, conocida como El Modelo Educativo para los Aprendices de Inglés en CA. La Dra. Olson es la fundadora del proyecto Sobrato Early Academic Language (SEAL), cofundadora de Californians Together, cofundadora del Sello de Bilfabetismo y autora de numerosos libros, artículos y videos sobre la educación de los estudiantes que son aprendices de inglés. ELPAC - Evaluaciones de Dominio del Idioma Inglés de CA La administración de Las Pruebas de Suficiencia en el Idioma del Inglés Sumativa de ELPAC comenzó el 4 de febrero y continuará hasta mayo. El ELPAC se administra a todos los estudiantes desde kindergarten hasta el grado 8, que están clasificados como aprendices de inglés. Recyclables: 16 lbs. Landfill (regular trash): 180 lbs. As you design and draw an image that could decorate the t-shirts for the fall 2019 Move-a-thon, think about Cali Calmécac s successes, past, present, and future in addressing the issues, BIG ISSUES, of waste and climate change. What has the Cali community done this school year to make a difference? What can Cali do now and tomorrow to change our impact on the world? Two grand-prize winners will be chosen for the t-shirts one for grades K-3 and one for grades 4-8.
