Principal's Highlights The Edwards staff works together with families to make high-quality student learning a priority. We are committed to using research-based instructional strategies to promote student achievement. 21st Century grant funding provided extended-day tutoring and enrichment classes (dance, computers, cooking, etc.) to students. Monthly Coffee & Conversation community meetings provided parents with curriculum information and strategies to assist students at home. Our partnership with Spread the Word Nevada provided monthly takehome books to all students in an effort to build home literacy libraries. Accelerated Reader was implemented to motivate, monitor, and recognize students' independent reading practice. All students (K-5) reading below grade level were provided extra, targeted small group instruction to develop reading skills. Sight Word Super Stars, a high frequency word recognition incentive program, was initiated to increase students' word recognition and reading levels. The CHAMPS approach was expanded to teach responsible student behavior and emphasize a more invitational and positive classroom/school climate. Edwards maintained mandatory Standard Student Attire to promote a school environment focused on learning. The Edwards Eagle Feather program promoted positive citizenship and rewarded random acts of kindness. Goal 1 Goals and Objectives Students in grades 3-5 will demonstrate academic growth to make the Adequate Yearly Progress and/or Safe Harbor in English language arts/math. Objective(s): Student performance in ELA will yield a 10% reduction of non-proficient students to reach the Safe Harbor target with specific reductions in Hispanic, LEP, IEP and FRL subgroups on the 2012 Nevada Reading CRT. Goal 2 Students in grades 3-5 will demonstrate academic growth to make the Adequate Yearly Progress and/or Safe Harbor target in ELA/Math. Objective(s): Students in grades 3-5, specific subgroups including Hispanic, LEP, IEP, and FRL, will demonstrate at least a 15 percentage point increase to meet the math target of 77.2% proficient on the 2012 Nevada CRT. Edwards Elementary School provides meaningful two-way communication with families through school newsletters, student progress reports, and phone calls. A school website is available to assist students/parents with access to school information, curriculum resources, student learning activities and ParentLink. Some classrooms utilize daily planners to assist with organization and daily parent contact. Parent-Teacher Academic Planning Time is provided to share assessment data and provide parents with ideas of how to assist children at home. Family picnics enable parents to spend social and academic time with students on campus during the school day. Monthly Story and Snack invites entire families to enjoy literature read alouds, obtain reading take-home activities, and choose a free book for all who attend. Family literacy, math and arts events provide additional opportunities for families to learn what students do in the classroom and ideas to extend learning at home. A Parent Center allows families to participate in classes relating to parenting issues and English as a second language.
