1 Weekly Newsletter February 11, 2019 Schoolwide Update LODESTAR K8 FAMILY SURVEY - DEADLINE 2/15 The primary goal of this survey is to collect and understand Lodestar family opinions, perspectives, attitudes, and perceptions in regards to Lodestar, your students, and education in general so that learning environment might be improved. The results of the family survey will help guide what the school might focus on in the next year. We want to know what YOU think! Your voice is important! INTENT TO RETURN FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR - DEADLINE 2/13/19 Please let us know whether your student(s) will be returning with us. Fill out your response by the 2/13 deadline. You can respond by filling this form online or stop by the main office and fill out the hard copy of this form. If you have any questions, or to see if we have your response on file, call the main office at VALENTINE S DAY We are excited to join together as a community on Thursday, February 14th, to celebrate our school value of Love. Our primary focus this day is to make sure every student feels appreciated and acknowledged. Students have permission to wear shirts or sweaters that display symbols of love (i.e. hearts, the word Love, rainbows, etc.) If your child wants to bring cards to exchange,please make sure they bring one for every member of their crew (please reach out to your student s crew leader for a list of names). We also ask that if families want to bring a snack in for PM crew, that they bring in a healthy snack and bring enough for all students in the crew. Please note, it is not mandatory to dress up, bring either cards or snacks. We look forward to the celebration of our core value, love, which states: "We extend ourselves so that all feel a sense of belonging and acceptance." NUTRITION FOCUS GROUP Our Nutrition Focus Group will have its first meeting on Wednesday, February 13th at 4:30pm at the Lodestar campus. During our time together, we will review the requirements for the bidding process necessary to select a food vendor for our school s meals program, look at our timeline and start putting our heads together on what we re looking for in a vendor. 2 SAVE THE DATE(S) COMMUNITY MEETING TO LEARN ABOUT THE LODESTAR HIGH SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION - 2/20/19 Join us to learn about the coming construction of the Lodestar High School and Lodestar Playground on 2/20/19 from 4:30-6:30. We want to provide updates and information, as well as hear your ideas. In addition, you should know that we will need parents to be involved if we are going to be successful moving our plans through the city! We need you to show up for the future of our K - 12 school! It is a celebration of the African American presence in America. Please join us for our Black History Month Celebration of the African American presence in America, 6-8 p.m. in the MPR. We are thrilled to have our K-4 and Middle School students bring this program to life. This will be a showcase in which our students lift their voices and gives the audience an opportunity to sing along with them. STAND FOR ALL STUDENTS RALLY MARCH 13, 2019 Lodestar and Lighthouse parents alongside other charter school communities will come together and show up to the State Capitol to demonstrate that we are a strong United Charter Community. We stand in support for ALL students. We will use our voices for policies that lift up all public schools including charter schools. 3 K-4 Update MATH NIGHT AT LODESTAR There was a great turnout Wednesday evening, 2/6, for Math Night at Lodestar; a huge thanks to the over 30 families in attendance who learned strategies to support their students at home. Every child left with a new book! EXPEDITION KICKOFFS In Quarter 3, students have kicked off new expeditions. Here is a little but of information about their new topics and some of the important, guiding questions they will be answering over their inquiry. K: Trees. What do living things need to survive? How do researchers gather information about living things? 1: Birds of the Bay. How do different birds have body parts that help them survive in different environments? Why do birds matter in the Bay Area? 2: Pollinators. How do plants depend on pollinators? How do pollinators affect our entire food system and ecosystem? 3: Water. Where does our drinking water come from? Why do different people have different access to clean water? What can we do about it? 4: Energy. How does electricity work? Where does our electricity come from? Where should our electricity come from? Update 8TH PASSAGE KICK-OFF In Q3, we have launched our 8th grade passage process. Below are some key point about passage and you can watch a sample video here: Every 8th grader will present in June Students must pass to receive their Middle School Certificate of Completion and participate in graduation/end of year activities Students will present to a panel of adults who will score your presentation using a rubric Students are not alone! They will receive support from their teachers, their passage crew, their passage team, and passage mentor Passage is a way for students to provide evidence that they are ready for high school Our Lighthouse Family of Schools defines Ready as: Academically Proficient Purposeful and Self-Aware Relationship-Builder Lifelong Learner Committed to Service and Justice

4 6TH/7TH HEALTH CREW In Q3, 6th and 7th graders will launch our health crew curriculum. Please be on the lookout for family consent forms that outlines the topics covered, including gender expectations, safety online, understanding boundaries and romantic relationship. Reach out to your crew leader for more info. Family Resource Center I AM A POWERFUL PARENT The Powerful Parent Conference is a cultural container for Parents of Color to build community, share authentic experiences in our journey of parenting, and contribute tangible tools that can support healing families and protecting our youth from social toxins by surrounding them with love. There will be interactive workshops on topics such as agency and activism; cultural tools for resilience; strategies for community and emotional safety; and healing from intergenerational trauma. There will also be powerful activities for youth participants as well as healthy farm-to-table breakfast, lunch, and snacks and so much more This is a FREE event, but registration is required.
