I can t believe we have completed a month and a half of school. As the weather gets cooler, I would like to remind you to please label your student s jackets and sweaters with their name. Our lost and found tends to build up with unclaimed items. Another common problem we have in the fall is unpredictable weather. Please have your child dress in layers so they can be warm or remove items to be cooler. October is a month full of events and activities. This week we are starting our first session of after school tutoring. Invitations have gone out and the first session will run Oct. 2 Oct. 25. The PTA Fall Fundraiser is due Oct. 5th and PTA is having a Halloween Costume Drive Oct Families can donate costumes that are too small or get a donated costume on request. Summerwind student store is next week, Oct Students will have an opportunity to spend Summerwind dollars they have earned for good behavior and other incentives. We will have parent/teacher conferences on Friday, October 12, which is a student free day. This is a great time to meet with your child s teacher and have conversations about your child s academic progress. The Great Shake Out is Oct. 18. Please discuss this day with your child as well as your emergency plan for home. We will have a Family Literacy Night on Oct. 18 from 6-7:30 pm. There will be games and activities for students as well as tips for parents to help their child with literacy at home. We will wrap up October with Boo Grams for sale, Red Ribbon Week, Fall Festival, and a food drive. As you can see, October is a busy month. Remember that we are always looking for volunteers. 2 Assistant Principal s Corner- by Lisa Aqenneni Hello Summerwind families- Here it is, Fall is at our door! I know I am ready for some cooler weather during our school days! October may bring cooler weather, but it is also brings the National Great Shake- Our Earthquake Drill on October 18, Nationally, schools, businesses, and government offices recognize this day and perform their earthquake preparation drills. Palmdale School District will hold their earthquake drills on October 18 as well. Here at Summerwind, we will hold our drill in the morning and will last about forty-five minutes. During this time, we will practice evacuation procedures, search and rescue, and reunification of students with parents. The majority of the activities will involve our school site personnel. Our students will be seated with their class and teachers. We will prepare our students for the drill during the days prior to the actual drill, please talk to your children at home that this is just a drill. In regards to other types of safety drills, we are required by California Educational Code to perform an evacuation type drill monthly such as a fire drill. Summerwind uses this SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL SAVE THE DATE! time to practice safe evacuation from our classrooms to a gathering site, assemble and then return back to our classrooms in a timely, safe manner. 4 AAPAC News You are cordially invited to the upcoming AAPAC (African American Parent AdvisorCommittee) Cookout, which is Saturday, October 6 th at 10:00 at Buena Vista Elementary School. There will be games, face painting, prizes, music, entertainment and a delicious lunch. Please see the flyer (required for entry to the event) that your child brought home or obtain one from the office. We look forward to seeing you there! The AAPAC s first Unity in the Community meeting on School Safety was held on Thursday, September 27 th at Chaparral Elementary School. We will review what was discussed at the event at our next meeting which will be held on Tuesday, October 16th from 2:15-3:15 in Room 15. At our meeting, we will discuss the PSD s upcoming Unity in the Community events, and plans for SW s Black History Month Performances that are scheduled for the evening of Thursday, February 21, We currently have 1 parent coming to our meeting and we look forward to adding more members to our group this year. We still need YOU to be a part of what is going on at SW and throughout the PSD. We look forward to seeing you on October, and remember to bring a friend or parent. As always, childcare and refreshments are provided. Kinder News Hello Family and Friends, Kindergarten has jumped off to a wonderful start! We continue to work on classroom rules and procedures, letters and sounds, counting and writing numbers, and now working on Purple Rainbow Words. Please continue to practice these skills on a daily basis as the students will be tested on them this month. Parent Conferences will be coming up shortly on October 12. This is a great time to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have with your child's teacher and to see the progress that they have made so far; Progress Reports will be sent home on that day. Literacy Night is on October 18 and the Fall Festival is on October 26. These are fun-filled nights for the whole family to enjoy together! Costume Day will be on Halloween, October 31. 5 FIRST GRADE First graders have started Benchmark Universe. Your first grader is now learning reading comprehension, spelling, writing and grammar. They are taking weekly spelling tests as well as learning and remembering their High Frequency Words (sight words). They will need you every night to review and help with all these things as the curriculum will get harder. Please work with your student as often as possible. Reading logs (Book It program with Pizza Hut) are starting as well as extra support. Accelerated Reader is offered to all students here at school as well as at home via the Palmdale School District website. Your child can also work on Footsteps2Brilliance online. Let s keep our readers...reading!!!!! Second Grade News Second graders are currently working on Unit 1 in Language Arts. The objective is for your child to understand what the government does and why it is important. Students are also reading books at their levels and taking AR tests to earn points. Please encourage your child to read as much as possible at home. Reading to your child is important too! For math we are working on place value. We will be applying this concept to addition and subtraction. Continue to help your child with basic addition and subtraction facts. On October 22 we will be going to the Lancaster Performing Arts Center to the Amazing Bubble Man. He has been entertaining audiences with art, magic, and the science of bubbles for many years. Please remind your child about good audience manners.

6 Third Grade News Alice Paul, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr, and Cesar Chavez are all citizens that made a difference. Our 3 rd graders are learning about how these important people made changes to our world. Students are learning to take notes, annotate the text, examine graphics, and write a response that relates to what they read. Students are also learning related vocabulary and spelling patterns as well as how to write in cursive. In Math Module 1, students have examined many strategies to learn multiplication like creating arrays, number bonds, and tape diagrams. Students can also use the commutative, associative and distributive properties to calculate answers to multiplication problems. Students are currently working on Module 2 which deals with telling time, measuring weight and liquid volume and rounding to the nearest ten and hundreds. Remember to assist your child with their homework and focus on the word problems. Students will be working on writing stories for an October Writing Contest. All the students have been learning about onomatopoeia words that we are encouraging them to use in their writing. Winners will be displayed in the hall towards the end of the month. We are excited to see and hear from our wonderful third grade writers! 4th grade news. Happy Fall! Lots of things are happening in 4th Grade in October. We are busy with the beginning of our Multi-Digit Multiplication and Division unit in Math. Your child should be practicing their multiplication facts daily, as well as their addition and subtraction facts. These are things they have already learned, so they should be practicing to maintain their fluency in these facts. Those students meeting 40% of their reading goal will be rewarded on 10/5 with a treat. Remember, your child should be reading at least 20 minutes every day/night. On 10/26, students reaching 60% of their reading goal will be rewarded with a treat, as well. Our Math Clinic groups will be reorganized on 10/8. Our focus will be on Subtraction/Addition processes and facts. Those who have mastered (90% and up) on the quiz, will be working on error analysis of addition/subtraction problems. Those who have mastered (80%-89%) of the quiz, will be working on multi-step addition and subtraction word problems. Students who are below mastery (79% and lower) on the quiz, will be working on understanding addition and subtraction on a place value chart. 7 5TH GRADE NEWS It is very important that your child reads for 20 minutes a day as it affects their overall academic achievement. Students who are reading at a 3rd grade IRL or lower are still learning how to read and in 5th grade it is important to read to learn. Rereading and summarizing are two very important strategies in becoming better at reading to understand. Student A reads 20 minutes per day, 3,600 minutes per school year, 1,800,000 words per year, scores in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. Student B reads 5 minutes per day, 900 minutes per school year, 282,000 words per year, scores in the 50th percentile on standardized tests. Student C reads 1 minute per day, 180 minutes per school year, 8,000 words per year, scores in the 10th percentile on standardized testing. If they start reading for 20 minutes per night in Kindergarten, by the end of 6th grade, Student A will have read for the equivalent of 60 school days, Student B will have read for 12 school days, and Student C will have read for 3 school days. Esta Intervencionista Estudiantil semana comenza la primer sessión de tutorial despues de la escuela. Invitacones han salido y la primera sesión se ejecutará el 2 de Octubre a el 25 de Octubre. La recaudación de fondos de PTA se debe el 5 de Octubre y PTA y PTA está realizando una campaña de disfraces de Halloween del 2 a 12 de Octubre. 10 Hola Familias de Summerwind- Esquina de la Subdirectora- Lisa Aqenenni Aquí está, otoño está a nuestra puerta! Sé que estoy lista para un clima más fresco durante el día escolar! Octubre puede traer un clima más fresco, pero tambíen trae el National Great Shakeoutnuestro simulacro de terremoto el 18 de Octubre, A nivel nacional, escuelas, negocios, y oficinas gubernamentales reconocen esté día y realizan sus simulacros de preparación para terremotos. El Distrito de Palmdale tambíen realizará sus simulacros de terremoto el 18 de Octubre. Aquí en Summerwind, realizaremos nuestro ejercicio por la manaña y durará unos 45 minutos. Durante esté tiempo, practicaremos procedimientos de evacuación, búsqueda y rescate, y reunificación de estudiantes con padres. La mayoría de la actividad involucrará a nuestro personal escolar. Nuestros estudiantes estarán sentados con su clase y maestro(a). Prepararemos a nuestros estudiantes para el simulacro durante los días previos al simulacro real. Por favor, hable con sus hijos(as) en casa que esto es solo un simulacro. En lo que respecta a otros tipos de ejercicios de seguridad, el Código de Educación de California nos exige que realicemos un simulacro de evacuación cada mes, como un simulacro de incendio. Summerwind usa este tiempo para practicar la evacuación segura de nuestros salones a un lugar de reunion, reunirse, y luego regresar a nuestros salones de manera oportuna y segura. 13 PRIMER GRADO Estudiantes de primer grado han comenzado Benchmark Universe. Su alumno de primer grado ahora está aprendiendo comprensión de lectura, ortografía, escritura, y gramática. Está tomando exámenes semanales de ortografía, así como aprendiendo y recordando sus palabras de uso frecuente (palabras reconocibles a primer vista). Los necesitarán todas las noches para revisar y ayudar con todas estas cosas, ya que el plan de estudios se volverá más difícil. Por favor trabaje con su estudiante tanto como sea posible. Por favor anime a su hijo(a) a leer tanto como sea posible en casa. Leerle a su hijo(a) también es importante! Para las matemáticas, estamos trabajando en valor posicional. Estaremos aplicando este concepto a la suma y resta. Continúe ayudando a su hijo(a) con datos básicos de suma y resta. El 22 de Octubre iremos al Centro de Artes Escénicas de Lancaster para ver al asombroso hombre burbuja. 14 Noticias de Tercer Grado Alice Paul, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr, y Cesar Chavez son todos ciudadanos que hicieron la diferencia. Nuestros estudiantes de tercer grado están aprendiendo acerca de cómo estas personas importantes hicieron cambios en nuestro mundo. Los estudiantes están aprendiendo a tomar notas, anotar el texto, examinar gráficos y escribir una respuesta relacionada con lo que leen. Los estudiantes también están aprendiendo vocabulario relacionado y patrones de ortografía así como también cómo escribir en cursiva. En el módulo de matemáticas 1, los estudiantes han examinado varios estrategias para aprender la multiplicación como crear arreglos, enlaces numéricos, y diagramas de cinta. Los estudiantes también pueden usar las propiedades conmutativas, asociativas, y distributivas, para calcular las respuestas a los problemas de multiplicación. Los estudiantes están trabajando actualmente en el módulo 2, que trata de decir la hora, medir el peso, el volumen de líquido y redondear a los diez y cien más cercanos. Recuerde ayudar a su hijo con su tarea y concentrarse en los problemas de palabras. Los estudiantes estarán trabajando en escribir historias para un concurso de escritura en el mes de Octubre. Todos los estudiantes han estado aprendiendo sobre las palabras onomatopeya que les estamos animando a usar en sus escritos. Se mostrarán los ganadores en la sala a finales de mes. Su hijo(a) debería estar practicando sus tablas de multiplicación diariamente, así como hechos de su adición y sustracción. Estas son cosas que ya han aprendido, entonces deberían estar practicando para mantener sus habilidades de fluidez en estos hechos. Aquellos estudiantes que cumplan al 40% de su meta de lectura serán recompensados el 5 de Octubre con un regalito. Recuerde, su hijo(a) debería estar leyendo al menos 20 minutos todos los días/noches. En el 26 de Octubre, los estudiantes que alcancen el 60% de su meta de lectura serán recompensados con un regalito también. Nuestros grupos de clínicas de matemáticas se reorganizarán el 8 de Octubre. Nuestro enfoque estará en los procesos de suma/resta y hechos. Aquello que han dominado (el 90% y hasta) el cuestionario, estarán trabajando en el análisis de errores de los problemas de suma/ resta. Aquellos que han dominado (al 80%-89%) el cuestionario, estarán trabajando en problemas de palabras de su- ma y resta de varios pasos. Estudiantes que están por debajo del dominio (al 79% o menos) el cuestionario, trabaja- rán en la comprensión de la suma y la resta en una tabla de valor posicional. 15 QUINTO GRADO Es muy importante que su hijo(a) lea por 20 minutos por dia, ya que afecta su rendimiento académico general. Estudiantes que están leyendo a un nivel de tercer grado o inferior todavía están aprendiendo a leer y en el Quinto grado es importante leer para aprender. Re-leyer y resumir son dos estrategias muy importantes para mejorar la lectura y la comprensión.
