3 -3- What is a Chartered Organization Representative? It occurred to me that in Scouting we sometimes throw around word, terms, and acronyms that we assume everyone will know. One such acronym and term that will be getting greater use in the coming months is COR or Chartered Organization Representative. If you re relatively new to Scouting, this likely means nothing to you. Even if you re a more experienced Scouter, you may have heard the term but not really understood what it means or why that person is important to your unit. In case you weren t aware, the Boy Scouts of America doesn t own your pack, troop, or crew. An organization, such as a church, a rod and gun club, a Lions Club, and so on, that wants a Scouting unit gets a charter from the BSA. That organization is the Chartered Organization and it is responsible for running the unit according to BSA standards. That includes having a Chartered Organization Representative, whose responsibilities include being the liaison between the unit and the Chartered Organization. You can learn more about the Chartered Organization in this brochure: pdf/32196.pdf. The brochure also includes a short summary of the COR s responsibilities. For more information about the Chartered Organization Representative, you can find the COR training guide at According to that document, the Chartered Organization Representative has three main areas of responsibility: 1. The COR heads the Scout unit in their organization and is responsible for its success. 2. The COR represents her or his organization as a voting member of the local BSA council. 3. The COR is a voting member of the district committee. The Chartered Organization Rep is also part of the Unit Key 3, along with the unit leader (Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, or Crew Advisor), and the unit committee chair. Last month I discussed some of the Unit Key 3 s responsibilities. Knowing that the COR has some duties to the unit makes it easier to understand why he or she should be meeting with the unit s main adult leaders on a regular basis. The Unit Key 3 should meet once a month to discuss the unit and must meet to make a detailed unit assessment with the unit commissioner s help at least twice a year or whenever there is a major change in unit leadership. You can learn more about Chartered Organizations and the Boy Scouts of America at org/about/factsheets/operating_orgs.aspx. Involving the Chartered Organized Representative and, by extension, the Chartered Organization more directly with the unit will pay dividends to both the unit and its organization. It is well worth the additional effort.

6 Why should my child go on High Adventure? -6- High Adventure Spotlight This is the second of a series of open letters to newer scouting parents about High Adventure opportunities for Boy Scouts and Venturers. Dear Parents, Last month my letter talked about what is meant by High Adventure:. High Adventure treks are trips above and beyond the typical hikes and canoe trips the youth go on with their full troop. These treks are longer, more strenuous and more challenging. And because of this they offer rewards beyond what are found on an overnight or weekend trip. This month I will write about why your child should go on a trek. These trips take significant preparation. What can you hope to get out of it? There are several answers, both short term and long term benefits: These treks can be the perfect spark to get a scout over the challenges that high school and its diversions can present. This will help keep them active in scouting. These treks will challenge them. That doesn t always happen on vacations. It is this challenge that really separates these treks from everything else. And from this the scouts will get more confidence in their ability to handle the different challenges that they will encounter in the rest of their lives. They will have pride in what they did during their trek. The work wasn t done for them, they earned their accomplishments. These are Boy Scout treks, that means they are youth led. They are organized in the Patrol Method. Because of this they give the youth a great chance to mature. They will make mistakes; maybe hike a bit before they realize they need to double check the map, maybe wait too long to start the day s paddle and now have to deal with a strong headwind, but they will learn from them. I asked my youngest son the why high adventure question. He went on a Philmont trek in 2011, and I wondered what his thoughts were now. He talked about the extended time in the back country, without cell or text coverage, while carrying his world on his back. It was a chance for him to connect with the wilderness and disconnect with everything else. He felt that this was something everyone needs these days, and every youth should experience. A particular lyric from a Tobasco Donkeys recording (The Yarn Sessions CD) of an older Philmont song (1973 Philmont movie, Artist unknown) sums it all up for me: YIS, Though I may not grow any bigger at all When I leave, I m feelin ten feet tall Gonna do a little more than I think I can Gonna come a little closer to becoming a man Jim Swain South Mountain District High Adventure Promotions

7 -7- High Adventure Base Spotlight: The Summit BSA s newest High Adventure base, the Paul R. Christen National High Adventure Base is located at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia. The Summit debuted as the site of the 2013 National Jamboree. It will soon be hosting the 2017 National Jamboree and then the 2019 World Jamboree. The Summit offers a wide variety of activities, including white water rafting, rock climbing, BMX biking, mountain biking, and zip lines. Scouts stay in the base camp and have breakfast and dinner in the dining hall. All activity equipment is provided for the participants. The Paul R. Christen High Adventure Base offers eleven programs within three program categories: The Summit Experience program provides an introduction to all components of the SBR Adventure Zone; Focused Programs allow Scouts and Venturers to focus primarily in one particular area of the SBR s adventures and concentrate on developing their skills in that focus area while still having some time for elective choices. Advanced Programs provide the opportunity to reach advanced skill levels in a single high adventure skill set.
