2 Welcome letter from Apimondia President It is indeed a great honour for me as President of Apimondia to write this welcoming letter for the 2019 Congress in Montréal. Canada - a country of diverse beauty from the Atlantic to the Pacific derives its name from the Iroquoian word Kanata, which means village. As a young student in Ireland I was always fascinated by Canada, the reason being that so many of my country men and women left Ireland to set-up a new homes there. My home county in Ireland is called Monaghan and my neighbouring county is Cavan and on my first visit to Canada some forty years ago place names and villages of these two counties in Ireland were to be seen everywhere throughout Ontario. On that first visit I met with a beekeeper in Peterborough selling his honey in the local market on a Saturday morning and when I informed him that I was a beekeeper in Ireland his eyes welled up as he was a second generation Irishman who like myself had inherited his love of our most noble of ancient crafts from his dad. We regaled about Ireland and then I began to realise the openness and friendliness of this Canadian and his welcoming of myself to his part of the world. For the Apimondia Congress in 2019 the beekeepers from the rest of the world will be made most welcome in Montréal. What a beautiful city and the Congress will be held in the very centre with easy access to just about everything. Back to my student days and the three images that stick in my memory were the hockey, the beaver and the RCMP. This may be a strange statement but hockey is like a religion there, it s the heart and soul of the people. Everywhere I travelled hockey would always come up in the conversation. My first trip was in the month of September and on my many visits into the countryside one could only be amazed by the beauty of the autumn leaves; over there they call it the fall. It was on these trips that I encountered my first beaver and to see this wonderful animal built its home with an entrance from under the water was a memory that has stayed with me until today. As for the RCMP, to be honest I didn t want to meet them in an official capacity - well who wants to be stopped by the police, but the ceremonial dress uniform which includes a tight-fitting red coat, riding pants, high black boots, and broad-brimmed felt hat, represent Canada in a most welcoming manner. The 32nd Apimondia Congress was held in Vancouver in 1999 and is still talked about today, what a wonderful event that was and I have no doubt that the Canadian people and particularly its beekeepers will provide a very warm welcome to beekeepers from all over the world in 2019 and you can all be assured of a most magnificent Congress in the beautiful city of Montréal. 3 Welcome letter from the Canadian Team Dear Apimondia community, The Canadian Honey Council and its industry partners are proud to invite you to join the 46th Apimondia Congress, which will be held in Montréal, Canada from September 8-12, Apimondia 2019 Montréal proposes a theme outlining the importance of bees for our society: Working together within agriculture, Canada s answer to sustainable beekeeping Montréal is internationally renowned for its hospitality, great attractions and centrally located modern congress facilities with easy access to the Montréal Trudeau International Airport. The Canadian Honey Council has a team that is working with the City of Montréal and the Palais des congrès de Montréal Convention Center to organize this grandiose event. The Congress will cover a broad spectrum of beekeeping and apicultural sciences, including state-of-the-art lectures, plenary sessions and various symposia within each of the Apimondia Standing Commissions. The Montréal Congress will strive to be a showcase of world-wide advancements in the science of apiculture. Emphasis will also be placed on presentations or discussions of topics that are of high prominence in the beekeeping community or that challenge our concepts of modern beekeeping, through roundtables and special interest group sessions. The poster sessions, offering lively interaction between presenters and participants, are regarded by many as the heart of the Congress. We will also endeavour to use web-based streaming of all plenary sessions to allow participation of a new category of virtual registrants in aspects of the Congress. When you visit Montréal, you step into an exquisite blend of the world s cultures. The city brings together many parts of the world and cultural communities to live together in harmony. Some 100 languages are spoken in Montréal. French is the official language, but you can be served in English wherever you go. 4 Apiculture in Canada A thriving industry! Canada has over 9,850 beekeepers, caring for a total of more than 772,000colonies. The beekeeping industry in Canada is vibrant and flourishing, with a 38% increase in colonies and 28% more beekeepers over the last five years. Most Canadian honey bee colonies are located in the Prairie provinces, where long, sunny summer days provide ample time for foraging on agricultural land; Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba collectively produce 84% of the country s honey. Honey Canadian honey is recognized globally for its high quality and safe production practices, and is enjoyed in over 25 countries around the world. In 2016, Canadian honey bee colonies yielded more than 92 million pounds of honey valued at $157.8 million CDN. Canada ranks 1 st in the world for canola / oilseed rape production Canola is a Canadian success story, and the relationship between canola growers and beekeepers is strong. Canola is grown on 20 million acres of Canadian farmland, and 75-80% of Canadian honey is from canola. Approximately 450,000 colonies of honey bees contributed to the 2016 yield of 18.4 million metric tonnes of open-pollinated canola seed, with a total economic impact of $19.3 billion CDN per year. A further 60,000 colonies are contracted annually to pollinate in the highly specialized hybrid canola seed production industry. This hybrid seed industry is dependent on bees for pollen transfer between parental lines, and provides beekeepers with over $10 million in pollination income. Canada ranks 2nd in the world for blueberry production Beekeepers supply around 15,000 colonies for the pollination of tree fruit. Prairie Provinces have four months of honey production (May-August). 6 General Info Montréal-Trudeau International Airport is located only 20 minutes away from downtown Montréal. Some 32 passenger carriers operate flights out of the recently renovated terminal at Montréal Trudeau International Airport, carrying 13.8 million passengers yearly. There are direct flights from Montréal - Trudeau to more than 130 destinations including 26 US destinations and 25 European destinations, and a new route to Beijing, China. Shuttle service to Montréal - Trudeau Airport Going to and from the airport has never been so easy! From the airport, a shuttle service, the Express bus, offers a direct link without transfers between downtown and Montréal Trudeau Airport. The Express bus route is operational seven days a week, 24 hours a day, at a cost of Can $10.00 per trip that includes a Wi-Fi connection aboard the bus. Passenger pick-up is made from eleven stops strategically located downtown and close to main hotels and tourist attractions.
