4 Shed our A Port Stephens Stop 1: aymond errace Men s Shed he aymond errace Men s Shed was founded and incorporated as a not for profit organisation in 2011 following the identification of a need within the local community for this concept. he Shed was officially opened by Councillor Glenys Francis on 4 August aymond errace Men s Shed operates from a former fire station at 51 William Street, and opens for general shed activities 4.5 days per week. Computer tutorials are conducted for members two Fridays per month. Stop 2: Salamander Bay Men s Shed he Salamander Bay Men s Shed opens five days per week from 8am to 1pm and members can attend for companionship or to undertake personal projects. Woodwork, metalwork, mechanics, electronics and crafts are offered as well as social activities and involvement in community projects. Salamander Bay Men s Shed is unique in that it sources most of its building materials from the adjoining recycling centre. Members can then sell their creations through the recycling centre on its market days. In Port Stephens everything thrown into garbage bins is given a second look by this dedicated group of volunteers working to find 'useful' junk. Shed members also refurbish computer hardware for resale, satisfying the market for affordable PCs. Members of this Shed possess a wide range of skills and member backgrounds vary - from being trades people and bank managers to farmers and teachers. Stop 3: Fighter World Fighter World is dedicated to preserving the proud history of oyal Australian Air Force fighter aircraft operations. Exhibited in two hangars, Fighter World is a totally hands on experience where visitors can walk around, touch and look into the cockpits of famous aircraft such as the Mirage III, the Avon Sabre, the Gloster Meteor, the first Vampire jet built in Australia and the mighty F-111 (newly acquired in 2013). Also on display are a ussian designed MiG-21 jet fighter, Hawker Hunter, WWII Spitfire and Messerschmitt replicas and much more 23

5 Shed our B Lake Macquarie Stop 1: Swansea Men s Shed Located in Blacksmiths, just north of the Swansea Bridge, Swansea Men s Shed opens uesday to hursday from 8.30am to 1pm. he Shed aims to create a place for men to gather, socialise, assist others and to work closely with local schools or on their own projects (such as leathercraft), in the community garden or on the many community projects. his Shed is a great supporter of Marine escue Lake Macquarie and operates coin-donation collection boats around Lake Macquarie and along the coastline. Stop 2: Windale Men s Shed he Windale Men s Shed has been in operation since 2006 and rose from the ashes of the NSW State Government Community enewal Scheme established in Initially auspiced by Catholic Care Newcastle, the project is now an independent self-managed entity, driven by community spirit and operating as a community shed. It is located in Windale, a epartment of Housing estate established in 1951 with its own postcode. Windale Shed was established as a place where young people can receive mentoring and training from skilled retired or unemployed men. A key focus is for members to assist young people to develop skills and to improve their literacy and numeracy, enabling better job opportunities. he Shed is available for those who wish to use their skills, knowledge and experience to participate in personal or community projects, become involved at a supervisory level or just experience social interaction - meeting with others and having a cuppa. he Shed operates every uesday and hursday for general activities - primarily involving metalwork, small motors and all facets of woodwork. Some members also attend on Mondays for administrative duties and Fridays for ai Chi class and other shed-related activities. he Shed is also available to benefit community members. Individuals submit for consideration their repairs or projects, to be completed by shed volunteers. Members of the community are encouraged to develop a sense of project ownership and to contribute at all levels. Stop 3: Lost in the 50s Car Museum Step back in time and experience the sights and sounds of a very special bygone era... so amazing are our 50s and 60s cars that you won't know where to look first he 50s Hall of Fame features 36 of the finest factory original, big finned American cars - acres of chrome and spectacularly colourful. Hot od Hall is home to the Batmobile, elorean, Eleanor (1967 Ford Mustang), hot rods and a host of superb muscle cars. Simply the greatest collection of 50s and 60s American automobiles on display outside the USA, this museum is not to be missed 24

6 Shed our C Lower Hunter Valley Stop 1: Maitland Men s Shed Officially opened in 2010, the Maitland Community Men's Shed operates 5 days per week and has over 100 members. It offers a wide range of activities including woodwork and metalwork, specialty crafts such as bonsai, lead lighting and clock repairs as well as a large gardening program. It is also a meeting place and facilitates a variety of organised social activites such as Friday lunches, BBQs and day trips. he Maitland Shed has a strong commitment to community projects particularly within local schools and has undertaken work on behalf of local government and elderly and disadvantaged community residents. It also hosted the very successful 2010 Hunter Men's Shed Expo. Stop 2: Cessnock Men s Shed Situated at the gateway to Hunter Valley Wine Country, the Cessnock Men s Shed & Community Garden, a pioneer Shed from 2006, exemplifies all that is typical of the Shed movement. It has four worksheds, four additional storage units and an administration block all on 1 acre, including a community garden and nursery. With 100 members participating in gardening, woodworking and metal working, shedders still have time to enjoy the BBQ area, their own pizza oven and home-grown produce. Cessnock Men s Shed serves its members' interests, supports many community activities and has an open gate policy that has welcomed many visiting sheds and people from all walks of life. Visit the Cessnock Men s Shed - come and smell the roses, relax and have a taste of the Hunter Valley. Stop 3: Hunter Valley Gardens Nestled at the foothills of the Brokenback anges in the heart of the Hunter vineyards, you will find the magnificent Hunter Valley Gardens - over 60 acres of spectacular international display gardens that will amaze you with sensational sights, colours, fragrances and adventures. With over 8 kilometres of walking paths, visitors can explore each of the ten individual feature gardens and view exquisite statuary and plantings. Hunter Valley Gardens represents a benchmark of excellence in Australian horticulture. 25
