15 Gilead 29 Lendlease Legacy in Western Sydney While Gilead may be a new community, Lendlease s history in the area started over 50 years ago. Companies must start justifying their worth to society, with greater emphasis placed on environmental and social impact. Dick Dusseldorp, Founder of Lendlease Between 1960 and 2000 Lendlease has completed 52 projects in Western Sydney. Lendlease The Dharawal People 1960s 1970s-80s 1990s 2000s Present At Gilead, the Nepean River foreshore was likely a natural campsite, a place to call home. The Dharawal people, the land s original custodians, made camps along the rivers and tributaries, caught fish and hunted game, carved the trees and stones, left behind art and spiritual markers. Just 17 years after founding Lendlease, Dick Dusseldorp formed an association with the Macarthur Development Board. Together they strived to convert the rolling pasturelands around Campbelltown into a thriving community. On Tuesday, 11 September 1979, Lendlease s Macarthur Square shopping centre opened its doors for the first time. In 1986, Lendlease s construction arm, Civil & Civic, brought to life Parramatta Stadium. The playing field was opened by Queen Elizabeth II on March 5, Lendlease s construction business, Civil & Civic built Penrith Plaza (now Penrith Westfield) in Lendlease also completed the $400 million redevelopment in The $300 million Fairfax Printing plant, located in Chullora, was capable of printing more than 80,000 copies per hour of the Australian Financial Review, Sydney Morning Herald and other newspapers. In 2004 The Macarthur Square shopping centre turned 25, introducing an exciting expansion including the region s first Gold Class Cinema and 24 lane bowling alley. Lendlease Communities launched Nelsons Ridge, Ropes Crossing, The New Rouse Hill, St Patricks Estate and completed Glen Alpine community. In 2014 UDIA Award winning Jordan Springs will be home to over 13,000 residents upon completion. Located just seven kilometres from Penrith s city centre, the community spans 900 hectares; offering a natural landscape of water, bushland and greenscapes. Gilead, Lendlease s new community launches in December 2017; one of the most spectacularly located communities in Sydney. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the country the Dharawal people and recognise their continuing connection to the land, waters and community.
