9 FALCONRY The Coniston Hotel also has one of the finest falconry centres in the north of England. Located on The Coniston Estate, a short walk from the hotel, it features an amazing array of eagles, owls, hawks and falcons - the newest arrival is Splash, a stunning white-tailed sea eagle. You can get up close and personal with the birds, learning about their amazing abilities from the friendly and knowledgeable Falconers, while you feel the exhilaration of this hands-on experience and fly these magnificent birds. 10 A PLACE TO COMPETE THE CONISTON SHOOTING GROUND AND ARCHERY The Coniston Shooting Ground is one of the best in the country, has been awarded Premier Plus Ground status from The Clay Pigeon Shooting Association, and is the UK s No.1 ground as voted by the Shooting Industry Awards The magnificent wooden Canadian lodge offers a place to warm up before and after shooting with a café serving hot drinks, fresh home-made soup, bacon rolls and more, while the centrepiece wood burner sets the scene for relaxing and socialising. If you re looking for the perfect way to help improve accuracy on the range and bring out a competitive nature, why not try your hand at archery or air rife shooting? 11 A PLACE TO RELAX THE CONISTON FISHING LAKE The centrepiece of The Coniston Estate, overlooked by the historic Coniston Hall, is our beautiful 24-acre lake. Stocked 2-3 times a year with fighting fit Rainbow Trout and also a good head of wild Brown Trout, the lake is best fished (using either wet or dry fly) from one of the estate s rowing boats, available from the boathouse. Next to the boathouse is a fishermen s lodge, the perfect location to take a break from the fishing and enjoy the wonderful surroundings and bird life. The Coniston lake and river is open to both hotel guests and non-guests and tuition is available if required. We can also arrange bike hire, or offer secure bike storage for up to 8 bikes, if you prefer to bring your own.
