2 The Congress will initiate a coordinated effort to communicate the importance of our maritime heritage and current maritime endeavours. It will bring together a diverse global array of maritime constituent groups, institutions, and stakeholders, and provide a unique opportunity for all to form new partnerships towards achieving a common objective: securing a sustainable future through better understanding of our common maritime heritage. Importantly the Congress coincides with the 200th anniversary of the founding of the modern state of Singapore, a major global center for shipping, finance and commerce. This inaugural event was initiated by Consortium for International Maritime Heritage, and is being co-organised by venue host Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). In addition the Congress is supported by a number of local and international organisations, who are dedicated creating a better understanding, appreciation and communication of the world s maritime heritage. 3 WHAT IS MARITIME HERITAGE? The world today is a legacy of our Maritime Heritage. Mastering the sea has resulted in the greatest migration of human populations in history and created a global commerce that drove the industrialisation that changed the face of cultures everywhere. Maritime heritage is the history of human involvement with the ocean and coastal lands and waters. It includes the history of ships, seafaring, marine transportation, navies, ports and communities, immigration, tourism, traditional maritime practices and trades, fishing, the marine environment, lighthouses, submerged cultural resources, museums and educational organisations, the arts, literature, law and history of human involvement with the sea. WHY A CONGRESS? Initiating a World Congress reflects the highest level of participatory involvement placed on the gathering of related interests for a common purpose. The oceans are the common heritage of all people. The myriad uses of the oceans over the centuries - for food, transportation, trade, resource exploitation, and much more-- have shaped our planet and connected civilisations. Yet our common maritime heritage forged by those uses is an underappreciated and underutilised body of knowledge that could help us to navigate our rapidly changing and dynamic world. WHY NOW? In 2015, the United Nations (UN) established the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and set an ambitious agenda for the world. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) many if not all of these goals will be delivered from the ocean. Consequently, better understanding, appreciation and communication of the world s maritime heritage lay the foundation for an effective, efficient and sustainable use of the oceans, not only for the attainment of the goals, but well beyond. As the world prepares to meet the challenges of the 2030 SDGs, we need a coordinated effort now to communicate the importance of our maritime heritage and current maritime endeavours. The 1st World Congress on Maritime Heritage provides the venue and opportunity to begin that coordinated effort. 2

4 WHO SHOULD BE AT THIS CONGRESS? The first Congress is designed to attract international leaders and participants from diverse sectors including: All elements of the Maritime Industries Sector Historians, archeologists, geographers, economists, and other scholars that study humans and the ocean and Academic Institutions Maritime museums and aquariums that interpret the human relationship to the ocean Port cities, places and communities connected to the ocean All participating organisations and individuals share an interest in conserving and finding ways to utilise the maritime heritage connected to our oceans, lakes, rivers and coastal zones in new ways to support a sustainable future. The Congress will provide a venue to exchange ideas and innovations on maritime conservation and connections to how we navigate the future and work towards achieving Goal 14 of the SDGs: Conserve and Sustainably Use the Oceans, Seas, and Marines Resources for Sustainable Development. It will foster new interactions and help new coalitions to be formed within the wider maritime community to evolve better ways to cooperate towards our shared purpose(s). BENEFITS OF ATTENDING The first World Congress on Maritime Heritage will chart new ground and create a string of tangible and intangible benefits that flow from this first ever gathering. The Congress will: Promote the interests and value of maritime industries; Enhance the attention, visitation, and interests of maritime museums, historic places, and heritage organisations; Result in new cross-sector relationships and partnerships; Serve as a vehicle for international organisations to better connect communities by demonstrating their historic maritime relationships; Illustrate how better understanding our past through the lens of Maritime Heritage will help the world better navigate the future; and Reveal heretofore-unknown connections among participants and their past. 3

5 HOW WILL IT WORK? The Congress will comprise of a three day programme which combines plenary, thematic, regional and interactive sessions. The programme consists of a wide range of international key speakers and panelists from diverse sectors. It also includes three evening functions, which will provide the ideal platform for partnership building. Exploring new Maritime Heritage connections, opportunities, and strategies within regions for helping to support a sustainable future. A combination of group discussions, presentations and closing remarks. With its strategic location along the Straits of Malacca, the maritime industry has been central to the history, rise and development of Singapore. The nation is symbolic of our Global Maritime Heritage and a befitting selection for the launch of the first World Congress on Maritime Heritage. THE BICENTENNIAL YEAR 2019 marks the bicentennial commemoration of the founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles who, together with William Farquhar and a cast of contributors from diverse communities, laid the foundation for its transformation into modern Singapore.
