1 NEWSLETTER 06 FOOD COMING INTO FOCUS The arrival of a new Federal Government heralds some interesting changes for the Australian food industry, as the Coalition works towards boosting business confidence and ensuring that Australia is open for business. A raft of taxation reforms aiming to reduce regulation and offer a reprieve from the rising costs of doing business are taking shape, as are efforts to pursue more free international trade agreements. We are also seeing a renewed focus on small business, as evidenced by Minister Bruce Bilson s address to the Australian Food and Grocery Council in October, where he reiterated the Government s desire to build our strength in food production in order to assist SMEs to benefit from development of Asian markets in particular. As key members of the food supply chain, it is important that in 2014 we harness this momentum for support of our industry. A combination of the slowdown in both mining and the impact of changes in the manufacturing of motor vehicles in our state will shine a spotlight on the food industry - could this be the beginning of our dining boom? Never before has the partnership between the SA food industry and Government been more important in order to maximise positive outcomes for the economy. Despite these incremental changes, we are still operating in a tough economic climate, working with limited channels, a stubbornly high $AUD, and national retailers who continue to strengthen. While we ve now seen the two major supermarket chains agree to a new Australian Food and Grocery Council negotiated voluntary code of conduct for dealing with suppliers, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission investigations continue. Negotiations will be as tough as ever, which is why having Food SA membership access to support and advocacy is so important. The beginning of a new year also brings an opportunity for the Food SA board to review and refine strategic planning, taking a look at exactly what we want Food SA to be, and how we can stay relevant to industry. Please feel free to contact any of our board members or the Food SA team with thoughts, feedback or ideas in this area is shaping up to be another successful year for Food SA. It is fantastic news that the SA Food Industry Awards will continue to be supported by the Government of South Australia next year. An exciting calendar of events for Food SA has been released at the back of this newsletter. The program empowered over 30 companies to make informed decisions regarding energy efficiency. Multiple companies were successful in being awarded Clean Technology Food and Foundry Grants from the Federal Government as a direct result of the assistance provided to Food SA members. The activities undertaken in the program included profiling best practice machinery, equipment, technology and standards. Rainbow Fresh has participated in the program, saying The knowledge we ve gained through our participation in Digital Tools for Foodies has proven invaluable.
