2036 WILL MARK OUR STATE S BICENTENARY By the time our State turns 200 years old, I want South Australia to be a place of prosperity. Planning and delivering on my vision for a better future starts now. This policy is just part of our plan to deliver a clear and responsible pathway to recovery and success. See where it fits in below 1.0 Growing our Economy 1.3 Investing in programs to increase export potential of businesses to drive sales and opportunities 1.6 Unlocking the resources and production of our regional areas and ensuring growth opportunities for regional businesses and industries 2.0 The Best Education System 3.0 BEING A HEALTHY STATE 4.0 Strengthening Communities 5.0 BUILDING OUR STATE 5.1 Investing in programs to increase export potential of businesses to drive sales and opportunities 5.3 Working in partnerships to grow jobs and deliver real outcomes for South Australians 6.0 Ensuring Safety and Justice 7.0 Protecting our Environment 8.0 Embracing our Unique Culture 9.0 Running an Efficient and STABLE Government 9.2 Making South Australia productive through innovation and collaboration
South Australia s economic future hinges on growing our exports, but the state s international trade has fallen behind
The Problem South Australia s exports would be worth an extra $9 billion a year had we retained our 2002 share of Australia s overseas trade. South Australia has always been outward looking. Right through our history, from our pioneering grain growers, wine makers and miners, we have retained a capacity to produce more than we need ourselves. We have never been able to grow our economy by just producing for ourselves. That s why it s of great concern that under Labor, our export performance has fallen behind the rest of Australia. When Labor came to office in 2002, South Australia was supplying 7.4% of Australia s merchandise exports. Our current share is 4%. Had South Australia retained its share, the State s merchandise exports would be worth about $9 billion a year more. That would boost Gross State Product by about 7%. Had South Australia retained our 2002 share of national exports today, we could be supporting tens of thousands of additional jobs. In recent years we ve lost ground in major markets like China, where other states have outperformed us. 9.0% MERCHANDISE EXPORTS 8.0% 7.0% Share of national total 6.0% 5.0% 4.0% 3.0% 2.0% 1.0% 0.0%
The State Liberals Plan A Marshall Liberal Government will implement a comprehensive policy to boost South Australia s international trade and support our exporters. If elected in March 2018, a Marshall Liberal Government will implement a comprehensive policy to boost South Australia s international trade and support our exporters. We will have a minister with sole responsibility for exports heading an agency with the same mission to drive a whole of government export policy. We will significantly upgrade South Australia s overseas trade representation. Currently, South Australia has its own trade representation only in London and Jinan, China. During the first term of a Liberal Government, South Australia will open new trade offices in Japan, Malaysia, Dubai and the United States. We will also increase the number of international locations at which South Australia will have representatives embedded with Austrade. Our initiatives will create a much more extensive overseas trade network for South Australia by A stronger South Australian footprint in the locations of highest potential for our exporters will give them the strongest possible support and enable deeper and long term engagement with our key trading partners. It will also provide a first point of contact for people looking for investment opportunities in South Australia. Increased overseas trade representation is just one part of a comprehensive program a Marshall Liberal Government will deliver to support an export-led transformation of our economy. Our program includes the already announced Globe Link a combination of new road, rail and airport infrastructure to provide a generational upgrade of our freight export infrastructure. Before the next election, we ll make further announcements about our approach to export growth which will include: Providing export businesses with a one-stopshop for training, mentoring and advice on boosting existing markets and securing new ones More focused outbound and inbound trade missions Increased funding and more extensive eligibility criteria for export funding support Marketing South Australia with an export, business and innovation focus Increased funding of initiatives to attract more international students to study in Adelaide A targeted policy to grow population and attract more skilled and business migrants
More exports mean more jobs and a growing economy attracting new investment a Liberal Government will give our exporters much more support because what they do benefits all of us Steven Marshall, State Liberal Leader
If you would like to provide feedback on our policy or learn more about our plan, please get in touch via: The Office of Steven Marshall MP Parliament House - North Terrace, Adelaide SA 5000 Phone: steven@stevenmarshall.com.au Web:
