10 CAMPER ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE Mst sessins pen n Sunday (3pm) and clse n Friday (3pm). If yur camper is attending a shrter sessin, please see these ties: Sunday (3pm)-Tuesday (3pm) r Wednesday (3pm)-Friday (3pm). Arrival Check In: Sundays at 3pm; Wednesday at 3pm (fr shrter sessins). We are unable t accept campers prir t these times, as the staff will be preparing the site fr campers and the gates will be lcked. It is imprtant t fllw all check-in directins and/r signs psted fr a smth check in fr yu and yur camper. Dgs shuld be left at hme when checking in/ut campers. This is fr the safety and cmfrt f ur campers and staff. Yur cperatin is greatly appreciated in keeping things mving smthly. Please make sure that yur camper has n tennis shes, with scks, befre walking int camp. Als, please make sure her day bag includes a swim suit, swim twel, water bttle, sunscreen, bug spray, bandana, and flashlight. This bag shuld be ut and nt packed away in luggage as she will need these items shrtly after check-in. CHECK-IN: Staff will direct yu t parking and check-in desk at the site. HEALTH CHECK: Each camper and her guardian will have a shrt visit with the Health Supervisr t discuss any allergies, health cncerns, and medicatin requirements that might affect the camper during their stay at camp. The camper will be checked fr head lice and have their temperature taken. If a camper is running a fever r has head lice, she will nt be allwed t stay at camp. This is fr the health f the camp cmmunity. TRADING POST: The Trading Pst will be pen n check-in day t set up accunts and t purchase items. Please bring payments t camp n check-in day, d nt send them t the cuncil ffice. Payments can be made by Credit Card, Cash, Check, Ckie Dugh, r Nutty Bucks. Check Out:BRING IDENTIFICATION TO PRESENT AT CHECK OUT. PHOTO ID AND SIGNATURE ARE REQUIRED TO RELEASE CAMPERS. Gate pens prmptly at check-ut time (3pm). Yu may take this time t meet with yur camper s cunselrs. They ll be happy t meet yu and speak with yu abut yur child. EARLY PICK-UP if yu need t pick up yur camper early, please advise the Camp Directr at check-in and indicate the time and date. LATE PICK-UP is nt an ptin. She will be excited t see yu and share her camp experience. This is als the beginning f the staff meeting and preparatin fr the next week. MEDICATIONS/LOST & FOUND please pick medicatin up frm the designated staff member. Please check the lst and fund prir t leaving camp as it will be dispsed f the fllwing week f yur camper s sessin. All staff cmpletes a lengthy applicatin prcess which includes a written applicatin, emplyment histry, tw reference checks, verificatin f skills and certificatins, a persnal interview, and a backgrund check. We chse cunselrs with an hnest and deep desire t wrk with children in an utdr setting. Camp cunselrs participate in an extensive staff rientatin prgram t prepare them fr wrking with ur campers. Tpics cvered include: camper behavir/psitive behavir supprt, supprt and discipline, utdr activities, rle f the cunselr, grup dynamics, emergency prcedures, first aid and CPR training, hmesickness, and much mre! MEALS AT SUMMER CAMP Our meals at camp are prepared by an experienced cking staff. We serve kid-friendly, healthy meals. Water is available at all times. Campers will als have the pprtunity t ck ne f their wn meals ver a campfire. Fr dietary needs, please cntact the Camp Directr at least tw weeks prir t yur child s sessin and remember t indicate dietary needs n yur child s health frm. WATER BOTTLES, SUNSCREEN, & INSECT REPELLANT It is very imprtant fr yur child t bring all f these items t camp. Keeping hydrated is vital t beating the heat. Campers are expected t carry their water bttles with them at all times. We want t remind camper families f the imprtance f prtectin frm the sun. Please send sunscreen with yur child, as they are utdrs a great deal f the time. Waterprf, sweat prf, r sprt type sunscreens in ltin frm are recmmended. We encurage yu t purchase an insect repellent which has been specifically made fr deep wds. Please make sure yur camper knws hw t use these items as cunselrs may help with the applicatin; hwever, the camper is ultimately respnsible fr applying. We d nt recmmend bug bracelets r aersl sprays. SHOWERS AT CAMP We d have ht & cld shwers available at camp. In cnsideratin f ne f the tenets f the Girl Scut Law using ur resurces wisely, shwer time will be limited. Girls are asked t keep their shwer time t a minimum. Prepare yur camper by having her practice taking 5-minute shwers befre camp. Campers are expected t shwer each night. 7

12 TRADING POST Camp Marydale and Camp Whispering Pines have a trading pst. The items available may include water bttles, pillw pets, patches, stamps, statinery, and a wide selectin f suvenirs. Suvenirs may nt be the same amng bth camps. An accunt will be set up by the parent/guardian at check-in. N purchases may be made with cash during the week. Campers shuld nt bring cash t camp! Yu shuld carefully cnsider the amunt yu place in yur camper s trading pst. Mney can be added t the accunt with Credit Cards, Cash, Check, Ckie Dugh, r Nutty Bucks. Campers must spend the entire amunt in their Trading Pst accunt at camp. HOMESICKNESS There are many things parent/guardians can d t ffer strng supprt t children and help minimize hmesickness befre campers depart n their exciting camp experience away frm hme. Here are sme helpful suggestins: Emphasize that yur camper is ging t camp rather than yu are sending them. Please avid statements like, I m ging t miss yu terribly. Camp is a terrific experience; be careful nt t make yur camper feel badly abut ging away and having fun withut yu. While painting a bright picture f camp, d nt frget t mentin sme f the nt s glamrus realities f utdr living there shuld be n surprises when a child discvers a spider as a cabin mate and that the trip t the bathrm can be a little walk. Strngly avid such statements as, If yu dn t like camp, yu can just cme hme, Children wh are experiencing difficulties adjusting t camp will cmpund the prblem by nt giving it a fair chance. Often they will clse their minds t adapting and fcus immediately upn ging hme! Encurage yur camper t talk t her cunselr if she is feeling hmesick. Mst children settle int camp s rutine and adjust quickly; hwever, temprary hmesickness is nrmal. Sme children may experience it fr a day r s at camp. If by chance, yu receive a letter frm yur camper expressing her hmesickness, try nt t panic. Chances are several days have passed since she wrte and has since adjusted. The staff is trained in techniques t handle hmesickness and extreme cases will be handled by the Camp Directr. Remember that mst hmesickness is reslved fairly easily. If yur camper seems t be unable t adjust t camp, the Camp Directr will wrk with yu t determine a plan f actin fr yur camper. We all want what is in the best interest f yur camper. Certainly, if it is nt in her best interest t try t stay, we will tell yu. Hwever, if yur child has decided t stay, cming t get her may make her feel like she failed. The Camp Directr will nt cntact yu until all pssible steps have been taken t reslve the issue. Smetimes, this can take several days t cme t a cnclusin. CAMPSICK PARENTS Take a deep breath. Remember that yu have selected a quality camp with a well-trained, caring staff and a great prgram, and that yu have sent yur child t vernight camp t becme independent and t gain persnal self-cnfidence. We recgnize this may be a new experience fr Mm & Dad, t. Let yur camper knw hw prud yu are f them fr chsing such an adventure. Encurage her t try new things, meet new girls and relax n her camping trip. TELEPHONES Campers are nt allwed t receive r make phne calls while at camp. The Camp Directr will relay any emergency calls. Part f the philsphy in sending a child t vernight camp is fr them t grw and develp independently. This grwth includes learning hw t adapt t new peple and situatins, prblem slving, learning t cmmunicate, and wrking as a team with their bunkmates and cunselrs in rder t gain the self-cnfidence that cmes with being able t handle things n their wn. Camp is a chance fr yur girl t unplug and get in tuch with nature! Yu and yur camper have signed the Camper & Guardian Agreement stating that cell phnes are nt allwed at camp. There is n way fr the camp t mnitr wh yur child is having cntact with, fr hw lng, r hw ften when they have access t a cell phne. They als tend t be a distractin, taking the camper s attentin away frm their activities in camp. Camp is a pr envirnment fr cell phnes. It is full f dirt, water, and utdr elements that are unkind t phnes. All cell phnes will be cnfiscated and returned at the end f the sessin. Girl Scuts Luisiana East, Inc. is nt respnsible fr theft, lss, damages, r charges t a cell phne brught t camp, regardless f circumstances. HEALTH PROCEDURES PREPARE YOUR CAMPER Parents are encuraged t talk with their children abut what t d if they have a prblem while at camp. In rder t be sensitive t the privacy f ur campers, camp staff is nt permitted t bserve campers while they are bathing r changing. Because f this practice, staff may nt knw if a child is experiencing a health prblem, such as a rash n a private bdy area, unless the camper tells them. Or, campers may be embarrassed and hide that they are having a prblem, such as cnstipatin. Remind yur camper that her cunselrs and the camp nurse are there t take care f her. Please send persnal hygiene prducts and shw her hw t use them. Keep in mind that it is nt uncmmn fr yur camper t start her menstrual cycle at camp please prvide her infrmatin that culd assist her while she s away. CAMP PHYSICAL Every camper is required t have had a physical exam that is signed by a licensed physician/nurse practitiner and signed by a parent/guardian within 12 mnths prir t her arrival at camp. A recrd f immunizatins and a current tetanus vaccinatin are required. Writing current in the immunizatins sectin is nt acceptable please list year at minimum (r attach sht recrd). HEAD LICE If head lice are fund during the health screening yur camper will nt be allwed t stay at camp. Since head lice are highly cntagius, this is fr the health and safety f all campers and staff. HEALTH SERVICES WHILE YOUR CHILD IS AT CAMP Camp maintains an infirmary that is staffed by qualified health care prviders. The facility is lcated within easy prximity t all areas f camp. The camp s health care services perate under the guidance f lcal physicians, wh are als n call fr cnsultatin and emergencies. Emergency rescue squads are in quick prximity shuld there be a serius emergency. The health care staff will be available n Check-In upn yur arrival t camp if yu wish t discuss any special needs f yur camper. WHEN ARE PARENTS CONTACTED? In the event f a medical emergency, parents will be cntacted as sn as pssible after emergency care, when needed, is secured. Camp staff will infrm parents if a child sleeps vernight in the infirmary r if she is taken t a hspital. Parents will als be cntacted in the event f any illness that requires the care f the camp health staff fr treatment ther than what is cnsidered rutine care (insect bites, cuts/scratches, headaches, sunburn, etc). CAMPER MEDICATIONS ALL medicatins will be cllected n pening day by the camp health staff. This includes ver the cunter medicatins. Please d nt pack medicatins in yur camper s luggage!!all medicatin must be in the riginal cntainer r blister pack, labeled by the pharmacy, with the child s name, with the dsage, time, and quantity t be given. Hwever, ur camps d nt prvide prgrams that are rehabilitative r therapeutic in nature, and d nt specialize in serving children with special needs, including children with severe emtinal, scial, r behavir difficulties. We hpe that, as a parent, yu have already frmed a partnership with us and have made us aware f any special needs yur child may have, prir t check-in. This includes, but is nt limited t, infrming the camp f any severe allergies, asthma, disabilities, r emtinal/behaviral/scial/psychlgical needs. MEDICATION VACATION It is imprtant t be aware that the demands n a child s attentin, scial skills, and the need fr self-cntrl actually increase in a camp setting, ften in many ways that are mre demanding than in a schl setting. Campers need t pay attentin, fllw instructins, be respnsible fr their wn belngings, act apprpriate in the scial climate, and participate in daily living skills and in prgram activities, bth day and night. We highly recmmend that parents wrk with their child s medical/psychlgical prfessinal t determine the best curse f actin when cnsidering if yur child will be taking medicatin during camp. When pssible, it is best t have a child cntinue her medicatins while at camp. If yu elect t cntinue medicatin while yur child is at camp, please be aware that many medicatins are water sluble, and are excreted ut f the bdy by sweating. At camp, yur child 11

CAMPERS WITH ASTHMA Asthma can be a special challenge at camp. Between activity, heat, humidity, and the mld, pllen, and ther envirnmental factrs, just abut every asthma trigger that there is exists in an utdr camp envirnment. Campers with asthma, r a histry f, shuld cme t camp with apprpriate medicatins/equipment (inhalers, peak flw meter, nebulizer/accessries). Please label all equipment with camper s name. Campers, r their cunselrs, are permitted t carry inhalers while at camp please bring an extra shuld yur child lse ne. Please bring a written asthma management plan, which is t be turned int the camp health staff at check-in. Infrmatin shuld include a list f yur child s asthma triggers, frequency and severity f attacks, typical treatment, medicatins, emergency care, inhaler use, nebulizer use, and peak flw meter znes. CAMPERS WITH ALLERGIES Be sure t infrm the camp, in writing, f any allergies. We cannt help guard against a ptential reactin if we are nt advised f an allergy. The camp MUST be aware f any allergic reactins that include/have a histry f: swelling, difficulty breathing, fainting, seizures, r anaphylaxis. These types f allergies may include, but are nt limited t: insect stings, plants, fds, ils, spices, fd additives/derivatives, latex, medicatins, etc. Please send all required prescriptins with yur child t camp. If yur child has a prescriptin fr epinephrine, please make sure t send this with yur child and that yur child has been instructed in its use. Whenever pssible, we encurage parents t wrk with their child s dctr t prescribe an autmatic injectr system, such as an epi-pen, as these types f injectrs are easier fr the camper, and ur staff, t administer/assist with. CAMPERS WITH DIETARY RESTRICTIONS Be sure t infrm the camp directr in writing at least three weeks prir t yur camping sessin f any dietary restrictins including but nt limited t: allergies, sensitivities t certain fds, specialty diets (vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, gluten intlerance, lactse intlerance, etc.) This des nt include fds that yur child dislikes. 19 DISCIPLINE POLICY Discipline at camp is a prgressive plicy. Cunselrs are trained n discipline expectatins and slutins during staff training. Camper behavir will travel thrugh their cunselrs and unit leaders first, the Assistant Camp Directr secnd, and the Camp Directr last. If the behavir cannt be crrected, the parents will be ntified. If the camper is in danger f being sent hme, the parent will be ntified first thing. Behavirs that are ZERO TOLERANCE and require immediate dismissal f the camper are nt limited t: bullying (physical r emtinal) and pssessin r use f drugs, alchl, r weapns. If yur camper engages in any f the afrementined behavirs r actins, yu will be required t pick the child up immediately, regardless f the time, as we d nt have a separate facility r the staff t sit with yur child independently vernight. PROGRAM MODIFICATIONS & CHANGES Althugh rare, the Girl Scut Cuncil, fr a variety f reasns, must ccasinally cancel a camp sessin. If this ccurs, yu can expect the entire camp fee t be refunded. Other times, certain activities described in the camp brchure must be suspended r changed due t circumstances beynd ur cntrl, such as inclement weather r safety cnsideratins. In these situatins we try t adapt by ffering an equally valuable alternative prgram. Under circumstances f this type, refunds shuld nt be expected. REFUND FOR CANCELLATIONS If yu need t cancel yur camper s sessin, a partial refund may be given in sme instances. These are cnsidered n a case-by-case basis. All requests fr refunds must be submitted, in writing, three weeks prir t yur camper s sessin start date. NOTE: Membership fees are nnrefundable and a $50 cancellatin fee applies.
