Hopfully th targt will b th safst plac to avoid a dirct hit, but you nvr know. Th AGM was hld last wk with quit a fw mmbrs showing intrst by attnding. Stuart Rushton Congratulations to Glnn Alford who nominatd and was succssful in th Board lction. Paul Canavan and Richard Sibly wr r-lctd, as was Shaun Own, who was co-optd during th yar and had to stand for r-lction as rquird undr our constitution. So thr I was on Sunday, having a coff with Doug and a frind of his, also an aviator, chatting about flying in gnral and prsonal xprincs in aviation whn Doug mntiond somthing about a hostag drama at thir fild arlir this yar. A what?... I askd! Apparntly somon phond th fild asking if ful was availabl and upon rciving an affirmativ thy promptly landd within th hour to rful. During th rfulling procss a call from th boys in uniform was takn by th duty prson who was askd if such and such an aroplan had mayb droppd in at som stag. Wll, ys, as a mattr of fact it s hr now, was th rply. Uniform boys askd if th rfulling can b slowd down to allow tim for thm to arriv, which thy did vry promptly. Long story short, this turns out to b a hostag drama, th occupants of th twin ngin aircraft wr in possssion of a chimp, ys, a monky. Th chimp had bn takn (stoln?) from a zoo somwhr in Australia. Th drama concludd pacfully and I undrstand th chimp was rscud and takn back to whr h cam from, a zoo I would guss. Don t know what th outcom was for th two popl in th twin ngin aroplan but what a story! Anyway, I was so scptical I said I d print th story in Plan Talk, thinking thy d say, Nuh, w r just joking, but no, thy said ys go ahad, it s tru. Sing Australia from th Air I hav dcidd to rtir from flying for a coupl of rasons:- On is du to having lost my nthusiasm for flying, which I bliv startd on my last flight to South Australia arlir last yar. Th scond rason is I am 72 yars old and I think I should. I hav clockd up 1,100 hours plus about 300 as air judg / safty pilot. I hav a twin ndorsmnt on Partnnavia s and clockd up just ovr 200 Hours. All my twin flying was don up North, Northrn Trritory, W.A. and Qunsland. I will start from th bginning, 29 yars ago. I wantd to s Australia. In 1982, Civil Flying Srvics wr offring Larn to fly in 21 days, so I thought I could do this during January 1983 holidays. Wll it took m 6 wks to gt my rstrictd Licns bcaus my mdical took that long to obtain. My problm was I had asthma as a youngstr and th Civil Aviation Authority took ags to giv m my mdical claranc. Wll, that s how it all startd and I was thrilld to do my first solo and thn obtain a Rstrictd Licns in Fbruary Aftr that I took it asy and took a furthr 6 months to gt my Unrstrictd Licns. Aftr I got my Rstrictd Licns my frind Paul Bnntt, a RVAC mmbr introducd m to th club and got m into Black Flight, and ndlss to say I am still a Mmbr today. My ambition was to s Australia from th air which I hav don, but on cannot fly around Australia all th tim, so flying comptitions vry month (9 months of th yar) can kp you currnt. I hav don this with a coupl of yars omittd. I am also proud to say I was club champion twic, Black Flight champion (Ian Molony Trophy) 4 tims and in th top 10 pilots about 12 tims. My first flight out of Victoria was to Brokn Hill for 4 days and back through Rnmark, (S.A.) and Mildura. I took this flight with my wif Suzi in a Warrior (Civil Flying Srvics) flying dirct MB to BHI, which took 4 hours. By th tim I got to BHI, I was litrally busting for a lak, I could barly walk. Sinc thn I hav bn about a dozn tims to BHI as a first stop and on to placs lik Coobr Pdy, Alic Springs, Ayrs Rock, Kings Canyon and byond that, all th way as far as Tnnant Crk, Kathrin, Jabaru, Arnhm Land, Darwin, Broom, or around to th Gulf of Carpntaria, Mornington Island, Cairns, Townsvill and back down to Mlbourn. Th abov placs I hav mntiond ar only 5% of whr I hav flown. From 1983 until about 2002 I always flw as a solo pilot, gnrally with mats and oftn with Suzi, Stlla and Bob (my cousins) to all cornrs of Australia. It has bn fantastic, grat advnturs, bautiful scnry. Also th bauty of flying is sing Australia from th air. You can covr larg aras in lt s say, 2 wks as against 2 3 months by car. Som of th bautiful scnry I hav sn in approaching various airports was into Cairns, Darwin, Cooma & surrounding mountains, Ayrs Rock, and th Gulf of Carpntaria. In th last 8 10 yars Suzi and I togthr with Krin & Kayoko Grnwood in WHG (Pipr Lanc) and Bob & Jacki Haytr, Andrw & Vicky Stopp in a Cssna 182 hav bn to so many placs and had grat advnturs. W all got on so wll on vry trip that w still mix socially and hav found a clos bond-ship that is vry spcial. Wll I could go on about so may othr placs I flw to, but I don t want to bor you. Birdsvill racs I visitd about 8 tims and campd on th ground. It is worth th visit, but slping on th ground is not so good. I hav to thank vryon who flw with m and had faith in m. Also, I thank my wif Suzi who accompanid m on many trips and on trip in particular in a Cssna 182T (Gnral Flying Srvics) up to Lindman Island. In poor wathr w oftn har pilots ask th towr, Do I nd a spcial VFR claranc? Spcial VFR has rducd paramtrs that must b judgd from th cockpit. Can I rmain clar of cloud? Do I hav th rquird visibility? Th Towr is abl to accommodat Spcial VFR and assist you with your assssmnt of th wathr but ultimatly th Pilot in Command must dcid if th wathr is suitabl for Spcial VFR. Chck your AIP and undrstand Spcial VFR rquirmnts. Whn procssing Spcial VFR th towr has incrasd sparation rquirmnts and may dlay a Spcial VFR flight to accommodat an IFR movmnt. Th Command Instrumnt Rating is on of th most challnging and rwarding qualifications in Aviation. This qualification nabls you to fly in and out of cloud and abov th wathr safly and comfortably. Sounds simpl but it s tru. Th Instrumnt rating maks you a bttr VFR Jo Frlazzo pilot as far as your rspct of th wathr is concrnd and how flying in controlld airspac givs you a bttr option for transiting from on city to anothr. Ths days thr is a littl mor flxibility in th typ of IFR rating that can b gaind to nhanc your flying qualifications spcially for th privat pilot who has no dsir to work commrcially in aviation. This rating is known as th Privat IFR rating and surprisingly thr still sms to b confusion as to what this rating ntails. Simply put, th Privat IFR or PIFR can b usd for privat oprations, whras a Command IFR rating can b usd for Commrcial oprations providd that you hold a Commrcial Pilot Licnc and work undr an Air Oprators Crtificat. Towards th nd of a grat family holiday, my wif Lucinda suggstd that mayb w should look at transfrring from Castaway Island in Fiji back to Nadi Intrnational for our rturn flight hom via saplan. I d bn on th bach throughout our tim on th island whn othrs wr arriving and dparting by Hlicoptr and D Havilland Bavr, a magnificnt looking Old Timr with an vn bttr sound of th radial ngin. Bliv it or not, I agrd to this suggstion and w wr bookd within minuts. It was rally a No Brainr whn w calculatd th travl tim of 2 hours via Launch or 15 mins by saplan with Charactr and a grat sound. Th conditions wr grat, with an astrly blowing along th bach that w had bcom quit accustomd to. Th kids Will, Hnry & Jss spottd th inbound Aroplan and within a minut th pilot was watr taxiing towards us, shut down and jumpd out waring th mandatory Hawaian shirt and Aviator sunnis. Jump in, h said, and without any surpris to anyon in my family, I ndd up in th Right Hand Sat. Th smll of this Aroplan was somthing on its own, an aroma of lathr, oil, ful and th sa - it was magnificnt. Th pilot was on of th fw Fijian pilots as most travl from Canada with lak tim. Th pilot was kn to lt m know that lak flying is vry diffrnt to th sa and that h had grown up hr. W wr strappd in and rady. W wr offrd what I initially thought wr hadsts but no, thy wr ar muffs. I dclind th ar muffs with th intntion of listning to th music of th radial. In no tim, th prop turnd and w wr on th mov chcking for snorkls in th watr and any inbound vssls. Pr takoff chcks, GPS track in, w kpt taxiing out with watr lapping at th hug floats undrnath. Finally w turn back towards th island and that sound of th radial is upon us. Edwards took Douglas DC-8-43 no. N9604Z for a tst flight at Edwards Air Forc Bas in California. W took it up to 10 mils up, 52,000 ft that s a rcord and put it in a half-a-g pushovr. Bill maintaind about 50 pounds of push. H didn t trim it for th div so that it would want to pull out by itslf. In th div, at about 45,000 ft, it wnt to Mach 1.01 for mayb 16 sconds, thn h rcovrd. But th rcovry was a littl scary. Whn h pulld back, th lvator was inffctiv; it didn t do anything, so h said, Wll, I ll us th stabilizr and th stabilizr wouldn t run. It stalld, bcaus of th load. What h did, bcaus h was smart, is somthing that no othr pilot would do: H pushd ovr into th div mor, which rlivd th load on th stabilizr. H was abl to run th (stabilizr) motor, with th rlivd load, and h rcovrd at about 35,000 ft. That s an unofficial suprsonic rcord, payload rcord, and of cours an altitud rcord for a commrcial transport. I think it took about 10 yars for th SSTs to bat that. W only had ful for a half-hour flight onc w got thr, bcaus w wantd to b light, to climb. BW: Amazing th numbr of tims popl with tugs moving airplans hav managd to do that. RHE: I did it myslf, calibrating th flaps. W d go down in twodgr incrmnts and hand-mark th dials in th cockpit so th pilot would know whr th flaps (sttings) ar. Th crw chif told m to put th flaps down. Nobody saw th crw (work) stand out thr, and w dingd (a flap) Fortunatly, th crw chif was a nic guy and took th blam: H said h should hav lookd. BW: What did (going suprsonic) fl lik? RHE: Wll, rally, th snsation was not thr at Mach At.96 Mach it bufftd for a whil.. BW: So thr was a littl bit of a wall. RHE: Yah, and a littl abov.96 it wnt away, and it cam back as w slowd down to.96. Th thing that imprssd m th most was th dark, black sky. I d nvr sn anything lik that. I m sur our military pilots ar familiar with it. I had mountd som camras in th middl of th airplan, shooting out ach window. I wantd to catch th (F-100 and F-104) chas airplans out thr, but I nvr saw th chas airplans in th picturs. But it did show th ailrons flapping up as th shock wav lft I think it was about.97 Mach. W d normally ovrshoot a littl so w d b sur w would gt it, so w got up to.97 quit a fw tims. And Bill said, Wll, if w can gt up to.97 w can gt up to That s not so far away.
