Unfortunatly, this yar I was unabl to participat with our yacht, Wild Oats XI, but for good rason. Sh was away on th othr sid of th Pacific Ocan, compting in on of Amrica s major ocan racing vnts, th Transpac Rac from Los Angls to Hawaii. It was crtainly a worthwhil ndavour as Wild Oats XI s nam wnt into th rcord books, having scord th fastst tim for th cours. Ironically, this rcord gos hand-in-hand with th rcords w ar stablishing with Hamilton Island rcord occupancy lvls and unprcdntd accolads from our gusts who hav njoyd th Hamilton Island xprinc. On th not of succss, in 2016 w will b clbrating th 10th annivrsary of our worldclass luxury rsort, qualia, which is locatd on th scludd, northrn-most tip of Hamilton Island and is vry clos to my family s hart. Dsign calculations and computr analysis confirmd th mid-sction of th yacht could b rtaind, and that th fastst possibl shap would s hr forward sctions mad fullr (and thus mor buoyant) and xtndd by two mtrs. Howvr, with th Hobart rac having a maximum ovrall lngth limit for yachts of 30 mtrs, two mtrs would also hav to b cut from th strn so sh stayd within that limit. But I lov th ida of a spring rac: you work your butt off for an hour or hour and a half, thn you rlax with som guilt-fr brs. And I couldn t think of anywhr bttr to hav thm. I also knw that taking on th island with all th hills it s got going on, and th wathr would b rally tough. So whn I thought I d try triathlons, I thought prfct First I [wnt] on a training trip to Orlando, Florida and Nw York in prparation for th summr of triathlons that I am doing this yar. So I v not just bn training to gt through this on vnt; I m conditioning myslf for a sris. Hamilton Island is th start. I might hav don a marathon, but nvr a sprint [vnt] lik this. You could say that a triathlon is shortr distancs of vrything, so a marathon has got to b hardr, but you hav to chang your body to do things with xplosiv powr and forc, rathr than at a prtty consistnt pac for four hours. It s quit drastic. Florida was all about prparing for th tropical hat, th humidity of Hamilton Island and th ocan swimming. But Nw York was mor about rconncting with th popl I mt through running th Nw York marathon last yar for th brain cancr charity B*Curd. I rvisitd th finish lin of th marathon and filmd my flings about [going back to] th spot whr I crossd th lin aftr having surgry on my own brain cancr months bfor. I was 28, it was lat Fbruary 2014, whn I was diagnosd. I was doing sports journalism for Yahoo!7 and I d startd to find that whn a story brok in th nwsroom and I d nd to punch out a fw paragraphs quickly, I couldn t work out whr words wnt in a sntnc or rmmbr th word I was looking for. In convrsation I couldn t think on my ft. At first my GP thought that I might hav som anxity and nd to a s a psychologist but thought I should hav th MRI [scan] just to b sur thy pickd up th tumour straight away. I was in surgry within about 10 days. Bfor that thr was a whol bunch of tsts to dtrmin which sid of my brain all my thinking and control and spch wr on, about fiv mor MRIs and othr tsts. It was all so swift that th motional procssing about actually having brain cancr didn t rally hit until I d got through th surgry and I ralisd what I d bn through, and what that mant for going forward. I just wnt into surgry thinking I v got to gt back to my job, I v got to gt back to my usual lif. I vry vividly rmmbr waking up with mor I VERY VIVIDLY REMEMBER WAKING UP WITH MORE DRIVE AND AMBITION THAN I D EVER FELT IN MY LIFE. I HAD A SENSE OF DEFIANCE... I KNEW I HAD TO DO SOMETHING POSITIVE. driv and ambition than I v vr flt in my lif. I had a sns of dfianc: I wasn t going to just li thr and lt bad things happn; and I knw I had to do somthing positiv quickly, bfor ngativ thoughts startd crping in. That s what ld m to sign up for th Nw York marathon that Novmbr. Thr wr a lot of tims whn I had doubts about whthr I could pull it off. I was in prtty good physical shap bfor my diagnosis and I think that mad a hug diffrnc to my trajctory, but somtims my nurosurgon or nurologist would say, Look, you r at risk of having sizurs if you push too far hr. Th first physical challng was just walking. I could walk, but had such poor balanc and stability. And I couldn t vn hav lunch with a frind without nding to slp for four hours aftrward. I had to wait four wks until I could go to th gym, and vn thn I was only allowd to walk thr tims a wk. I startd by holding onto th tradmill and going slowly. Two months post-op I could spd it up into a slow jog. From that point, a marathon might sm a million mils away, but I know that on foot in front of th othr gts you thr. No trading watr. I [ndd up] doing my first run [on th road] only 100 days bfor th actual marathon. It was a bit of a stp challng! Running that marathon in Novmbr, whn I hit th wall at about 35 kilomtrs in, just looking down at my jrsy that said cur for brain cancr with my nam on th front motivatd m.
