With a makovr of marvlous proportions on thir Colossus woodn coastr (s story, pag 22), th ntir ara rcivd a frsh faclift. Stampunk décor has bcom somwhat of a popular styl in rcnt yars. With Magic Mountain s floorlss B&M coastr, Scram, sitting adjacnt to th nw Twistd Colossus, th ntir ara has rcivd a rtro stampunk thm, clvrly titld th ScramPunk District. Thmatic touchs ar vrywhr. An old tractor now looks lik somthing straight out of Juls Vrn. Pips and whls and gadgts of all kinds hav givn a longnglctd part of th park a whol nw flavor. Six Flags Magic Mountain is quick to giv crdit to Maintnanc Dirctor Tim Dofflow for his savvy handiwork. Th takaway from this is a brilliant us of rsourcs. Virtually vry park has a bon yard. Schilk along with Rocky Mountain Construction foundr Frd Grubb wnt on to dsign Iron Hors /I-Box track, an all-stl track rplacmnt systm for woodn rollr coastrs. Nw Txas Giant at Six Flags Ovr Txas (Arlington, Txas) was th first installation of this track tchnology in Schilk was askd about what h was trying to accomplish with th Wickd Cyclon projct. Typically on a rbuild, Alan and I and our group will go down to rid and study th prvious coastr, and thn figur out what w can and can t do with th xisting footprint, said Grubb, adding that Twistd Colossus was th most complx of his company s woodn coastr projcts du to its two-track dsign. Th problms with Colossus, h notd, ar common to most woodn coastrs. Th xisting tracks gt rbuilt so many tims, Grubb said. Without just putting on a whol nw wood track, you r fighting a battl in which you hav to kp rplacing pics and sctions. Traditional wood tracks gt to a point whr you r just fixing thm all th tim. Colossus was always an iconic rid; it was always a good rid. But fatigu took ovr. Th big advantag to putting th nw I-Box track on it is that it gratly rducs maintnanc in th futur. Also, it allows us to add nw lmnts to th rid. With rgard to som of th giddir acrobatics Twistd Colossus prforms along its cours, Grubb laughd whn it was suggstd that his tam dviss ths xtrm coastr movs with a findish grin. Yah, that s tru somwhat, h said. Alan is a gnius at coming up with nw idas, as wll as our tam. A goal is that w want vrybody to b abl to rid th rid, and to do that, w hav to mak it xtrmly smooth. And that s what w v found with our rids: vrybody can njoy ths xprincs vn though thy ar xtrmly aggrssiv. Th raction to Twistd Colossus has bn hug. Gtting to that point has its challngs, Grubb acknowldgd spcially on a rbuild projct such at this on. Just to gt vrything figurd out, and th tim that taks, is a challng, h said. It s hardr to rbuild than it is to build nw. So w do th bst w can to accuratly survy an xisting coastr. You hav to b on top Rocky Mountain Construction's signatur IBox Track and custom trains, which hav sphrical baring hitchs, allow Twistd Colossus to prform th "High Fiv" and two invrsions among a whopping 18 airtim lifts. W had a littl bit of clanup to do. W had to cut th coastr down furthr byond th burnt aras and build it back up. It probably addd about 10 days to our work schdul. RMC taks prid in using Amrican-mad matrials and maintaining quality control by doing all its track and train production in-hous. Th Twistd Colossus trains thmslvs ar marvls of nginring thir cars connctd with sphrical baring hitchs that allow for th coastr s srpntin undulations and rapid dirctional changs. Th sating s comfort is th rsult of a trmndous amount of tim doing rgonomic tsting, said Grubb, whil th rdundancy built into RMC s vigorously tstd, harnss-fr hydraulic rstraint systm and magntic braking systm nsurs passngr safty. RMC was happy to lav som Twistd Colossus tasks to othr profssionals: SFMM handld th control systms, whil Baynum Painting of Nwport, Ky., had up to 25 workrs onsit for thr months prssur-washing th woodn structur and applying about 5,000 gallons of Shrwin Williams Extra Whit prmium acrylic paint. So whn fair officials at th Ohio Stat Fair flt it was tim to rplac thir "old" Smoky Bar, a 14.5-foot figur of th famous fir-prvntion bar that had bn grting thir fairgors for th last 50 yars for a "nw" Smoky Bar, thy knw thy had to mak it a labor of lov and balanc. Plus, th $80,250 it was going to cost for th "nw" Smoky was a motivation to gt it right. Smoky Bar was brought into th wildfir prvntion srvic in 1944 by th fforts of th U.S. Forst Srvic. Fiftn yars aftr his dbut, Smoky mad his hom at th Ohio Stat Fair. Constructd by th Ohio Division of Forstry's carpntry shop, h was mad of a varity of matrials including plywood, wir and fibrglass.
