The North Lakes District Klondike Derby will take place at: Ensign Ranch 3551 Hundley Road Cle Elum, WA Phone: For General Information contact: Rob Rydberg Klondike Derby Chairman (mobile) (home) Page 2 of 11 Last Updated: 1/26/17
Registration We have currently reserved all the cabins for Klondike 2017 and we have ordered SNOW!! Approved by the North Lakes District Committee, we have simplified the fee schedule and combined all the fees into a single price per scout and adult. The charges will be as follows: Scout or Adult: $12 Webelos (and one parent): $12 OA or Event Coordinators: $0 The single price will cover the Klondike Registration, Ranch Use Fee and Cabin Fee (if you get one). The units or individuals will be responsible for other purchased items such as fire wood, etc. Fees will be collected when your troop pays a deposit through the Seattle BSA website and when you check-in at Klondike. You will pay the balance of the money owed at check-in based on the amount of scouts and adults that are attending. Hopefully, this will simplify the collection process. Instructions for reserving a cabin and registering your troop to attend Klondike 2017: Scout units may reserve a cabin by going into the events registration portion of the Seattle BSA website: Scroll down to North Lakes District and click the register link. Your deposit to reserve a cabin is $72. After making the deposit, contact Dave Criss (docriss@gmail.com) and he will inform you of the cabins available at that time. It is first come first serve so register early! Attached is the Ensign Ranch Standards & Policies Form that all units MUST follow. Units will not be allowed to stay overnight on Saturday under the current registration. Refer all registration questions to: Rick B Powell North Lakes District Chairman rickbpowell@comcast.net Page 3 of 11 Last Updated: 1/26/17

Event Descriptions SLED INSPECTION Sleds will be inspected for approved construction dimensions. Specifically, the Height, Width, & Length. Sleds must be made from wood with skis as runners or wood runners. Please see the attached sled construction sheet. RIVER CROSSING When your patrol arrives at the Yukon River you will find a single rope spanning a 30-foot gap at a very narrow point of our imaginary Yukon River. The patrols task is to move all their gear, their sled, and at least 4 scouts across the river. The patrol that can demonstrate the best team work, show the most scout spirit with a patrol yell and a flag will do well in this event. The fastest time crossing wouldn t hurt either. FIRE BUILDING Patrols will be provided a bundle of dry fire wood. They will use this to prepare to light a fire and burn through two strings suspended at different heights above their fire pan. This is a timed event and time begins when the spark is struck. Further instruction will be provided at the event. TEAM SNOW SHOES All patrol members will navigate a short course that begins and ends at the same point. The catch is all patrol members will be wearing the same pair of snow shows at the same time. The snow shows are made from two wooden planks and have room for up all patrol members to step in and start walking. It is all about Team Work. BUNGEE RUN Each patrol member will take one measured run to place a gallon jug of water as far as possible from the starting point. The catch is there will be two extra-long bungee cords attached to the scout making difficult to get away. FIRST AID We do not know what has been cooked up for us this year, but we all know it will involve some moulage. You can expect open wounds, hidden wounds, maybe even a compound fracture, maybe a burn, an animal bite, frost bite, hypothermia, gun shot, etc. Use your imagination, but make sure you know your first aid A, B, C s (and D s and E s). BLIND OBSTACLE COURSE All but one of the patrol members are suffering from SNOW BLINDNESS. On top of that, the patrol member that isn t blind has been injured and must remain in the sled. While riding in the sled the injured scout must provide directions to all the blind scouts to move the sled through an obstacle course. Page 8 of 11 Last Updated: 1/26/17
RAFT RESCUE The patrol is crossing an ice-cold river on your raft (a small tarp), when you strike a rock and take damage. Without any scout touching the ice-cold water, flip the raft over so you can do repairs. Then flip the raft back over so you can continue to the other side. JACOB S LADDER All A Jacob s ladder was used along the Chilkoot Pass trail for the gold miners to climb up and over steep sections. The Klondike stampeders built these ladders quickly to move their sleds along the trail as the rushed to reach the Klondike gold fields. The ladder is constructed of two 12-foot poles and has five 3-foot-long rungs. The poles and rungs are about 2 inches in diameter. The competition is a timed event to construct the ladder as quickly as possible with 5 rungs. The patrol climbs a steep bank with the ladder and then pulls up their sled to finish. All materials are provided, but scouts can use their own lashing ropes if desired for extra credit. Besides using the traditional square lashing in the scout handbook for the rungs on a ladder. If you ve mastered those, some faster lashings are provided in the links below. Ladder Lashing - Japanese Square Lashing, Mark II - All Japanese Square Lashings - ICE RESCUE Each patrol will demonstrate at least three different techniques for rescuing someone who has fallen through the ice of a lake or river. Patrols must bring their own materials to perform a rescue; however, there may be a few things at hand that could be used. Do some research. BEAR BAG Each patrol will place all the food items they have with them into a bag and suspend the bag from a tree so the local bears cannot steal it during the night. For maximum points the bag must be12 feet off the ground, 9 feet from the tree trunk, and 6 feet below the branches of the tree. In addition, the rope muse tied off at least 6 feet above the ground. TIPPING POINT Each patrol is required to place their sled on a platform that is lying across a log. It is a good idea to make sure the platform is centered on the log because once your sled is on it you will load all your gear into the sled and then, working together, each patrol member will get onto the platform. The idea is to balance the platform with all patrol members, gear, and sled so both ends of the platform are off the ground. Page 9 of 11 Last Updated: 1/26/17
LEMMING TOSS Each patrol will have a few minutes to assemble as many snowballs as possible. Then, the patrol will try to hit as many snowmen as possible down range. NUGGET TOSS Each patrol will toss a tennis ball over an obstacle 10 to 14 feet in the air without using their hands. The patrol will use a blanket to accomplish the nugget toss. All members of the patrol will hold the edges of the blanket with both hands and the event judge will place the ball into the blanket. The patrol members will need to coordinate their movements and toss the ball up and over the obstacle. There may be extra points if they can catch the ball in the blanket after making it over. The patrol that can accomplish this task in the fastest time along with showing the most patrol spirit, the best patrol flag, and the best patrol yell will take first place in this event. DASH TO DAWSON All patrols line up on one side of the field and then when the signal is given all patrols take off running with their sled and gear to the finish line on the other side of the field. The first three patrols that finish the run will be awarded points. This is the final event of the Klondike Derby REMEMBER >>>> SCOUT SPIRIT SHOWN THROUGH TEAMWORK, PATROL FLAGS, PATROL YELLS, AND DOING GOOD TURNS WILL BE CONSIDERED WHEN SCORING EACH EVENT. Page 10 of 11 Last Updated: 1/26/17
