2 Klondike Rules There are many new events this year so brush up on your scout skills and grab your gear! Mystery bonus points awarded this year. Points for Adult volunteers and for camping. Before each patrol sets out for the morning events we want to avoid any actual situations by presenting a safety briefing on conditions they may encounter during the day. Each sled must be equipped with the items listed on page 8. It is also important to note that in the case of no snow, each sled should have wheels for easier navigation of the camp and the park. Each sled team will have one patrol leader. The patrol leader will be in charge of the patrol score sheet (Sled teams cannot start an event unless the score sheet is present). At the start of the event the patrol leader will hand the station counselor the score sheet. Then the counselor will give the directions and each patrol will then be given 15 minutes to complete the tasks. Remember points will be given on scout spirit, ability and teamwork. All patrols must be appropriately dressed for the weather, or they will not be allowed to participate for their own safety. That means long underwear, caps, and gloves, wool or synthetic socks, waterproofed boots (Preferably not leather unless they have been treated with Camp-Dry or similar product) and layers of outerwear. Cotton is very hard to keep dry in wet weather and should not be worn. Also wear rain gear if necessary. Second year Webelos are encouraged to come and participate in the Saturday activities. It is also important that the Cub Scouts and their Leaders/ parents come appropriately dressed. This is a great opportunity to see what kind of outdoor skills they will learn in Boy Scouts. Plus, it gives them a chance to learn and have fun! Some events may require observation only from the Cub Scouts. Registration: Pre-register by Jan. 20th for $10.00 each, includes patch and cracker-barrel. Register the day of the event for $13.00 each, includes patch and cracker-barrel. Registration form can be found on page 11.

3 CAMPING: Jamboree style. LEADERSHIP: At least two registered adult Leaders must accompany and remain with each Unit at the Camporee. WATER: Water will be available. FIRES: Fires will be allowed, providing all Leave No Trace guidelines are followed (unless we are under a fire ban). Absolutely no ground fires will be allowed. All fires must be in an elevated fire pit with water available to extinguish the fire. FIREWORKS: Fireworks are not allowed. LATRINES: Latrine facilities will be available. Units and Scouts should not dig or construct their own latrines! Bring extra toilet paper. Female Scouters will have their own separate indoor facility. LANTERN & FUELS: Rules should be adhered to according to BSA policy. STOVES: Fuel must be stored away from fires and cooking area and absolutely NO LANTERNS OR FLAMES IN TENTS. CLEAN-UP: Each Units adult Leaders will be responsible for insuring that its campsite is clean prior to leaving. All trash must leave with your Unit. Leave No Trace! VISITORS: All are welcome especially to the Saturday indoor campfire. TEAMS: Teams should have between 6 and 8 Scouts. PARKING: The parking area will be posted. Staff will be on hand to direct you to the camping sites. A vehicle may be available to haul Troop gear to your campsite. Scouts are responsible for carrying their personal gear to their campsite. HEALTH FORMS: Units are responsible for ensuring all participants have up-to-date Health Forms. CAMP FIRE: All Units MUST be prepared with a skit or song. Start planning now. FOOD: All Units should bring their own food for all their meals.

5 Cracker Barrel: All Scouts and leaders are invited to Cracker barrel on Friday night. Plenty of hot chocolate and snacks will be available at this time. This will also be where leaders and Scouts will hear announcements and instructions for the weekend. Events: Troops/patrols will be put into groups to rotate through the stations. Scouts should be prepared to discuss the elements listed below with the station counselors. At every station, each Unit will be able to earn gold nuggets based on how well each task is done. Nuggets are given at the station counselor s discretion. (Remember each station is 15 minutes, and nuggets are awarded based on knowledge, team work and patrol spirit.) 1. First Aid for Cold/Hot Weather Camping 2. Ice Rescue Units may be asked to demonstrate some first aid techniques. As a patrol work together and save your patrol member who is away from shore. 3. Pioneering Working as a patrol, lash together a flag pole and raise your patrol flag! 4. Fire Building 5. Knots Each patrol must build a fire with only the material they bring and then must be able to start it by using one (1) match. Make sure your fire is nice and HOT! (Subtract 2 points for every additional match used to start the fire. Matches will be provided) Each patrol must be able to tie the knots located on the knot board. The knots will include the two half hitches, taut line, bow-line, timber hitch, square knot, sheet bend, and clove hitch. 6. Compass Each patrol must locate the correct item by using their compass. 7. Obstacle Course Your patrol must complete the obstacle course threw a mine field to retrieve and/or deliver an object. 8. Shooting Range Patrols will test their shooting skills.

6 Events Continued: 9. Shelter-Building Patrols need to be able to build a shelter for a cold winter night. 10. Rack-em & Stack-em Climb up to survive. Practice going up and coming down safely using a belay. 11. River Crossing Each patrol needs to build a bridge to cross the river. The sled and gear need to come as well. 12. Gone Fishing Make sure you can catch you dinner from the river. 13. Morse Code You never know when you might need to use Morse code to signal for help. 14. Scout Trivia All I will say is be prepared! 15. Bear-ly hanging on If you go out in the woods today KEEP YOUR FOOD UP! 16. Ready Set Go Teams that work together succeed together. Want to earn Extra Points? Feeling Hot Hot Hot Compete in the Hot Chocolate Competition. Units will need to bring all supplies needed for this. Presentation counts, so be creative! Hiking Trip Friday Night Only Prepare for that hiking trip at Philmont by back-packing for the whole Klondike weekend. FIVE bonus points for the Troop with the entire Troop in attendance that weekend to participate. Scouts will have to start at the front gate of the park, set up camp and enjoy the weekend. This isn t car camping, you must pack it in and pack it out. Make sure the Troop arrives early if you want to take advantage of the extra points! SPL meeting starts at 8 p.m. sharp and points will not be awarded if not completed before SPL meeting.

7 Campfire Program Our campfire program and awards ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. At this time the winners of the derby will be announced and awards will be presented. All Scouts, Leaders, and families are invited. Packing List Scouts should be sure to pack adequately for the Klondike, remembering to include appropriate clothing, personal hygiene items, eating and sleeping gear. Scouts should also be sure to include the following: Scout uniforms Class B is ok Rain gear Compass Flashlight Canteen Extra change of socks * SAFETY NOTE: This could potentially be a COLD weather campout and you should come prepared for that with enough gear to keep you warm. Remember to dress in layers. It is advised that your Unit discuss cold weather camping and what to bring and do during the campout in the month or weeks prior to the campout. Another thought would be to also plan for rain as it has rained in the past.

8 Sled supplies: Other than your personal gear or any other items you want to carry on your patrol sled, the following items are mandatory and must be on your sled (or be carried by one of your patrol members): Patrol flag (must have) Scout Handbook Watch 12 x 12 tarp 4 Ropes for lashings One 3/8 x 50 rope 5 tent stakes Trekking pole or staff Water bottles with water for each Scout and adult on the trail First aid kit Sleeping bag or blanket Sunscreen Trail snacks Paper & pencil or pen Flashlight or headlamp Pocket knife Spare clothes, shoes, and socks Fire starters and supplies to build a fire that will last 15 minutes (tinder, kindling, fuel wood) Trash bag Staff Needs/Contact Information A judge/counselor will be needed for each event. Older boys will also be needed for a number of tasks throughout the weekend.
