2 KLONDIKE DERBY 2014 This year s Klondike Derby will focus on the pioneering skills, basic Scout skills, and team building events. Each patrol or mushing team will follow a course in numerical order as outlined on a map given to the head musher. The map will guide you around to the various stations. As the teams arrive at each station, the teams should demonstrate their Scout spirit by giving a patrol yell and displaying a Patrol Flag. Points will be deducted from the scores if they don t show their Scout spirit. All towns must be visited and visited in the correct order to gain the most points. Scouts should also be prepared to answer Scout knowledge questions to earn nuggets for the Gold Nugget Rush. Scouts shall be prepared for cold weather and general first aid, knots, lashings and team work. Sleds are not required this year, but we will have a competition for best sled. Sled must be youth scout built and not use any metal fasteners. Any scout who is deemed to not be properly dressed for the weather will not be allowed to participate. Who can attend the Klondike Derby? Reference to the Guide to Safe Scouting all scouts and leaders registered in Boy Scout troops may participate in the Klondike Derby (camporee). Webelos Scouts may participate during the day Saturday in the Konza Klondike Derby if attached to a Boy Scout troop, but not camp overnight. All troops must present a local tour permit to participate. Meals Troops will be required to provide Saturday and Sunday breakfast and Saturday night meal. Saturday lunch will be provided by the Klondike staff (chili dogs). Hot drinks will be provided at cracker barrel and lunch, but each scout and leader must supply their own cup. Cracker Barrel There will be a Friday night cracker barrel for all, just remember it is not a meal. Registration We will need an approximate number of scouts, webelos, and leaders as soon as possible. Cost for troops will be $8.00 per registered youth and $5.00 per registered adult. Late registration after February 4 is $12.00 per youth and $8.00 per adult. There will not be patches ordered for those who register late. 3 2014 SLED EQUIPMENT LIST (For those entering a sled in Sled Competition) Scouts should be prepared. Give consideration to the essential 10 items needed for the type of outing. The following is not an exhaustive list. Gear on the sled must be adequately secured so that it would not come loose and be a problem on the trail. Sled Harness Sleds will be built as the patrol pioneering project. Patrol roster (Mushing Team) Boy Scout Handbook Pioneering MB Workbook (each scout and filled out), Pencil Patrol Flag Individual water bottles (full at start) Drinking cup (hot liquids) Watch Knife (Totin Chip) Flashlight Rain Gear for each member Compass Blanket First Aid Kit and neckerchief for each member 6 of rope for each member for knots Two 6 poles Tarp Fire Building Material (tinder, 9 volt battery/steel wool or flint/steel or friction method) Bundle of kindling Gold Bag

5 Event Description Station 1 Rope making, knots, and lashings Scouts will practice tying knots and lashings as well as make several feet of Rope. Station 2 Primitive containers Scouts will make a primitive container from materials they might find in a survival situation. Station 3 Edible plants and primitive tools Guest speaker will have a program/activity on the topic. Station 4 Fire building Scouts will have the opportunity to practice different fire starting techniques. Station 5 First Aid Scouts will be given an emergency scenario in which they must demonstrate first aid knowledge. Catapult Activity Activity will start at 2:00 p.m. and have a competition for longest throw by 4:30 p.m. Scouts will build a snowball thrower. Materials and a basic design will be provided. If patrols wish to use their own design or deviate from the one provided patrols will need to bring their own additional spars. No other materials will be allowed.

This competition is about the Youth, their pioneering skills, and their scout skills. Assessment will be based on: Creativity Sturdiness Craftsmanship Youth Built No Metal Fasteners

7 Klondike General Information The Klondike Derby is an opportunity for scouts to demonstrate/ show off their winter camping skills. Claim Jumpers. Patrols may encounter a HOLD UP in which they are asked questions: they may be awarded gold for correct answers and have gold STOLEN for incorrect answers. Campsites should be clean/orderly. Clearly defined by rope or other means. Have a gateway or other obvious entrance. Appropriate information posted. Make use of Pioneering skills (knots and lashings). The gold fields are in BEAR country, a plan for dealing with bears will keep the BEARS (camp inspectors) on friendlier terms. Scout spirit. Each patrol should fly their patrol flag from their sled. Each patrol should also give their patrol yell as they arrive at each station. Sled Gear o A general list was given earlier. (Teams should give thought to the essential 10 items they would need if they were not returning to base camp for two days.) All gear must be securely stowed on the sled. A light weight container such as a Rubbermaid Tote would be an acceptable accessory but creativity and time period correct alternative may get awarded extra gold.
