1 Official Sandia District Spring 00 Camporee Registration Packet When: April rd thru April th 00 Where: Cochiti Lake C-Loop Camp Ground Cost: $.00 per participant through April th, 00 (includes patch, leaders cracker barrel, recognitions and awards, and a blast weekend) of 0
2 Administrative Items REGISTRATION FEE: $.00 per person, due by April th TROOP ROSTER: Turn in the roster of those attending the Camporee when you check in. Please ensure each Scout s rank is with their name. The form is in this packet. SERVICE PROJECT WAIVER: All scouts and adults who work on the service project a must provide the wavier release signed by a parent or guardian, see last page. TOUR PERMITS: Turn in to Council by April th. SAFETY EQUIPMENT: Scouts should have the following items: Scout Outdoor Essential gear for hiking as specified in your BSA Handbook, Sunscreen, and Insect Repellant. TWO DEEP LEADERSHIP: National Policy on Two-Deep Leadership and required leader training applies at this Camporee. LATRINES: There are two latrines on site, one is a Men s and Woman s. DRESS AND UNIFORMING: Dress appropriately for the weather. The Scout uniform is always appropriate and highly encouraged for wear at assemblies and Campfire/Tap-Out. WATER: Limited potable water will be available at the camp ground through two hydrants. FIRE: It is anticipated that propane or gas stoves will be permitted. There will be no open fires in the camp area. Permission for contained charcoal fires in existing grills will be determined closer to the Camporee dates. Every Troop will not have a Grill at their Camp site. Updates and final say on this will be available from Andy Braman. TRASH: Please pack it out with you. PARKING: Parking is severely limited at this location. It is highly recommended that troops consolidate riders as much as possible. It is likely that Troops will be limited two vehicles in C loop. No Campers or Rv s will be allowed in the Camp loop. There are other camp sites available, for a fee, out side of the loop. OA Tap Out: Scouts elected to the Order of the Arrow this Spring will be tapped out during the program Saturday evening. Make sure your Troop/Team has scheduled their election before the middle of April. CAMP-O-REE SUPPORT: Each troop will provide at least one adult volunteer for each patrol entered in the Camporee. 4 Event Descriptions This Camporee is a celebration of traditional Scout skills. Patrols will be challenged to perform traditional scout skills. They will be scored according to their scout spirit, teamwork, and how well they perform the skill. Troops and Teams will compete together, Venture Crews will compete against Venture Crews and Webelos patrols will compete against Webelos patrols. Every one will compete together in the Field Games. All skills are First Class or below. The Events are: Fire by Friction: The Patrol will start a fire using a Bow Drill and only materials available to Scouts in the 0 s. Practical Pioneering: No three stave tripods here. The patrol needs to work together using pioneering techniques to build a solution to a problem. Estimations: The patrols will have to use traditional techniques to estimate heights, lengths and distances. The Scouts may use objects of known dimensions, but no rulers or tape measures. Signaling: The patrols will be divided, given a message and the means to send and receive the message using Morse code. Service Project: The patrol will perform a minute service project. It is important that the patrols arrive at the service project area at their scheduled time. All scouts and adults participating in the Service Project will need to provide a signed waiver, see last page. Stove lighting: The patrol will make an edible pancake. They will have to light a white gas camp stove, mix batter, cook a pancake, and a patrol member(s) eat the pancake. The patrol needs to bring their own pancake mix (no frozen or premixed batter), a way to mix it and a pan to cook in. Some supplies may be available, but there will be a penalty Be prepared. Trails: The patrol will learn traditional trail signs and follow a trail. First Aid: The patrol will practice their First aid Skills. Animal Tracking: The patrol will practice their skills identifying and tracking animals by their tracks. Field Games: The entire Camporee will compete in several traditional scout field games. They will include: Stretcher Race: The Patrol will construct a hasty stretcher, and race carrying a patrol member. Knot Relay: Each member of the patrol will have the run across the assembly field and tie one of the required scout knots. Other Scout Games TBD. of 0
5 Special Award- Heritage Award: All troops are encouraged to participate in a special streamer for this Camp-O-Ree, the Heritage Award. To earn this streamer for your Troop or Patrol Flag you must: Build a traditional gateway to your campsite using pioneering techniques. And do one of the following: Have a display of at least five items Scout Memorabilia at least 0 years old, and be able to describe what they are. Demonstrate a scout skill which is no longer in the books. Have someone in the Troop or Patrol wear a uniform at lease 0 years old and be able to tell the differences between that uniform and today s uniforms. Note- youth must pin their correct rank on the uniform, no instant promotions. All patrols participating in the Camp-O-Ree may earn this streamer. There is a place on your troop roster to identify if the patrol is earning this award. Staff will tour the campsites at dinner time Saturday to verify that the patrols have earned the Heritage Award. What to Bring: Patrols: For the Stretcher race each patrol needs the materials to make a hasty stretcher such as two scout staves or similar stout wooden pole and a blanket or tarp. The patrol must bring the makings for a pancake, such as batter mix, liquid required for the mix, something to mix it in (zip lock bag), butter, oil or cooking spray, and a pan. A white gas stove will be at the event site. Individual scouts: In addition to Scout Outdoor Essential gear for hiking as specified in your BSA Handbook, Sunscreen, and Insect Repellant. Each scout will need a piece of rope for tying knots approximately ¼inch diameter and at least feet long.
