1 PACIFICA DISTRICT 2010 KLONDIKE DERBY, Feb Snow camping with Scouts is really cool! WHO?: All Boy Scouts WHAT?: The Klondike Derby is a youth-run winter camp out in the snow. (Yes, we actually hope there will be SNOW!) The derby will focus on exciting and challenging, team-building activities. WHERE?: Circle X Forest Lawn Scout Reservation at Lake Arrowhead. WHY?: Because we can! Anybody can camp in the desert or mountains when it is warm and sunny. It takes real Scouts to camp in the snow! This will be your funnest campout of the year. WE NEED YOUR HELP: - We would like one scout from each Klondike troop to be on staff. - Please call or me his name and phone number, ASAP. Thanks for your support. 2 WHAT TO BRING YOURSELF! You d feel really sad if you left yourself behind. FOOD! If you don t bring it and cook it you don t eat it. WATER! There is no plumbing at the camp. However, there is a stream if you want to filter water when you get there. I recommend you just bring it. TENT, WARM SLEEPING BAG, and a GROUND INSULATING PAD! WARM WINTER CLOTHING! It will be cold even if there is no snow. If there is snow you want to make sure the boys don t show up in tennis shoes. Snow gloves, boots and thermal underwear may be necessary. A KLONDIKE SPIRIT! That means a spirit of adventure. If there is snow, why not try to build an igloo or sleep in a snow cave? Of course, there will be prizes for the best one if mother nature cooperates. 2

3 SATURDAY EVENTS THE GREAT KLONDIKE DERBY RACE - Each troop should bring a sled. It can be as simple as a pair of skis nailed to a box or a more elaborate one as shown. The only rule is that it must be able to carry a scout and be able to be pulled by patrol members... The race will be professionally timed and the winning patrol will get a special award to hang on their troop flag. FIRST AID - A scout has broken his leg. The patrol must splint the leg and then lash together a stretcher and carry the injured scout to a safe place. COMPASS COURSE - The patrol is lost and must figure out how to get home by navigating a compass course. (Please bring your own compass.) TWO MAN SAW - A log is blocking your path. Using a two man saw the patrol must cut the log in half to be able to continue onward. This a timed event. SMOOSHBOARD RACE - Patrol members right feet are tied to one long 2X4 and left feet to another. The patrol has to go over a course and around obstacles on their extra long snow shoes making sure no man is left behind. This is a timed event. SNOWBALL LAUNCH - The Yeti is attacking! The patrol must stop the Yeti and his smaller friends with a giant sling shot. Points are awarded for each hit. A smaller target is worth more points. Highest score wins. DEAD HORSE CARRY - Your horse has died and you have to get all your gear up a steep hill. It is heavy and in a plastic tarp. Ropes will be available if the patrol wants to use them. This is a timed event. TOMAHAWK THROW - The Eskimos are upset because you are taking all their gold. You have to learn how to defend yourself in case they attack. GOLD PAN TOSS - (Frisbee Golf) The entire patrol or troop can play this. The only rule is that each participant throws in the same rotation from beginning to end. Lowest score wins. There are 6 holes and it will take the participants over the river and through the woods. SNOWMAN BUILDING CONTEST - Each troop will build it s own snowman to protect their campsite from Yeti attacks. The staff will choose the best looking, and most powerful one. It should be fun for the patrols to build an awesome snowman together. Since this is completely subjective, we promise not to be persuaded by food and deserts, BUT IT IS OK TO TRY! 3

4 GIANT SNOWBALL FIGHT - This will be an afternoon event and will be organized like Dodgeball. I have no idea how we will decide a winner. OPTIONAL - Circle X has an indoor climbing wall. There may be an extra charge for this event. We ll let you know. As you can see, there will be more events this year than last year. If you can think of any other games that the boys would enjoy, please call me. THE KLONDIKE DERBY RACE We are not sticklers when it comes to sled design. The only rule for the competition is that it be able to carry a boy and be pulled by his patrol. We will award the troop with the most awesome sled design and the troop that finishes the course with the fastest time. You can run the course as many times as you would like. 4

5 FRIDAY EVENING SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Each Troop must register at our Staff headquarters upon arrival. If you haven t prepaid in advance, Luprele Secrist will be more than happy to COLLECT your money upon arrival. Cost is $12 per person. (This is $3 less than last year.) 9:00 P.M. - Our Klondike Staff will provide a campfire program and cracker barrel. SATURDAY 8:30 a.m. - Flag ceremony and instructions 8:45 a.m. - Let the games begin. There is no order to the activities. The important thing is to participate in all of the activities. The winning troops at each activity will get special awards to go on their troop flags. Each scout whose patrol participates in all the events will get a rare, one of a kind, and highly valued Klondike Derby patch. 12:30 p.m. - LUNCH 1:30 p.m. - Giant Snowball fight. 2:30 p,m, - Awards ceremony at the flag pole in the parking area. TROOP ACTIVITIES - 8:00 p.m. Staff will provide Smores at the fire bowl. SUNDAY This is your day. There are no planned activities, but here are some suggestions. Plan a Sunday church service; go on a nature hike; tell stories; leisurely pack up and drive down the mountain. The camp site is ours until about 3:00 p.m. 5

9 DIRECTIONS TO FOREST LAWN SCOUT RESERVATION (CIRCLE X) Hook Creek Rd. Cedar Glen Take the 91 to the 215 heading for San Bernardino Exit Highland Ave/Mt. Resorts Go for a couple of miles and exit Waterman Ave.- Hwy 18 Turn left, stay on Hwy 18 for about 30 minutes, and turn left at Lake Arrowhead exit - Hwy 173 Turn right at the stop sign and you are still on Hwy Lake Arrowhead is now on your left Stay on Hwy 173 for 1.6 miles and turn right on Hook Creek road. A small gas station is on the corner and the road sign says Cedar Glen Follow Hook Creek Road for 1 mile and you ll see a sign on your right that says FOREST LAWN SCOUT RESERVATION Turn right and stay on this road until the VERY END. (3 miles +/-) You will pass several buildings and another large scouting event that is happening at the same time just keep coming. We will have signs posted so you don t get lost. CAUTION: Watch the weather. If there actually is snow, you might need chains. SEE YOU THERE 9
