2 Theme: The theme is Winter Games Dates: Friday to Saturday February nd, 2014 There is one night of optional cold weather winter camping (Friday). Troops that choose to camp should have experience with and be prepared for sub-freezing camping. The Klondike Derby activity will take place on Saturday February 22 nd, :00am 4:00pm Costs: Check In: Klondike Derby Event: Early Bird Registration (Before February 10, 2014): $8.00 per Scout or Leader Registration (February 11th to February 21st, 2014): $10.00 per Scout or Leader Staff: $5.00 per Scouter Please register online at: 1. Friday Night February 21 st, 2014 Camping Check in and Klondike Pre-registration (Avoid the Saturday morning lines)! a. 5:30PM-8:00PM (Hard cutoff at 8PM the staff need sleep for the morning) 2. Klondike Registration-Saturday February 22nd, 2014 a. 7:00A-8:30A Those that registered Friday night do not need to re-register.

3 KLONDIKE EVENT Station Setup: Station Masters are responsible to check by 7:30am for assignment of their station site. Stations must be set up between 7:30 8:30am. Stations masters are to report to the opening ceremony that they are all set up at 8:30am. First Aid and Warming facilities: Each patrol should have their own first aid kit, and be prepared to treat minor injuries. There will be qualified medical personnel at the Klondike Event to treat any medical emergencies. Warming facilities will only be provided during the Klondike Event. Troops that are camping need to provide their own facilities, if deemed necessary. Klondike Lunch: Soup, hot water and hot cocoa will be provided at the Klondike HQ, it is strongly recommended that each patrol pack supplemental ready to eat lunch items to their taste! Charitable Donations: Non-perishable food item: It is requested that each patrol bring one non-perishable food item as a part of their registration. Patrols doing so will receive bonus points in their score sheet. Proper Clothing: Winter boots only. NO SNEAKERS. Participants wearing Sneakers will be asked to leave and get proper winter footwear. Theme costumes are encouraged provided that they are worn over winter appropriate layers of clothing! (Please see attached Winter Camping Guide). Leadership Participation: A good program is based on volunteers. Patrols will receive Bonus Points for if their Troop Leaders pre-register to Run a Station, Assist in a Station or Assist in the HQ. Awards and Scoring: There will be a maximum of 100 points at each station, with the majority of points being directed toward the event at that station. A scorecard will be handed to each patrol leader at check-in. This is a record of your points during the Klondike Derby, it will be specially marked at each station for record of having participated, and it is your responsibility to keep this with you at all times. Scorecards will be turned in to headquarters (see schedule). Ribbons will be awarded based upon patrol performance.

4 Patrol Supplies: PLEASE REVIEW THE LIST OF STATIONS AND DETERMINE WHAT YOUR PATROL WILL NEED! STATIONS 2, 6, & 8, require that you bring your own supplies to participate! Station Timing: Each station will run for 25 minutes. There will be five minutes to travel between stations. You must stay at your station and only travel during the allotted five minute times. Your patrol will be assigned five stations before lunch and five stations after lunch. This is not a timed race. Station Order: Each Patrol will receive their station order during registration. Going to stations out of order will result in penalty points.

5 Overnight Camping Campsites: Campsites will be assigned on a first come first serve basis, be prepared to carry or sled your gear in. (The distance may be several hundred yards). Before leaving the campsite every unit must completely police their area. All trash must be picked up and packed out nothing should be left behind. Troops must checkout with the Klondike staff before leaving their campsites. Troops should strive to leave their Campsite better than they found it. Troops that are winter camping are expected to be Self Sufficient and Prepared for subfreezing conditions. Klondike Staff will be working proactively with Unit leadership to prevent any cold weather medical or safety issues during this event! First Aid and Warming facilities: Troops are responsible for the safety of their members during the camping event. Warming facilities will not be available during non-klondike event times. Fires: There will be no ground fires allowed at this event. Please make plans to have your fires off the ground and contained in a safe way. Leaders are asked to police their Scouts to be sure fires are kept at a safe size. Ash disposal: To be determined and announcement will be made at the event. Garbage: Pack in and pack out. No disposal available on site. Sanitary Facilities: Port-o-lets or sanitary facilities will be available near the camping area for this event. Please, do not make yellow snow. Water: Water will be available but again it will be quite a distance from where we are camping. Be prepared to haul water from a distance equal or greater than what we will be carrying our gear!

6 Klondike Derby Events* 1) The Shrinking Glacier- The Entire Patrol (all members) has to all stand securely on very small area for 15 seconds. 2) Chernobyl Dam Break- Each Patrol has to use camp craft skills to securely elevate the bottom of the sled at least as high as their shortest scout and attach a flashlight beacon to the sled. (Staves and lashing is one approach, do not limit your creativity)! BRING YOUR OWN SUPPLIES! 3) Speed Sledding-Speed Sled Race- Straight run 50 yds best of 3 time trials 4) Aquatic Event-How far is that? Your patrol comes upon a river that you need to cross. Use your scout skills to estimate the distance across. 5) Marathon-Iditarod 2014-Race around the fairgrounds course (timed event) 6) Skiing-First Aid-Ski Accident-Demonstrate proper First Aid for treatment and transport for the victim of a ski accident. BRING YOUR OWN SUPPLIES! 7) Team Cross Country Skiing-(Smooshboard)-Patrol members right feet are tied to one long 2x4; left feet to another 2x4. Patrol is timed in walking a course on flat ground. Boards and bindings provided by Klondike Staff. 8) Olympic Village-Shelter Building- Your patrol becomes lost with night falling quickly. Using the patrol method, construct a shelter to spend the night in. Bring a tarp, rope and scout staffs. Snow and shovels will be provided weather permitting. BRING YOUR OWN SUPPLIES! 9) Biathlon-Cannon Shoot- Klondike staff will provide snowball cannons for winter target shooting. 10) Top Secret- A special event that all participants except for 1 or 2 staff members will immensely enjoy!
