1 Lake Sands District Fall 2010 Historic Merit Badges CAMP JAMBO SPANISH TRAILS SCOUT RESERVATION Friday, October 1 st Sunday, October 3 rd

2 The purpose of this is to provide an opportunity to earn and learn about four Historic Merit Badges, and have fun. The will reinforce Scouting traditions by encouraging patrols to have a camp gadget at their campsites as well as keeping a clean and organized campsite. Each Patrol and Troop should bring their respective flags. The patrols will be judged on their flags and their Patrol yell. Troops are also requested to bring proper documentation demonstrating adherence to BSA policies regarding Tour Permits as well as safety equipment (part of the Top Troop scoring system). Each SPL will need to work with his Scoutmaster to come up with a Scouting game that can be scored for the Patrols to compete in. The SPL s will decide at the Friday night Meeting which Scouting Games will be conducted. Other activities and a detailed event schedule will be presented at the Scoutmaster / SPL Cracker-barrel Friday night. Since having them participate in Boy Scout events such as this strengthens recruitment of Webelos Scouts into Troops, Troops are encouraged to invite their feeder pack Webelos Dens to attend. Webelos from packs that don t feed a specific troop are encouraged to attend as well. All Webelos must, of course, have a parent or guardian in attendance with them and be properly supervised throughout Saturday. Webelos cannot camp overnight during the. Scouts are encouraged to not wear their field ( Class A ) uniforms during the challenges, but save them for the Saturday night campfire ceremony and Sunday morning church service. Wear an activity uniform ( Class B ) consisting of a T-shirt and green trousers or shorts (with belt of course) for the competitions and challenges. Campsites will be on a first come first serve basis by date reservation recieved. Please indicate on your reservation your top 3 choices. Rev Page 2 of 7

4 General Information Patrol Awards: There will be separate awards for best performance for each event. Overall award for Top Patrol will be presented based on participation and placement in all sporting and other events. Top Unit Award: Top Unit award will be based on patrol participation (this includes adult leaders) in all challenges along with an average of the patrol competition scores, campsite inspection scores, and participation at the Saturday evening campfire. Bob Walton Spirit Award: This rotating plaque along with a ribbon will be awarded to the Unit exhibiting the most Scout Spirit and functioning best as a Unit. Your Troop does not have to win an event to win this award, but participation in all events is a requirement. Judges will also be assessing your Unit members spirit during all activities. Troops may also be judged by appearance of members at events. (Utility uniforms for events, Field uniforms for campfires and Church Service). Your Troop Scout Spirit must be noticeable, in the participation of your members as well as participation in all events and the campfire. This will be the last award presented after the Sunday morning church service. Skits: Only original skits (or songs) will be allowed at the Saturday evening campfire please, no worn-out, overused skits from 30 years ago. Again, creativity is the key. Be prepared to submit the name of your skit or song and a brief description by Saturday afternoon. As always, skits should be in good taste (a scout is clean) and kept to no more than about 3 minutes in length. Webelos: We welcome Webelos who visit the. While Webelos are invited to visit they will not be able to participate against Boy Scouts in the events or spend the night at the. A parent or guardian must accompany and supervise each Webelos scout attending. Visitors: Visitors are encouraged to attend the competitions and campfire ceremony. Troops should notify them of all applicable rules of Scouting that pertain to litter, smoking, alcohol, etc. Visitors should also be made aware that designated Patrol areas are off-limits to them unless they receive permission from Patrol leaders. Visitors must park in designated parking areas. Parking: Because of congestion in the campsites and surrounding roads, troop trailers and all vehicles, after unloading, must be parked outside the campsite area in the designated parking area(s). Speed limit throughout the area is 5 MPH. Campfires: Troop / Patrol campfires will not be permitted due to limited campsite space for safety reasons. All cooking must be done with contained LP / gas stoves. There will be a campfire area. Leave No Trace: As it should be with all outdoor Scouting events, The Outdoor Code and Leave No Trace principles will be strictly enforced. We will be on private property for this event. Cutting or harvesting live plants / trees is strictly forbidden. If you present items to your troop made from a living plant / tree, bring it to camp do not harvest it from the property. Footwear: Closed-toe shoes are required at all times. No flip-flops, Crocs, or any other footwear that exposes any part of the foot will be allowed. Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms: Smoking at the is discouraged and the use of any tobacco product in front of any Scout is not allowed. Alcohol is forbidden at any Scouting event.
