3 2017 Bitterroot District Klondike Derby February 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th Many years ago, men raced across the Alaskan frozen wilderness by means of dogs and sleds. Scouting has taken this idea and came up with the idea of the Klondike Derby as an activity for Boy Scouts. Each patrol/team builds a sled, collects materials and equipment, and prepares to embark on the Klondike and participate as a patrol/team in the derby. Each patrol/team will act as a separate expedition, following a course to various Alaskan cities. Each patrol/team leader will be handed a sealed envelope with a map and instructions on reaching the "North Pole". Patrol/teams line up at the starting line, and at the sound of the bell open their envelopes to see which city they go to first. At each city they will encounter a situation in which they must use various Scouting skills and sometimes ingenuity to earn gold nuggets. Each city is run by its Mayor, an adult leader, who runs the city and assists the patrol/teams. After a patrol/team completes each event, its tally card is marked by the mayor and they receive their nuggets. In case you re wondering, I m calling them patrol/teams because they should act as a patrol, using the patrol method, but will not necessarily be the patrols they belong to in their troops. Troops will need to divide large patrols [8 or more scouts] into separate patrol/teams. Some troops like to send an older scout with their first-year patrols, in which case the older scout should act as a troop guide, and let the younger scouts do the tasks. Cost: $8 per scout, due at the event, unless you d like to send it in with your registration beforehand. Leaders: Per BSA regulations, each unit must be accompanied by two adult leaders (one of whom must be at least 21 years of age) who are trained as required. Check-In: Units may begin checking in at 4:00 PM, Friday, Feb. 5 th.

4 IMPORTANT Each troop furnishes its own tents, food, wood (there s some on site, but it s good to bring some, too), fire barrel, ash can, water, and equipment. Latrines will be provided. Remember, all policies of the Boy Scouts of America will be followed. Points of emphasis: 1. Please do not bring your pet. I know your dog would never get in a tussle with another dog, nor would it snap at an obnoxious Tenderfoot Scout who is pulling its ears in opposite directions. The problem is, if you re allowed to bring your dog, then I can t very well tell the person with the potentially dangerous animal that he or she can t bring her or his animal. 2. Fires in tents; please do not allow boys to sleep in tents in which there are flames. General Derby Notes Please notify the Klondike Staff of any of your scouts special needs. Every participant must be registered with the Boy Scouts of America. Each troop is responsible for their own Scouts. Each patrol/team should have a patrol/team flag. Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints. It is strongly suggested that the Scout Handbook and Field Book be used as references at the derby. THE SCOUT OATH AND LAW WILL GOVERN ALL PARTICIPANTS AT THE DERBY. Derby regulations are necessary to insure that every Scout and Leader has not only an enjoyable experience, but a safe one as well. The above list is not intended to be complete, but is important and must be agreed upon by the adult and boy leaders of the troop to insure the safety of all present and to show respect to the property owners.
