1 FIRST EVER CANDY MOOSE 2012 CAMPOREE-WEBOREE Boy Scout, Webelos (with parent) Jeff Hanft, Chairman cell This exciting district activity is intended to be a combined Boy Scout, and Webelos Camporee event. (It is not intended to be a Webelos Woods) This event is not an opportunity to earn Webelos Activity Pins. That should be done in the Webelos Dens during Pack activities. 2 Camporee Schedule: GREAT LAKES COUNCIL Friday At Camp Agawam 5:00 pm Arrive, check in, set-up (Please Register at the Pavilion in the Activity Field) 9:00 pm Leaders Meeting Unit Leader & SPL or Den Chief and Denner All adults are invited to the Pavilion for the meeting 11:00 pm Lights Out Quiet Time! Saturday 7:00 am Reveille. Prepare breakfast. Assemble lunch and equipment for the day. Clean up and Pack up. Don t forget your water! 8:00 am Check-in for Webelos Units not camping Friday night (At the Pavilion) 9:15 am Assemble for opening ceremonies and safety meetings Bike Trek attire please 10:00 am Planned Bike Trek departure time from the Chapel Area 12:00 pm Lunch, drink water and rest. Eat where you are on the trail. 12:45 pm Resume the Bike Trek. 3:45 pm Estimated time of arrival at D-Bar-A Camporee Area. Turn in your scavenger hunt items and Set up camp. 4:45 pm Start Dinner and eat when ready. Sunday The following activities can be completed anytime Saturday afternoon upon the patrols arrival at D-Bar-A up until 11:00 pm and then again Sunday morning from 7:00 am until 10:00 am : "Tower of Power", "Camp Cache", "Patrol Cache" 6:15 pm Zombie Costume Judging 6:30-11:00 pm Haunted Forrest (This is a separate optional event being held at the Scout Ranch you are welcome to participate) Advance: $13.00 per person on-line only Walk-in: $ :30 pm Scouts Own Service 8:30 pm Campfire 11:30 pm Camp Lights Out. 7:00 am Reveille. Breakfast and clean up. Pack up. 10:00 am Assembly. Michigan History Final Competition, Prizes, Awards and Flag lowering. 11:00 am Finish packing, and Camp Site inspections, Check-out, and leave.

3 Additional Activities & Awards: Campsites There will be no time for Gateways however, it s important to identify your campsite with unit flags, to ensure the Area Directors give you credit for all your unit s great efforts! Pumpkin Carving Bring a pre-carved Pumpkin or bring one to carve at camp. Points will be awarded to all who have a Jack-O-Lantern in their campsite. Campsite Judging This will be done early Sunday morning. Judging will be based on basic BSA policies related to neatness, cleanliness, and safety. Leave no trace should be practiced. Boy Scout Handbook or the Webelos Handbook should be your guide. Campsite judging will be completed by the Area Directors. Campfire Every unit can prepare a skit, song or story. We may not have time for all to be used. Extra points can be earned for a great performance! Saturday Night s Campfire is a group activity with skits, songs and fellowship for Boy Scouts, future scouts, family and friends. It is open to everyone who wishes to attend and share in the camaraderie. Extra Points Extra points for patrols and dens will be earned by their Patrol, Troop or Pack s scout spirit shown over the entire weekend. Extra points will also be awarded for your unit having every participant in Field Uniform (Class A) at the Camporee/Weboree Closing Ceremony Sunday morning.

4 General Information for Unit Leaders (Packs and Troops): The following information will help you prepare for the upcoming Camporee. After reading this information, if you still have questions or concerns, please contact Jeff Hanft Camporee/Weboree Chairman. Each unit MUST* be ready and able to provide one or two adults *(we may not need all of them depending on how many volunteer ahead of time) to help out on Saturday to man an intersection along the Bike Trek Trail with (2) Arrowmen. If you wish to volunteer to help with this event, please Jeff Hanft before the activity or see Jeff at the Friday Night Leaders Meeting and/or before the Opening Ceremony on Saturday. We need all the help we can get Everyone is welcome to participate. Camporee Locations: This year s event will be held at Camp Agawam located at 1301 W. Clarkston Road, Lake Orion, MI and at the D-BAR-A Scout Ranch located at 880 E. Sutton Road, Metamora, MI (810) We will be camping camporee style both Friday and Saturday nights. We will be camping in the activity field at Camp Agawam and in the Camporee Area at D-Bar-A located in the north-east side of the ranch. Follow Primrose Lane and take the first left past the Elliott Family Camp. Please refer to the included maps. Check-In: On Friday night October 19 th all unit Troop leaders/webelos leaders (Adults) must check-in at the Pavilion at the Registrar s table before setting up your campsite. All campsites will be assigned on a first come basis. Please bring (3) copies of your unit roster attending the Camporee (This is very important) Please list all scouts and adults. We will keep one and provide the others to Camp Agawam and D-BAR-A staff. It will not be necessary to check in at the main Scout Ranch office upon arrival. Camp Set-Up (All units will be camping in the field in their designated sites.) Campsites will be inspected and judged for awards. All campsites should be set-up in a manner appropriate to Boy Scout set-up. If possible, tents should be uniform or at least pitched uniformly. Fire safety rules must be adhered to for above ground fires. If your unit will be using an ax or saw, you must have a visible axe yard. Only Troop Leaders, Boy Scouts and Adult helpers are allowed in the axe yard. Kitchen areas should be clean and neat. Food must be stored properly. There should be a posted menu and duty roster in each troop/patrol/den site.

5 General Event Knowledge -Make sure your Boy Scouts / Webelos plan and prepare for the weather. Field Uniforms on boys and leaders earn extra points at the closing ceremony. -Bring your Troop Flag, Pack, and Patrol / Den Flags. -Tent buddies, or Sleeping arrangements should be assigned before you leave for the trip. -Bike Trek buddies should be assigned ahead of time. -First Aid stations will be clearly marked. Make sure you report all injuries to the First Aid station at once. -Taps are at 10:30 and Quiet Time and lights out is at 11:00 pm on Friday night and 11:30 pm on Saturday night. -No PETS at this event. Dutch Oven Cooking With Dutch Oven cooking and above ground fires, there will be coals. All ashes, etc. must be thoroughly extinguished before disposal to avoid the possibility of a camp fire! Competition and Trails This weekend is a competition to see how well the Boy Scouts in your unit and the Webelos in your unit can work together to accomplish a goal. Their knowledge, skill and determination as a team will be put to the test. Most boys of all ages love competition; a lot actually thrive on it. Leaders need to prepare the boys on how to follow natural leaders according to their abilities (i.e. top knot tiers, fastest runners, most knowledge about first aid, and etc.). Scouts and Webelos will be divided up into GPS units (Group Patrol of Scouts) of (10) Scouts or less! If there are 11 in your group you will form two groups of 5 and 6. These "GPS" units will work together on the trail and in the camps on the activities. They will be scored on some of the activities and others will be for fun and prizes. The intention of the competition is to encourage teamwork, scout spirit and to have the boys strive to DO YOUR BEST and BE PREPARED. Competition provides opportunity to improve their skills and to improve their teamwork. The top GPS unit will receive the 2012 Candy Moose grand prize at the Sunday morning closing ceremony. Note: All Scouts and Webelos must be split up into GPS Units NO Larger than 10 boys! Webelos are encouraged to join a GPS Unit with Boy Scouts.

6 Trail Activities, Geo-less Geo-Cache Rules and Other Hike Day Information General Bike Trek Hike Day Safety Information: -Scouts need to use the Buddy System while on the Bike Trek. Do not loose your buddy, wait for a tired buddy, help a tired buddy...patrol leaders need to make sure all members of his GPS unit is at each check point. -Scouts Be Prepared Water Food Outdoor Essentials Fire (matches get wet) Flint & Steel doesn t -Except for the Bike Trek and the Haunted Forrest, scouts must remain within the camporee area boundary at all times. This boundary is described as: -North Boundary: Sutton Road -South Boundary: Flint River -East Boundary: Wilder Road -West Boundary: Flint River Cache Game Rules and Information: -Scouts will work to find the Caches with their buddy. -Scouts will get the Cache Map and Clues Saturday morning at Morning Colors. -Caches do not count towards the 2012 Candy Moose Trophy (There are separate prizes for found Caches) -Each Cache has at least ten tokens -A Buddy Team at a Cache can remove only one token. -Only one token per scout can be taken on the entire hike (you can still look and find the caches just don t take a token). You can help other scouts find the caches. -Please Re-Hide the cache as you found it. -If the cache is empty, you still need to Re-Hide it. -Found tokens can be exchanged for prizes at Sunday morning colors all scouts who find a token will get a prize random order Candy Moose Trophy: -Scouts work towards the trophy as a GPS unit (Troop or a Patrol of not more than ten scouts) (the more GPS units in a large Troop the better your chance to win the 2012 Candy Moose Trophy). -At Saturday morning colors you will declare your GPS units and be scored as such Note: Once you make your choice you can not change during the competition or rearrange your rosters. -Contest One - During the Bike Trek...scavenger hunt -Contest Two - Michigan History Quiz Sheet -Contest Three Tower of Power during free time at Camp (Saturday or Sunday) -Contest Four Jack-O-Lantern participation Candy Moose Spirit Stick: To be given to a very spirited troop Sunday morning!

7 Camp Rules 1. All Scouts and leaders must act in accordance with the Scout Oath and Law at all times. 2. All rules in the Guide to Safe Scouting must be adhered to at all times. 3. Scouts must use the buddy system at all times they are outside of their campsite and on the trail. 4. The unit leader must administer all medications. 5. All injuries must be reported to the health officer, so he/she may log them in. Minor injuries may be handled by the unit and reported later. 6. The health officer must be notified of all serious injuries and illnesses immediately. 7. The health officer must be made aware of any Scout or adult with a medical condition that may need treatment. This will allow the health officer to have an idea of any potential medical emergencies. This information will be kept strictly confidential and will be provided to the EMS, if an emergency should arise. 8. Shoes/boots must be worn at all times outside of tents. 9. Remember, no flames are allowed in tents. This includes propane lanterns, heaters, etc. 10. Climbing of trees is prohibited. Leave all live trees alone. 11. Lights out means quiet (youth and adults). 12. Use of offensive language is prohibited. 13. Each unit must maintain two deep leadership at all times. 14. No ground campfires, but above ground campfires are permissible. Down, dead and detached wood can be found in the woods for your fire. The staff may suspend all open fires based on safety concerns or weather conditions. Departure and Checkout Departure will take place after closing ceremonies and once your area director has inspected your campsite. Remember Scouts always leave the area the same or in better condition than they found it. Leave no trace. That means no visible trash, no damage to the environment. All trash must be carried out of the Camporee site and home with the unit. Once the area director gives you your departure pass you can leave. Have a safe trip home!
