2 Sakima District 2017 Fall Camporee Information Guide Registration Units must pre-register for the Camporee by turning on-line ( or at the event. The cost is $12.00 per person (both adult and youth). Final payment is due Friday January 15, The registration fee covers the cost of patches, prizes, awards, facilities, and program materials. 4 Check-in Check out Check-in will begin at 4:30 on Friday evening at Camporee Headquarters. Only the unit leader and the SPL should come to the headquarters for check-in. Each Troop will receive their campsite assignments at check-in. Check-out will be on Sunday morning following the closing award ceremony and Flags. Campsites will need to be policed by the unit before check-out. Please remember that as scouting units we have a responsibility to leave the camp in better shape than when we arrived. Troop Camping All troops will be camping in Recreation Field as shown on the map. Troops will park trailers along the parking lot on the east side of camping area. Due to the small area, dining fly s will be set up next to the trailers on the lot. Please plan to use weights to hold down the fly without using stakes into the lot. Troop assignments in the youth area will be handled at check-in. Location of campfires is still being determined as the weather is monitored. Scout Spirit Show your colors! Each Patrol should carry their flag with them and fly it proudly during the event. Flags All Scout units should display their flags during daylight hours. The American flag will be flown at the Main Flag pole with both raising and closing per the schedule. Patrols should carry their own flags during the competition events and Flags. Uniforms All Scouts and leaders must wear Class A uniforms for all morning and evening flags, Saturday Dinner and Sunday morning s Scout s Own. Activity uniforms are permitted for the competition events and the rest of the time as per your unit uniform policy on campouts. General Campsite All campsites will need to be set up in a neat manner and kept in an orderly fashion, free of litter for the duration of the camporee. No vehicle will be allowed in the campsite with the exception of the unit trailer. Vehicles can come back Friday evening and Sunday morning during set-up and tear down times, but should remain in the parking lot the rest of the time. Lead from the Front & Green Bar Awards During the Camporee, the Senior Patrol Leader (or designated SPL for the event) of each troop will be eligible to receive the Lead from the Front award of the Camporee for their leadership to the troop, being positive example to the boys, and their adherence to the ideals of Scouting. The Patrol Leaders will compete for similar award called the Green Bar award. Both the SPL s and PL s will be issued a bandana (or something similar) to be worn visible at all times. Unit leaders will determine the most worthy candidate at their Saturday evening meeting. More details will be discussed at the Friday evening meetings S a k i m a F a l l C a m p o r e e P a g e 4

5 The Campout Events The theme of this event is Highland Games based on what was played in Scotland in the Middle Ages. As part of the theme, we are camping in the parade field as they would have in in the Scottish Highlands. The morning events are individual competitions broken down by age groups , 13-15, and brackets. These events will include: Hammer Throw, Caber Toss, Javelin Throw, Stone Put, and an Obstacle Course. The afternoon events will be team (troop/patrol) that will include an A-Frame Build and Walk, Tug of War and Siege Warfare. The A-Frame will require lashing skills to successfully build and carry a person on the frame. Ropes and Staves are PROVIDED. The Siege Warfare event will Scouts using catapults to bring down the castle walls. No hand to hand combat if you were wondering. Winners of all events will be summed together to determine overall camporee winner. Exact determination will of how they will be considered is not defined until we know attendance and age groupings participating. Saturday Lunch Boy Scouts do their own cooking by the patrol method just as they would on normal campouts with the exception of Saturday Lunch. We are having a community meal in the Dining Hall. Scouts and Scouters are asked to each bring (1) can of chicken soup and drop off at the Senior Patrol Leader Meeting on Friday. Cans not used will be donated to a local Madison County Food Bank. Dutch Oven Cook-Off Beginning at Winter 2016 Camporee, a traveling trophy is awarded to the troop with the best Dutch Oven dessert at a Camporee. As in the last camporees, we will be judging in the Dining Hall at Saturday Dinner. Troops should bring the dish (or dishes) to the dining hall for judging. Troops are welcome to use the dining hall for their as well. Entries can be prepared at their campsite, but PLEASE plan to cook them in the gravel area near the dining hall. Entries can be a desert or entrée or both. Show off your best! Judges will review every entry for taste, originality, and overall presentation. One person in the troop should be prepared to explain the entry and what went into the choice. Please remember as part of your presentation to bring a trivet to place the hot oven upon (not to burn the tables) and plates/forks for the judges. Hopefully by having everyone in one location will speed up the process. The winner will be announced Sunday Morning and take home the traveling trophy to adorn to mark their victory. Leave No Trace It is imperative that all units practice LNT principles so that we minimize any impact on the camp. Remember low impact camping techniques. Tent ditching or trenching is not allowed. Sanitary Facilities A SCOUT IS CLEAN. Portable and stationary restrooms are available. Use them as they are intended. Do not use trees and do not dig latrines in your campsite. Please keep these facilities clean, as several people in the course of the weekend will use them. Trash and Garbage Please bring sealable garbage bags for disposal of your trash and garbage. 6 Open Fires Fires will be permitted in the designated fire pits only unless otherwise notified. Unit Fireguard sheets must be filled out and posted. They must be under the supervision of an adult at all times. Each unit must follow all fire safety rules and are responsible for providing their own safety equipment (water buckets, shovels, etc.). Saws and Axes Boy Scouts may use saws and axes only if an ax yard is set up and marked off by the Troop. The ax yard must be set in a safe manner with tools stored properly, safety equipment available, and all BSA safety standards followed. Taps A SCOUT IS COURTEOUS. After taps every Scout is expected to be in his tent and quiet at that time. If you must move about in your own area after taps, PLEASE do it quietly so that others are not disturbed. Roaming about the campgrounds or other campsites will not be tolerated. Scout s Own A SCOUT IS REVERENT. We will have a non-denominational Scout s Own for all Scouts and Leaders on Sunday morning (See Schedule). Each Troop will be asked to provide a Chaplin s Aide to help with the service. The Chaplin s Aide must attend a meeting Friday night to prepare for this service. We request everyone to attend this function as no other activities will be planned or allowed during this time. NO VEHICLES WILL BE LOADED OR MOVED DURING THE SCOUT S OWN. Personal Equipment Checklist BE PREPARED. The equipment needed for a good Camporee experience is the same as that which is needed for a normal campout. The Boy Scout Handbook has a simplified list of minimum equipment. Do not forget the 10 essentials. You WILL need them. Lost and Found A SCOUT IS TRUSTWORTHY. There will be a lost and found area at Camporee headquarters. If belongings are properly marked they are more easily returned. Forbidden Items As with any Scout Outing, and for reasons of courtesy and safety, these items are forbidden for youth from the Camporee. Cell Phones, electronic games, radios, MP3 players, etc. are not be used during Camporee Events. Cameras always welcome! Compasses and not GPS should be used.
