January 26-28, 2018 Camp Chief Logan (Boy Scout Camp) Chapmanville, West Virginia Cost: $8.00 per person, includes patch All volunteers are greatly appreciated! We would prefer for you to pre-register prior to coming!! 2 Check-In Check-in is 5:00pm to 9:00pm at Dining Hall (Camp Headquarters) on Friday evening Parking After registration, vehicles may drop off Scouts and their gear, then park in the approved parking area. No vehicles may in the camping area except to load and unload before and after camping. Handicap parking permitted for medical conditions. Unit trailers are allowed at camp. Camping You will need to bring your own camping equipment; you will receive your camping area assignment when you check-in. Campers are responsible for their own meals and campsite clean-up. Camp safety and adherence to BSA policy found in Guide to Safe Scouting Campfires are permitted in fire rings. A campfire must be monitored at all times by adult until the last embers are out. No pets are permitted on camp property during the duration of the event unless the animal is a service animal. Firearms and fireworks are not allowed in camp. Alcoholic beverages and illegal substances are never permitted on camp property. Offenders will be asked to leave the property. Secure and store foods to prevent little furry friends. No swimming allowed in lakes or pools. Please utilize the Buddy System. Leaving Camp During Event If an attendee has to leave camp for any reason, they must sign out at Camp Headquarters. Upon returning, they need to sign back in. Safety requires that administration knows who is present at all times. Check-Out Procedure Pack up all of your gear Bag all your trash

3 WHAT IS THE KLONDIKE DERBY? In search of gold, the men of Alaska raced across the frozen tundra on sleds pulled by dog teams. Scouts will participate as a patrol, running an expedition to simulated towns and solving practical problems using basic Scouting skills. Dress Code Plan for the weather accordingly. Scouts will need to dress for an outdoor winter activity. Good outdoor clothing, such as warm coats, hats, gloves, long johns (thermal underwear), multiple pairs of socks, waterproof boots, rain gear (if necessary), etc. should be worn. Be prepared for the cold! Dress in layers, keeping in mind those layers can be removed or added. Scouts will not be allowed to participate in sneakers or improper clothing. Sled Guidelines Each Troop/Patrol needs to have a sled in order to compete. No exceptions. The sled that is inspected must be the same one used for competing in the event. Sleds must be made primarily of wood. Sled/Equipment/Safety Check Each Troop/Patrol is to have their sled prepared for an equipment check (see list below for required equipment). It is suggested that the tarp be used to secure most of the equipment in the sled. The sled must be built prior to inspection and must contain all gear on the equipment list in order for the maximum gold nuggets to be awarded. A box may be used to the hold the equipment or small tote. 4 Sled Guidelines *IMPORTANT PLEASE READ* This year bring your sleds any way you have them. In the past we have lashed them but this year they can be built in any way. We will have different judging for the sleds on the build design and that will be discussed at the leaders meeting. EVENTS First Aid Troops/Patrols will need to answer the following questions: 1) explain what Hypothermia and Dehydration are and describe their symptoms, 2) explain how to perform basic CPR, 3) explain how to stop bleeding and 4) explain the treatment for shock. Troops/Patrols need to provide a First Aid Kit. Build a Survival Shelter Troops/Patrols must construct an emergency shelter using only the items they have on their sled. They must work together to 1) locate a suitable location, 2) make use of tripod lashings and square lashings in the construction of the shelter and 3) erect the shelter and transform their Klondike Sled into a winter storm shelter for three (3) people. Water Rescue Troops/Patrols will 1) demonstrate how to form a human chain and pull a victim to safety from a river and 2) demonstrate an un-weighted rope rescue. Once rescued you find that the victim also has a twisted ankle and a possible broken arm and will need to be transported. Troops/Patrols will need a 20 foot length of rope, padding for splints, triangular bandage (neckerchief) and a blanket with two poles to make a stretcher. String Burn/ Pancake flip Troops/Patrols must construct a fire and burn a string at a set height. Then after the string is burnt you may add more to your fire to flip a pancake over a string at a set height as well. Unit must provide their own frying pan for cooking the pancake. Knots Picking a knot card at random, troops/patrols will demonstrate the tying of six (6) knots: Square, Clove Hitch, 2 Half Hitches, Bowline, Taut-line Hitch and Timber Hitch (the timber hitch will need to be tied to a log and dragged 20 feet without loosening). Troops/Patrols will provide the ropes used in this event.

5 TIMED EVENTS AFTER LUNCH (These events will be at a central area) Sled Race At least 6-8 scouts are required for the race: 4-6 pullers, 1 passenger and 1 pusher. A Troop/Patrol will complete the sled race when the sled crosses the finish line. This event will challenge your Scout s physical endurance, teamwork and Scout skills. For this event you will need a sled capable of transporting one of your Patrol members plus a blanket and 20 feet of ½ or ¾ inch rope. Log Saw Staying warm in arctic weather is one of your biggest challenges. Troops/Patrols must saw through a log against the clock. They may keep the chunk they saw off. *Totin Chip & Firem n Chit cards will need to be carried at all times* Chili Cook-Off Bring your best chili recipe for our contest Saturday evening. Chili must be made at the campsite, no limitations on type but please be easy on the heat for our judges. Your bowl entry must be enough for 3 judges to sample. Closing Campfire We will be presenting awards at Saturday s evening campfire, please have your troop/patrol bring a skit. Depending on weather, we may have the closing in the Dining Hall. For Volunteers Each unit will need to select at least one adult to be a volunteer but we will take more! Volunteers will be Town Mayors, assist in setting up towns before events, time keepers, help with refreshments, and other duties. Assignments and a list of their duties will be given to them at the SPL/Leaders Meeting on Friday night.
