2 Hello and welcome! Thank you for your interest in leaving not a trace and attending Maketewa District s 2015 Klondike Derby. The event will be hosted by Troop 150, for their twelfth year. We hope that your unit has a great time as we aim to test your leave no trace skills and knowledge. This year s theme will be centered on the principles of leave no trace where the scouts will learn and demonstrate what they have learned in order to complete the requirements for the Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award. There are some pre-requisites to be completed ahead of time to complete the Awareness Award at the conclusion of this event to be listed further in this guide The Seven Principles of Leave No Trace Plan Ahead and Prepare Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces Dispose of Waste Properly Leave What You Find Minimize Campfire Impacts Respect Wildlife Be Considerate of Other Visitors The Outdoor Code As an American, I will do my best to Be clean in my outdoor manners, Be careful with fire, Be considerate in the outdoors, And Be conservation minded. The Klondike Derby is loosely based on the Iditarod dog sled race held annually in Alaska. In the Iditarod, mushers drive their team of dogs to pull their sledges over a 1,150 mile trail from Anchorage to Nome. At the Klondike Derby, the Patrol Leader uses patrol members to pull the sledge around a one-mile trail to get to the event sites.

Zion exit (exit #178). Turn right onto KY 536. Continue to KY 536 for approximately 6.3 miles to the camp entrance on the right. From South I-75 Follow I-75 south to the KY 536/Mt. 4 SLEDGES A sledge is a strong, heavy sled. The boys will be pulling and pushing them. They need to be strong and lightweight. It will also be used to carry equipment including patrol and personal gear. The sledge can be made out of a variety of materials or one material but it must be strong. Be creative. If it can be pulled and can transport gear, all is good. To help you with some design ideas, check out this web site with links to 21 different designs: If you need skis for your sledge, check with Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg, IN. In the past they have donated used skis to Boy Scout Troops for this purpose. Just let them know who you are and why you need the skis. Please remember, its BOY Scouts. The boys should build the sledge, with appropriate adult supervision, of course. Have fun and be safe! IMPORTANT MESSAGE As leaders, it is extremely important to make sure your Scouts are prepared for the weather. Our troop has a saying: If you re wet, you re cold; if you re dry, you re warm. It is inevitable that they are going to sweat during the course of the weekend. Please make sure that your troop knows cold weather camping safety, has proper sleeping gear, and that they layer properly to ensure a safe and enjoyable weekend!

5 Outdoor Ethics Awareness Award Requirements Cub Scouts 1. Describe what the Outdoor Code means to you. 2. Complete the Leave No Trace online youth course for your age group at Print the certificate. 3. Complete the Tread Lightly! Kid's Outdoor Quiz at Print the certificate. 4. Participate in an outdoor ethics activity facilitated by a person who has completed the BSA outdoor ethics orientation course or is a BSA outdoor ethics trainer or master. Cub Scouts earn this award by working with their families to complete these activities. Prerequisites to Klondike Derby Complete items 1, 2, and 3. For #1 a handwritten response is required. For #2 and #3, bring copies of certificates Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers, Sea Scouts and Scouting Adults 1. Recite from memory and explain the meaning of the Outdoor Code. 2. Watch the National Park Service (NPS) Leave No Trace Program at 3. Complete the Leave No Trace on-line youth course for your age group at Print the certificate. 4. Earn the Tread Lightly! online course certificate at 5. Participate in an outdoor ethics course, workshop or training activity facilitated by a person who has completed the BSA outdoor ethics orientation course or is a BSA outdoor ethics trainer or master. 6 EVENT RULES 1. Troops need to bring an adequate supply of water. The outdoor water spigots will be on but they do have the potential to freeze. Plan according to the weather. 2. ABSOLUTELY NO GROUND FIRES! Please use a ground shield or fire barrel. Thank you! 3. No firewood may be brought into camp. This is a DBC rule. A supply of firewood will be available. 4. No generators, kerosene heaters, potbellied stoves, etc 5. Gunpowder creek is OFF LIMITS. Violators will be sent home. No questions, no exceptions! 6. No vehicles in campsites except to load and unload gear. Troop trailers are permitted. 7. Maximum 1 vehicle at a time per campsite. Please return to the parking lot after unloading. 8. Campsites will be 1 st come, 1 st served. Please respect any roped off areas, subject to weather conditions. The fields off the left end of the drive will be the primary camping area. 9. BSA liquid and fuel gas policies must be adhered to at all times. 10. No open flames are permitted in tents. 11. Every patrol/webelos den must have a sledge to participate. 12. Each patrol/webelos sledge will be inspected for the items on the equipment list. 13. All Scouts must be properly dressed for the weather. Each Scout will be required to have boots, gloves, and a hat/hood (appropriate to the weather) to participate in the events. 14. Adults are encouraged to accompany patrols along the trail but are discouraged from assisting. 15. Let the Mayor of each event know if you have Webelos in your patrol. 16. Please stay on the marked trail at all times between each event. 17. There will be a 45-minute time limit for each event. 18. The Mayor s decision is final at each event. 19. No littering. Let s leave camp cleaner than when you got here. 20. Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!! The Klondike 2015 committee has the right to add/amend as deemed necessary

8 Equipment List Equipment listed below is in addition to your standard winter camping gear. On Your Person + Scout Spirit + Patrol Spirit + Boots on the feet of each patrol member (Old sneakers do NOT count as boots!!!) + Hat and gloves for each patrol member + Suitable outdoor clothing for each patrol member (stay warm & dry!) +++The required clothing is for your safety and comfort+++ On The Sledge + The Sledge itself (of course). Must have a pull rope handle for each patrol member. Gear must be contained without falling out/off. Be sure to include Troop number and Patrol name. + PATROL FLAG!!! + The ten Scout essentials per the Scout Handbook + BSA Scout Handbook (in plastic bag) OR Webelos Handbook + Patrol first aid kit as per the Boy Scout Handbook + 1 Garbage Bag + 1 plastic coffee mug per scout (with handle and beaner suggested) ADULTS INCLUDED!!! + One (1) quart of water for each patrol member (minimum) + One 1-gallon zip-top bag to hold the map you will be given. + Pencils for each patrol member + Notebook paper + Compass + Totin Chip OR Whittling Chip card(s) + Some means of suspending your sledge from a pulley + Three (3) 50-foot pieces of ¼ rope + Bandana for each patrol member + Pancake mix and something to mix it in and with + Kindling and other wood needed to build a fire + Backpacking stove and fuel, according to BSA policy + 1 backpack, geared for a 3-5 day backpacking trip, no food necessary for this.
