4 Background St Michael s Convent has been the home of the Community of the Sisters of the Church and in their ownership since Due to the changing requirements of the Sisters over the years, the existing facilities are no longer suitable. Accordingly, a decision has been taken to relocate and a property has been purchased which, after refurbishment, will meet the future needs of the Community. Opportunity St Michael s Convent is located within an affluent location to the north of Ham Common and is set in extensive mature grounds extending to 1.55 hectares (3.83 acres). We are inviting proposals from parties for the purchase of St Michael s Convent. 6 Description St Micheal s Convent comprises an impressive Grade II Listed, extended, former residential dwelling which commands a prominent position overlooking the historic Ham Common. The original part of the property latterly known as Orford Hall dates back to 1730 when it was built for a Mr William Genew. The property changed hands many times before becoming the home of the Sisters of the Church in The original part of the building is constructed of brown brick with red brick dressing with timber sash windows and a pitched slate roof. The property has been extended many times over its life with the most recent additions coming in the form of the east and west wings in All later additions are sympathetic and of similar style to the original building. Internally the original part of the building maintains many of its period features including two main reception rooms and the principle, Queen Anne, staircase with finely turned balustrades and panelling. St Michael s also benefits from a coach house situated to the south east corner of the property which has been converted, in part, to residential accommodation. The property sits in approximately 3.83 acres (1.55 hectares) of beautiful mature gardens including an original 18th century walled garden and vine house, an extensive orchard and formal garden area laid to lawn with a scattering of small trees. The Common itself is approximately 20 acres and hosts an annual village fair and the Petersham Cricket Club most weekends of the season. Ham Common is well situated for the commuter, with nearby Richmond station providing a main line train service to London Waterloo (from 17 minutes) as well as the District Line underground to Victoria and The City. The A316/M3 and the M4 motorways are approximately one and a half and four miles distance respectively providing good road communications both to central London, and the south and west of England. The local area boasts some of the finest state and independent schools in the country including King s House School for Boys, St Katherine s Independent Girl s School, Lady Eleanor Holles School, Newland House and Twickenham Preparatory School.
