SPA CITY SAMS (A big thank you to Virlene Claire for standing in as secretary and documenting all the activities and taking minutes while Dmoug and I have been out playing.) Our June, 2013, campout was held at Maumelle Park in Little Rock, AR. On Sunday evening we just sat on the bank overlooking the river and visited. The Rally was one of the best, rained a lot but did not melt, a little cool but not uncomfortable. We d never been to Syracuse so it was quite an experience. The traffic was a little more congested than Hot Springs. :) While at the Rally, we got to work the "Chapter and You" desk. We met many Good Sam people and got to talk about what a Chapter is and how to form a Chapter. We even got to have our picture made with Reba M. and Wayne N.!!! After the Rally we had a couple of days to visit the "Big Apple". Everyone should have this experience at least once. Five couples stayed together all through the hustle and bustle of New York City. Ever lasting memories! We bought part of the roads going down South toward Delaware for the Mid Atlantic Samboree which was 4 states: Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and Maryland. (Toll Roads are a little tough when driving a motor home). The work of 4 states pulling together was quite different. It was worth it though; we learned a new game or two for our Samboree. We had the privilige to promote and give out several registrations. After leaving the East Coast, we, Doug & Helen Tinkle, Diane Mulkins, KY State Director and her grandson Mitch, and Joe & Mary San Marco from LA, headed for Hershey, PA and had 4 days to explore the most beautiful Dutch/Amish country. It was an awesome trip. Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate! Bill was in hog heaven. Monday meant a trip to Camping World in N Little Rock and then lunch at BJ s Market Café. They saw Governor Beebe eating there. The ladies enjoyed the day at the park. In the evening we had a wonderful salad and dessert supper. Joan Rogers (Shirley Jones daughter) from Mountain View joined us just for the afternoon. After we ate, we set up a theater outside and watched a DVD entitled Off The Main Road by comedian Carl Hurley. Tuesday we went to the Witt Stephens Jr. Central Arkansas Nature Center. We walked through the Farmers Market and had lunch in the River Market. Then off to The Old Mill at T.R. Pugh Memorial Park in N Little Rock. Our leader made a few wrong turns along the way and the followers turned also, even though they knew it was wrong. But we found the place we wanted to go as well as our way back to the park. Wednesday Ron Bugg was out early trying to herd the geese off from around the campers. They didn t want to obey him. Some of the men walked the new bridge. Then they went out shopping at some of the sporting stores and ate lunch at Golden Corral. Some of the ladies went shopping and ate lunch at Applebee s. Some stayed at the park and then on to Burger King for lunch. In the afternoon, Bill and Trish Rough treated us with Root Beer floats. Thank you Bill & Trish. It was a great treat. Thursday we had a delicious breakfast and afterwards we had our monthly meeting. In the meeting Don Dale told us about the following: FREE issues of Camping World magazines (see above). In the evening we again set up a theater outside and some of us watched a DVD by Terry Fator Live from Las Vegas. He is a celebrity, impressionist, singer, comedian, and ventriloquist. Thank you Ron & Sue Bugg for furnishing the DVD s and Billy & Shirley Jones for the use of their TV. Friday everyone left for home. It was another great campout! Up Coming Events: There were not a lot of changes made from Headquarters at this Rally. Yea!!! When we get back our plans are to visit many Chapter campouts. We re looking forward to seeing you all again. Plans are going strong for our April Samboree. Enthusiasm is up, ideas are flowing. Until next time, may God bless and keep you. 3 All Chapter Presidents and Assistant State Directors: Paulette s Palette Our new phone numbers: Paulette Arnie We had our best Friendship Campout yet!!! Our members of Area 1 are the greatest, and we especially want everyone to know how much we appreciate the help, donations, hospitality, and friendship that Arnie and I hold very dear. Even though we get to see some members only this one time per year, we count you as close family. We played a new (for us) game of Urban Golf during the Friendship. There were about 10 who were willing to trust me when I said it would be a blast?? You lay out 9 or 10 holes but they are wacky. Trash cans, trees, under an object or through a gap are the flagged holes, and you get to decide if you ve come close enough. Sounds like a piece of cake, right? NOT. Your ball is a tennis ball and your club is a driver. And, tennis balls have a mind of their own although I m sure with practice you might become fairly good at it!! You might want to practice up for next year. The Friendship ended on June 2; we arrived in northern IA on June 5. They were anxiously? awaiting our arrival as the season had already started. This is a new thing for this campground to have a host on site. Yes, we do clean bathrooms but someone has to do it, right!! Anyway, there are events going on each weekend until mid-september not to mention the car races every Friday night. Back to this newsletter, it s really fun to get pictures from your chapter showing the good times you re having at campouts, new parks, etc. Keep them coming. It s also a good place to share Good Sam information that you think might not get to everyone otherwise. There are 2 good examples of this in this issue: Four free issues of a Camping World magazine and information about each chapter s volunteer hours. For the August & September 2013 issues please address your articles to me at General Delivery, Britt, IA or write your article as the body of an and send it to me at redhead.smith2002@gmail.com. Deadline each month is the 25th. Paulette Please forward this to your Secretaries: A question was asked: When does my volunteer time start? When you leave home going to your volunteer job until you return home. All this time plus mileage is counted. Another question: When I volunteer at Samborees, does my time count? Yes (but not mileage to Samborees). Another question : Do we need two people to do a volunteer job? Answer is NO. One person or a dozen is legal. The old rule was two or more but that has been changed. Please have your Chapter Secretaries keep a monthly record of their volunteer hours/money/mileage. This should be from Jan thru Dec Please have them to your ASD by Jan. 15, 2014 (please do not send these to your ASD monthly). He/She, will then send to us, and we will make a tally for the State. Remember, every hour counts!!!! Please do not hesitate to ask questions, there s no such thing as a "dumb" question. Have a great day, Bill & Dee Nery GOOD SAM MALLARDS The Mallards discovered summer early at our June campout, which was held at Village Creek State Park near Wynne. We had 7 rigs, with all but one family present. Our hosts, Sherry and Joe Hoffpauir, kept us well fed with homemade peach ice cream and cake Thursday, a great chicken spaghetti pot luck Friday evening, lunch of spaghetti and more fresh ice cream on Saturday, with Sunday breakfast rolls and coffee along with a very nice devotional from Joe. Saturday evening we went out to eat at Mike s Restaurant in nearby Colt. This chapter s members LIKE to eat! Chapter members were involved in many activities all weekend: Most of the time there was a game of Sequence or Hand and Foot going. Many of us had a guided tour of Pat Havlik s new Mini-Winnie motor home. Great to have you back, Pat! Danny Hutchison had success fishing two evenings from his boat, while Dave Murray had worse luck bank fishing. He caught a couple bream, but a whole lot of chigger bites. Pat Havlik and Lenora Murray also found some unwelcome chiggers. A few members went shopping in Forrest City. And, we all enjoyed the wildlife sightings. Martha and William Hosto win for sighting the most deer: 1 Fri. morning, 1 Saturday, and Sunday a mother and 2 fawns. After a great potluck Friday evening, President Danny Hutchison called our business meeting to order, with an opening prayer from Martha Hosto. Treasurer Sherry Hoffpauir reported. We sang Happy Birthday to Sherry Hoffpauir. Danny read a thank you card from the Holy Rosary School for our contribution in memory of Mike Havlik. The Standard Operating Procedures will be forwarded to the State Director for final approval this month. We elected Shirley Blackwell as our Vice-President for the remainder of 2013 by a unanimous vote. Lenora asked about service hours and will report the results to the Arkansas State Director. Martha Hosto brought two big jars full of pull tabs which Tommy Blackwell will take to Ronald McDonald House. A big thank you goes out to Sharon Rush and Joseph Mack for saving up so many tabs! Martha Hosto moved and Shirley Blackwell seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting. THANKS AGAIN to the HOFFPAUIRS for a great weekend. Pat Havlik will host the July campout at Willow Beach Campground July Bring something to go with her great hamburgers (she ll bring buns too). Respectfully submitted, Lenora Murray Page 3 Arkansam News 2013

4 THUNDERING SAMS After having a large turn-out for the Spring Samboree and the Area Four Friendship Campout, the group camping at Bull Shoals in June seemed small. The majority of our chapter members were traveling or camp hosting. Six rigs made the trip and had a lot of fun visiting. We did some flea market shopping, took an evening group tour of the lake on a pontoon boat, had a pot-luck and a weinie roast. We also visited Gaston's Resort. What we did best was eat LOTS of ice cream (every day). Instead of our traditional "black shirt" (our "uniforms") group dinner we chose to have a group breakfast at the Village Wheet Restaurant. Yum. We were all stuffed with biscuits and gravy, eggs cooked to perfection, home fried 'taters, fluffy pancakes as large as our plates, homemade cinnamon rolls, and grits. We may have had a small turn out but we had a great time. DERRICK CITY GOOD SAM We held our June meeting at the Wooly Hollow State Park on June We had 10 rigs present and enjoyed beautiful weather on beautiful Lake Bennett. Monday we enjoyed visiting with JR and Louise Todd. Tuesday afternoon was our potluck with Lawrence & JD Henley joining us after driving in from Petit Jean. We also enjoyed homemade ice cream, thanks to Sharon and Randy putting that together. Wednesday afternoon everyone enjoyed hamburgers and fixings. We also enjoyed visiting with BoBo and Eleanor Holly on Wednesday. Thursday morning everyone enjoyed biscuits and gravy. Thursday night was Roper s restaurant where we all had a good time, after which we had our regular meeting so many could get an early start Friday morning. Thanks so much for the Gibbons and Taweels stepping up to host! Our next campout will be at Toad Suck (July 15 19) with Talleys and Dixons hosting. Hope to see everyone there. 5 Happy moments, praise God. Difficult moments, seek God. Quiet moments, worship God. Painful moments, trust God. Every moment, thank God. ARKANSAS VETERANS CHAPTER I apologize for having to postpone the last meeting, and I know that some were not able to attend it. For those who would like to send in their dues, please send them to: Lawrence Henley, P O Box 5063, Jacksonville, AR We now have a seamstress in Arkansas One who will make vests for members of the new AR Veterans Chapter. She is in the process of obtaining fabric and other items needed. When a price has been set, she will let chapter members know. She will also need each member s size when the vest is ordered. I am looking forward to seeing you next spring. Jerry Webb, President Page 5 Arkansam News 2013

6 BELLE POINT SAMS On June 11, 2013 three rigs caravanned to Old Post Road Recreation Park in Russellville, Arkansas and met up with 5 other rigs. Arnie led the caravanner s on an adventure through a very nice subdivision where we all got to practice our backing up skills. John Martin with the help of a Magellan RV GPS led then and would have driven directly to the park but due to poor signage ended up at the ball park next door and had to do a turn around and come back to the park entrance. Pretty much everyone that came had some problems primarily due to poor signage. Tuesday afternoon, the chapter provided hot dogs for the meal after the meeting and everyone brought sides. Don Jones was the Grill Master and did an excellent job. Wednesday morning, the chapter provided Sausage, Syrup & Butter and Ann Martin provided the pancake batter for a pancake breakfast. Don Jones and John Martin were the Grill Masters this time. Wednesday afternoon members elected to go to C J s Hamburger Restaurant at about 4:00 p.m. where the Martins were joined by family. When we all got back to the park, Johnny Martin made a Peach Crisp with Sprite, and Otis and Sue Edwards provided Vanilla Ice Cream to go on the Peach Crisp. Thursday morning we had enough leftovers to have another pancake breakfast. Don & Iris Schroeder came in from their North Carolina trip to take Otis & Sue Edwards s site with all the shade. Otis Edwards has learned he has a deep tissue infection; and, if it doesn t start improving with medication, he will be admitted to the hospital. Thursday evening, once the sun dropped below the trees, those remaining gathered around the Schroeder s site for a final social fellowship. Secretary, Ann Martin Page 6 Arkansam News 2013

8 ARKANSAS ONE Arkansas One met at Cloud Nine RV Park in Hot Springs, June It was our first visit to Cloud Nine, and we found it to be a really nice facility with a gracious, welcoming staff. There was a Mississippi Mud Cake freshly baked and waiting for us. The sites were neat, clean, and flowers were blooming in flower beds everywhere. The building was decorated, inside and out, with red white and blue for the upcoming holiday. We enjoyed the inside air conditioning for meals and games and the outside porch for morning coffee. Thursday night our hosts, Bruce and Donita Balfour fixed hot dogs. Afterwards we played Mexican Train a couple of rounds, just to refresh our memories of how to play. It didn t take long before all of us were remembering strategies for blocking others. Friday, the Balfours and Jingles went to Little Rock to Camping World for shopping and barbecue for lunch, while the Weavers stayed in Hot Springs for appointments. Saturday was pot luck luncheon. The Nibletts stopped by on their way to Sam s for a hot dog for lunch. We convinced them to stay for lunch with us instead. Bud and Jean Wright and David and Brenda Miller came from Little Rock, and Kirk and Dolly Flanakin came from Hot Springs, so we had a really good group for lunch and our meeting and Donita finally let us have more than just a small bite of our Mississippi Mud cake that she decided to save for Saturday! We had a good time visiting afterwards. Since some of us were leaving early Sunday and others had driven in just for the day, Donita also shared a short devotion on Saturday about friendship and family, and how Good Sam is like family. (I got a text message from James on Monday he finally got his hot dog from Sam s!) Upcoming Campouts: July: There won t be an official campout because of many conflicts, but the Nibletts will be park hosting at Bull Shoals and said they wouldn t mind if some wanted to join them. ( jeniblett@gmail.com) August 15-18, Lake Catherine State Park, Bud & Jean Wright, hosts (and park hosts) Reservations: September 19-22, tba October 17-20: Merrisach Lake Also, remember to keep up with your volunteer hours and report them to Bud Wright each month. MAYFLOWER PILGRIMS Mayflower Pilgrims June campout was held at Toad Suck Park June There were 6 rigs present; we also had two guest Bill & Joann Townsend. We enjoyed their company very much and are looking forward to them joining us again. We also had visitors of children & grand-children coming & going. One member of our group got a year older so we enjoyed birthday cake & ice cream. HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOWARD!!!!! It was a good camp out and visit. DO YOU RECOGNIZE THESE PLACES? I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone. I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no-one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Page 8 Arkansam News 2013
