1 "As a member of Good Sam Club, I pledge to give aid to others, respect nature and the environment, give back to the community and those less fortunate, treat others with dignity and respect and wear a smile (like Good Sam and Good Samantha's) and promote the pledge of the Good Sam Club to others." VOLUME 33 NUMBER 11 Published By And For Arkansas Good Sams December PARK HOST SCHEDULES ARE ON Pages 9 11 Happy New Year from Bob and Peggy Lomax, Good Sam Park Host Coordinators. Greetings from Tucson, Arizona; we are visiting our daughter for Christmas. It is a little cool, but the temperature is supposed to rise to 75 degrees today. We hope each of you are having a wonderful time with your family and friends. In this newsletter, we have included the 2019 park host lists and the guidelines (page 11) which each park host must follow and the procedure which we use when updating the list. Two additional weeks have been added at the beginning of the schedule and two at the end of the year at the request of each park. We tested this during 2018 to determine whether this was needed and if the park superintendent wanted to make this permanent. We were amazed at how full the parks are during those weeks. Thank you to the park host couples who were willing to test this and continue to park host these weeks. From the beginning of our appointment as the park host coordinators, we have strived to involve as many of you as possible, and to ensure that we are as fair as possible when filling each slot. Our primary goal is to ensure that each park has two park host working at all times. In the next newsletter, we will have the guidelines to be followed since each park is a little different in what they expect from our hosts. Thank you for your cooperation as we continue this very important part of our Arkansas Good Sam s Family. We have gained so many friends throughout this journey. We look forward to seeing all of you at the Rally in April. In 2019, our calendar is looking pretty full since it s our last year as Arkansas State Directors. We are looking forward to a super Rally in April; I'm sure with all of us working and pulling together it will be a success! Needless to say, the plans are 90% done; and, with a little tweaking, we'll be ready to go. Watch for Paulette's extra notes and information in other sections of newsletter...so very important. Let's all remember several members in our own state and our South Region states who are in need of our prayers and comfort. AR Good Sams has lost several faithful, loved members in 2018; and we wish those families much love this coming year. A very Happy New Year from us to all of you. May God bless and see you next year. Bill and Dee Belle Point Sam chapter members & guests including Area 1 ASD s Don & Joann Cowell attended the December 11 th dinner/meeting at Logan s Roadhouse, Fort Smith, AR. After the meal the Secretary passed out the 2019 Camping Schedule and the 2019 Directory to all active members present. The Chapter President got everyone s attention and called our meeting to order. Once our meeting was concluded and the 50/50 winner announced we wished each other a Merry Christmas, collected our goodies and headed home. A lot of changes are coming this way in Park Hosting weeks have been increased and will allow a total of 101 park hosts during the year! Good Job!! Plans for the 6 Area Friendships have started; and Area 5 is first on the list March What a great way to start off the camping season. The Veterans chapter will be joining this campout. Thundering Sams chapter will be celebrating it s 40th anniversary this year. If your Chapter will be having a milestone event and should be recognized at the April rally, please notify Bill and Dee by mid-march so that they can make arrangements for this. Bill Nery will be celebrating his 80th birthday on January 9; why not shower him with cards to let him know we re thinking of him! Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones and are struggling with grief, those who are caring for loved ones with medical problems, and those who themselves feel overwhelmed or forgotten. 5 AREA 6 Whispering Pines Travelers Whispering Pines Travelers concluded the 2018 campout season with Christmas dinner at Cheryl s Diner. A BIG thank you to Cheryl and Bill for preparing us a traditional Christmas Dinner. It was excellent and enjoyed by all. We held a short business meeting where the 2019 Chapter Officers were installed by AR State Director Bill Nery. With new members installed, there were 16 rigs present at roll call and two guests. Members brought items from the Personal Needs List to be donated to Fort Roots VA Hospital. Some other projects we have contributed to include baby Afghans and baby hats to Conway Baptist Medical Center, baby hats to Arkansas Children s Hospital in Little Rock and Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, lap robes to Conway Hospice and baby afghans to Conway Regional Medical Center. Also donated were lap robes to the Veterans Home in Vilonia and Arkansas State Veterans Home and socks to the Van. Thank you for your generous giving and taking time to touch someone s life in need. During the November business meeting, a motion was made for those needing to received correspondence by mail provide the chapter secretary 12 stamped, selfaddressed, business-size envelopes. They will be collected at the January business meeting. Wagon Master Bob Lomax presented the 2019 Camping Schedule. We will be joining some of the other chapters Area Friendships which will make us meet at some RV parks twice. Some locations are our usual and some are new. Try to make your reservations at least a month in advance. The number of rigs sometimes determines the site prices. Also, in some situations, the number determines whether the building is available without charge. Be sure when making your reservation, you tell them you are with WPT since they give us a break on the amount charged. Our next campout will be January 19, 2019, Barnhill Restaurant, Jacksonville, at 1:00 pm. CANDIDATE PROFILE BOB & LISA DUCKWORTH Lisa and I are asking for your support in the election for the State Director of the Arkansas Good Sam. We have been married 27 years, have three children, ten grandchildren and are about to have our third great grandchild. Truly, we have been blessed. In 2005 we became life time members of Good Sam and members of Whispering Pines Travelers. As members of this chapter we have each held various offices. We have been Park Hosts for 13 years, having met many of our Arkansas Good Sam chapter members and love every minute of it! Why do we want to become Arkansas State Directors? At the beginning of this year we began traveling with the current State Directors, Bill and Dee Nery, to learn more about what is expected of Arkansas State Directors. First and foremost, after being appointed State Member Recruiting and Retention Coordinators, we see the need to build our membership program, the need to seek camaraderie in Arkansas chapters and strongly continue working closely with our South Region counterparts. We would like to provide other members with the same positive experiences we have had with our Good Sam family. Friendships have been made that will last forever. We have had the desire to become State Directors for some years but found it necessary to retire before reaching for this goal. Lisa and I are both now retired after 23 years service in the USAir Force. To complement this experience, we also volunteered for 10 years as first responders for our Tri-Community Fire Department. While fulfilling my USAF Guard and Reserve duties, I served as a Firefighter/EMT with the City of Little Rock for 30 years. Lisa was a Unit Education and Training Supervisor in the USAF and is also a published author. Her writings include a Technical Manual, True Crime genre short stories, publishing her own cookbooks and researching family genealogy. With this being said, we feel we have the ability to serve you in the position as your State Directors.. This is a lot of information to digest, but we wanted you all to know who we are. Should you have any questions we are always available to talk ( or ); or, if you have recruiting/retention questions, we can also be reached at arkgoodsamrr@gmail.com. In the position of Directors, we understand that we would serve at the discretion of our Good Sam family. Should you decide to choose us, it would be our privilege and honor to serve you. Thank you for your support. Page 5 Arkansam News 2018

6 Big Pine Sams Dorcheat Sams Rough and Ready Sams AREA 4 Derrick City Sams Good Sam Mallards Second Chance Sams Derrick City Sams has been meeting, it s just the newsletters didn t get written. In October we met at the Village One Stop. The original plan was to camp at Lake Ouachita State Park, however, when it was just 3 rigs going, we decided to make it a eating meeting. We like the food at Village One Stop, but having a meeting inside was not one of our better ideas. With 9 rigs represented and another room of locals, it was noisy and hard to hear what was being said. November s campout was at Moro Bay State Park. We had fun even with the rain. It did stop and dry out enough that we could do some painting for the park. The porch at the office always needs some paint! We decided to have our meeting at Abe s Feed House. We arrived as soon as they opened and managed to get the back room which greatly helped with the noise level. We had guests camping with us Greg and Penny Comer;, hopefully, we ll put them on the roll before long. That made 11 rigs camping in the rain and cold. December s meeting was an eating meeting. We met at My Kitchen Table on the square in Magnolia. The owner was able to open in the evening for us and we had the restaurant to ourselves. We had 13 rigs represented and 4 guests. The food was great! She had a buffet set up and we indulged ourselves. We did actually have a meeting we installed our officers for 2019 and decided on our camping schedule for next year. All are welcome to join us! Good Sam Mallards gathered on December 8, 2018 for the annual Christmas party. The decorated fellowship hall greeted guests with a jolly atmosphere. Partygoers included chapter members and guests that included state officers, Bobby & Lisa Duckworth. We did a lot of visiting and catching up on everyone s activities. As always, the banquet table was brimming with delicious food. Our plates were filled and the eating began. We satisfied our sweet tooth with an assortment of scrumptious desserts. After such a fulfilling meal, a few said they would really enjoy a nap, but instead we played several games of Bingo. Lisa said she would never take card number 313 again; it didn t win her a thing! We then turned our attention to playing Dirty Santa with several gifts exchanging hands numerous times; it was all in fun with lots of laughs all around! Due to the nasty weather and distance to travel, several packed up to head for home. The elves got busy and clean-up ensued. Thank you everyone! The business meeting was called to order by President, David Murray. A thank you letter from Dogs for Better Lives and an acknowledgement from Ronald McDonald House for the recent donations were read. The January 10th get together will at the Murray s home at noon. 11 Guidelines for Park Hosting: A park host must belong to a Good Sam chapter which has at least two campouts/year. Each park host must attend the AR State Rally in Texarkana at least once every two years and register for the full rally. A park host should support their chapter, area friendships, state rally, state park superintendents, park rangers, the staff at the visitor/registration center, and the park host coordinator. When park hosting, the host should follow the procedures set by the park. Each park is unique. If you are not sure, check with the staff at the registration center. Park hosts who are presently on the host list will remain until they request to be removed, the superintendent requests they do not return as a host, by the state park host coordinator, or by the state director. There is not appeal for the above. Other appeals will go through the state park host coordinator, and will be reviewed by the state director. In the event a park host asks to be removed or if they are removed by the above, that host must contact the Park Host Coordinator as soon as possible, and the Coordinator will find a replacement either to fill in or on a permanent basis. When a new park host is assigned to fill in for a permanent spot, they will be paired with an experienced park host when possible. If a park host indicates a certain park, then they will only be called to fill in or for a permanent spot at that park. No change of dates will be made to the park host schedule except by the Park Host Coordinator. If a change is needed, contact the Coordinator. A revised park host list is sent to each park and to the newsletter editor every month. Procedure for obtaining a substitute: When the park host coordinator is called that a host cannot fulfill his assigned date, the coordinator uses a spread sheet which has a list of all the eligible park host with their location, whether they presently have a hosting spot, how many times they are hosting, and in which parks they want to host. Those people without a permanent spot will be called first. If there is no answer, a message will not be left since time is of the essence regarding finding a fill-in. If you decline, the next person will be called. A date and the reason for declining is noted on the above spreadsheet as well as typed on a word document to place in the notebook. It is possible that people could be called before finding someone to take that spot. If all the people who do not have a spot decline or do not answer the phone, then those with only one spot will be contacted. If that doesn t result in an acceptance, a person with two spots will be called. We have added two weeks at the beginning of the season and two weeks at the end at each park at their request. At the present time, we have 35 two-week spots with a three week spot after the rally and at the end of the season for a total of 37 at each park. (During the season, we use 37 park hosts at each park, totaling 101 park hosts.) Page 11 Arkansam News Did you know Reservations in Missouri State Parks can be made six months in advance and Arkansas State Parks can be made a year in advance.
