1 "As a member of Good Sam Club, I pledge to give aid to others, respect nature and the environment, give back to the community and those less fortunate, treat others with dignity and respect and wear a smile (like Good Sam and Good Samantha's) and promote the pledge of the Good Sam Club to others." VOLUME 33 NUMBER 8 Published By And For Arkansas Good Sams September 2018 The Area 6 Friendship Campout had 31 rigs and 8 walk ins. We started with a spaghetti dinner after everyone got set up on Tuesday. Guests sitting around afterward enjoyed talking. Let me ask how to clear a room in two seconds? Walk in and say, There is an RV on fire in C section. It took a little for all of us to get back to ourselves. It was not one of our group s RVs. We got back to dessert and door prizes. Second day we had lunch of pulled pork, beans, potato salad, coleslaw and tea that was provided by Moix RV. With bingo and 5 prizes and 5 cash prizes that Harold MacDonald racked up. Then we started to play games. We had dessert to eat that night and more games. Not sure if anyone left the Campgrounds until we went to Old Tyme Burgers. They served us catfish, FF, beans, coleslaw, hush puppies, pie and drink. Then we went back to more door prizes. Hope everyone had a good time. Our next year Area 6 Friendship will be May leaving on the 17. Location is Brecks RV Park in Batesville, AR. Everyone will need to call me and let me know first, then call the park to make reservations. I will need a head count. VOTING PROCEDURES FOR ARKANSAS STATE GOOD SAM DIRECTOR ARE SET FORTH ON PAGE 5. ALSO ON PAGE 5 YOU WILL FIND A CANDIDATE PROFILE FOR BOB AND LISA DUCKWORTH. THIS IS THE ONLY PROFILE THIS EDITOR HAS RECEIVED AT THE CURRENT PUBLI- CATION OF THE ARKANSAM NEWS. Area 1 Friendship Campout Area 1 ASDs Don and Joann Cowel, reported that the 2018 Area 1 Friendship Campout, held September 20-23, was a great success and especially well supported by the three Northwest Chapters: Bella Vista Traveling Sams, Jolly Rogers Sams and Belle Point Sams. Among the 79 in attendance this year were special guests, Bill and Dee Nery, AR State Good Sam Directors. Registration began, along with get acquainted and other activities on Thursday, followed by a potluck dinner for all. The evening featured an auction of items the membership brought to sell, including homemade cakes, cookies, pies and other baked goods. Friday morning a tour was held for those wishing to visit the National Rod and Custom Car Hall of Fame Museum. Museum owner and famous custom car builder, Darrel Starbird, now 85 years young, gave us a personal tour of his museum and his work shop, while telling us some of his personal stories regarding his life in the custom car building industry that started for him in His fortune was earned building his famous cars but even more so, in selling his car designs to the manufacturers of toy cars, who then made replicas of his full size cars. Each morning breakfasts were provided by the various Chapters in attendance. Don and Joann send their very special thanks for the great support of all the programs this week, especially the wonderful breakfasts provided by the Jolly Rogers and Belle Point Sams chapters. An excellent dinner was also provided buy the Area 1 Directors, with half of the cost of the meat, being paid for by the Cedar Oaks staff. Don and Joann, with great help from the Bella Vista Traveling Sams, served Ice Cream Sundae s for dessert. Another great meal was a catered meal provided by Okie Smokies Barbecue restaurant in Grove. The Bella Vista Chapter provided desserts for the evening and Cash Prize Bingo completed a very busy and exciting day s activities. The next day featured a Corn Hole Competition between all three Chapters with the Jolly Rogers Chapter winning first place and a nice cash prize for their chapter s treasury. Other activities included many other games and activities. Chapter meetings were held to elect Chapter officers for next year and firm up the camping schedules for next year. Great fun and a barrel of laughs followed when Laye Bennett, President of the Jolly Rogers Chapter, served as the Auctioneer of our money raising event that evening. Highlight of the evening included Ice Cream Sundae s and special entertainment by singer Mr. Cliff Shelder. To close out this year s event, an ecumenical devotional service was held Sunday morning.

We ve had more than one morning at 40 degrees. The wind also blows hard most of the time. While we were attending the Area 1 Friendship in Grove, OK, the campground had 12 of rain! But we put our awning in before we left. Bob and Lisa Duckworth have accepted a position on staff as Member Recruiting and Retention Coordinators. They re excited about this and hope to grow the chapters of AR Good Sam. If you need clarification of the voting procedures for the upcoming State Directors election, check out this information on Page 5. There is also a candidate profile there. We have been married 27 years, have three children, ten grandchildren and are about to have our third great grandchild. Truly, we have been blessed. In 2005 we became life time members of Good Sam and members of Whispering Pines Travelers. As members of this chapter we have each held various offices. We have been Park Hosts for 13 years, having met many of our Arkansas Good Sam chapter members and love every minute of it! Why do we want to become Arkansas State Directors? At the beginning of this year we began traveling with the current State Directors, Bill and Dee Nery, to learn more about what is expected of Arkansas State Directors. First and foremost, after being appointed State Member Recruiting and Retention Coordinators, we see the need to build our membership program, the need to seek camaraderie in Arkansas chapters and strongly continue working closely with our South Region counterparts. We would like to provide other members with the same positive experiences we have had with our Good Sam family. Friendships have been made that will last forever. We have had the desire to become State Directors for some years but found it necessary to retire before reaching for this goal. Lisa and I are both now retired after 23 years service in the USAir Force. To complement this experience, we also volunteered for 10 years as first responders for our Tri- Community Fire Department. While fulfilling my USAF Guard and Reserve duties, I served as a Firefighter/EMT with the City of Little Rock for 30 years. Lisa was a Unit Education and Training Supervisor in the USAF and is also a published author. Her writings include a Technical Manual, True Crime genre short stories, publishing her own cookbooks and researching family genealogy. With this being said, we feel we have the ability to serve you in the position as your State Directors.. This is a lot of information to digest, but we wanted you all to know who we are. Should you have any questions we are always available to talk ( or ); or, if you have recruiting/retention questions, we can also be reached at arkgoodsamrr@gmail.com. In the position of Directors, we understand that we would serve at the discretion of our Good Sam family. Should you decide to choose us, it would be our privilege and honor to serve you. Thank you for your support. Page 5 Arkansam News 2018

6 Big Pine Sams Dorcheat Sams Rough and Ready Sams AREA 4 Derrick City Sams Good Sam Mallards Second Chance Sams Derrick City Sams went to Lake Catherine for the September Campout. We had a very relaxing campout. We explored restaurants at noon time: Texas Longhorn, Bubba s Brew, Red Oak Station, and Smokin in Style. Bubba s Brew on Lake Hamilton is on Airport Road and was a hit. They had two dining rooms. The bottom is family friendly; the upstairs has a bar and pool tables. We ate upstairs. You can get downstairs without taking the stairs just park downstairs. When you go, go hungry. If you want dessert...like cake share. Red Oak Station also got good reviews from those who went. They have been open now for 3 months. We did have grilled hamburgers and sausage Thursday evening with everyone bringing something to go along with it. The Godwin s brought their daughter, Crystal, son-in-law Nathan, and new baby, Oliver, plus Nathan s father John Hough. Needless to say, Oliver was a hit. The Ainsworth s also brought friends, Stick and Jo- Ann Payne. Good Sam Mallards had a great September camp out at Cane Creek State Park in spite of the hot weather. Thursday, the group had a catch up party with hot dogs and all the trimmings, and a delightful visit with Tommy and Diane Ferrell; Friday was games all day, and out to eat at Catfish Place at Country Village with Ferrels; Harold and Joyce West and her sister Mary joined in. No Cane Creek weekend is complete without a stop at the Bakery! Saturday, we were excited to have Shirley Blackwell and Sherry Hoffpauir join us for games and a lunch of lasagna. That afternoon, some enjoyed a Gospel and Bluegrass band concert at the Park Pavilion. We came back to camp for a dessert of hot apple pie and ice cream and Hobo cake. Sunday, after a casserole breakfast Pat Collier led the devotional, Juanita Hutchinson led the prayer and singing, and Danny Hutchinson led the chapter meeting. Much discussion, and all agreed they were very displeased with the remark of the CEO of Camping World. After the business meeting, members played games until time to head home. A big Thank You to hostess Pat Collier for a great weekend. Rough & Ready Sams Second Chance Sams Arkansas Veterans Sams AREA 5 Queen Wilhelmina Sams Mena Melon City Sams Hope Six rigs represented the Melon City Sams at the campout at White Oak Lake SP in September. The chapter meeting was called to order by President Calvin Stovall. The slate of officers for 2019 will remain the same as for Donations to the Hempstead County Closet were collected - girl's pajamas and underclothes -and cash totaling $ Chapter dues were collected from those present, and the ballot for the nomination of new State Directors beginning in 2020 was discussed. Election results will be announced at the Arkansas Good Sams Rally next April. Saturday morning's scheduled breakfast outdoors didn't take place when rain moved into the area; but a late lunch was eaten that afternoon at What's Cookin' in Camden. The October campout is at Crater of Diamonds SP, beginning on the 4th, and will be hosted by Julia Imler and Ruth Ann Hairston. Cypress Valley RV Park in Jefferson, TX will be the site of the final campout of 2018, beginning November 28th. Page 6 Arkansam News 2018

We pulled in to the park and ASDs Girtie and Tom were waiting for us along with Bill & Dee Nery and Mike & Mary Ann Hancock. We enjoyed visiting with each other and seeing friends again. Some of the other chapters included Rock City Sams, Whispering Pines, Melon City Sams, and Belle Point Sams. There were card games and a corn hole tournament on Tuesday. Added excitement was a motorhome fire in the park, with fire trucks, smoke, and major damage, but no injuries. A 3000 piece puzzle kept many of us searching for pieces for days. We finally got the border completed, but not much of the inside. It is neatly packaged and ready to start again at the Rally in the spring. Thursday morning was an outside poor man s golf tournament. After lunch was the Chinese auction, with lots of goodies, and a live auction, too. The evening meal was a trip to Old Tyme Burgers for a catfish dinner with fries, hush puppies, beans, slaw, and their good homemade pie. Our business meeting was on Wednesday afternoon. Details are in the minutes. Judy Larson posted lots of good pictures on her Facebook page and on the Arkansas Good Sam page. Thanks Girtie and Tom for a great time. La Petite Roche. River Valley Sams Rock City Sams On Friday, September 21, 3 rigs from Spa City Sams met at Mill Creek Ranch Resort in Canton, TX. The weather was rainy for the first couple of days, but we made the best of it. We ate at the Dairy Palace a couple of times. It was nearby and very good food and service. On Sunday we played Mexican Train in the pavilion near our campsites at the resort. Since there were 7 of us it was an all-afternoon game. We had a lot of fun. We went shopping for yard art at a few of the shops before the First Monday crowd started arriving. We had lunch at Buttermilk s. It was wonderful! The chicken fried steak was perfect. Tuesday, the guys all loaded up in Jimmy s truck to head to Mineola to drop Bill off for a treatment and then geocache until Bill was finished. The ladies went to Paul Michael s to shop then stopped at the street taco place at the entrance to the resort for a light lunch. The street tacos were delicious. We played Quixx in the pavilion until it was time to get supper ready. Angie brought out our Chapter scrapbook to show us her handy-work. It s a wonderful representation of our Chapter s year. We held our meeting Wednesday then went to the Morton Salt Museum in Grand Saline, TX. Thursday some of the men took Bill to his treatment in Mineola then went off to geocache and the rest of us went to First Monday Trade Days and shopped till we dropped. The RV resort has a shuttle that took us to the gate and picked us up in the afternoon. That was very convenient. Our next campout is at Lake Catherine October November luncheon is Nov.
