2 FROM THE DIRECTOR Samboree time is here again! Everything is a go and all we need is YOU to make it a great time for it's going to be a beautiful "SPRING TIME IN ARKANSAS". It sure has been so far (and early, too). I had to have hernia repair surgery a few weeks ago and have not been able to do much since, but I expect to be at least 90% by Samboree time. It's been a rainy morning, so I've been watching it rain from my recliner (between naps). We are planning to start a military Good Sam chapter, so all vets come on down to Texarkana and sign up. I also want to remind chapters to keep track of volunteer hours each month and send them to me, along with number of members participating, number of hours worked, and pictures too, if you have them. Be sure to check out the Friendship Campout in your area and go and support it. You ll be glad you did. We were able to attend Area 4 Friendship a couple of days. We camped in a cabin at Pecan Grove RV Park since our camper needed more work than I was able to do. J.D. and Lawrence showed us all a good time. (Of course, they had lots of help from their chapters.) Next Friendship coming up is Area 5 at the Fair Park RV Park in Hope, AR May 1-5. We are still in need of a chapter to decorate the stage for the Fall Samboree and for Spring and Fall of As always, SMILE, GOD LOVES YOU!!! Tommy QUEEN WILHELMINA GOOD SAMS The Queen Wilhelmina Good Sams journeyed to Lake Catherine State Park for their March Campout. Traveling to Hot Springs were members: Ira and Thelma Berg, Richard and Jane White, Billy and Carolyn Wood, and Wingo and Pat Johnson. Guests attending were Bobby and Gail Galloway. After arriving at their campsites and getting set up, the group put up their Tent and visited for a while. Hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixings were enjoyed by the group. The weather was extra cold and there was a burn ban so everyone turned in early on Tuesday night. On Wednesday several of the guys went trout fishing bringing back eight nice sized trout. Others just spent time the beautiful sunny day visiting, shopping or going to Doctor s appointments. Steaks were cooked by the guys and everyone contributed the rest of the meal and desserts. Wow! We have really good cooks, especially for desserts. Much too cold to sit outside without a campfire made for less visiting than we would like. Trout fishing was again on the agenda on Thursday with eight trout finding their way back to camp with the guys. Rain, cold, and a strong wind forced us to take our tent down early. We had our meeting and went to the Cracker Barrel for dinner. Warmer weather is hoped for in April as we visit Crater of Diamonds State Park and the Spring Samboree later in April. ARKKANSAS ONE The February meeting was held at Tim Choate s home at Turtle Creek in Haskell with 11 members attending. Tim had a huge pot of spaghetti, a big pan of sauce & meatballs, hot garlic bread, and tea waiting for us. Tables were set with fine china and silverware. We couldn t have asked for nicer service anywhere. But best of all was when Tim said, I see how hard you ladies work getting things ready for meals every time we eat...when you come to my house, I want you to sit back and not do anything! How s that for royal treatment?...and the men gave his restaurant a 2+1/2 star rating! The meeting was called to order by Bud Wright, President. Tim was thanked for being host. Tim said it gave him something to do on Saturday...he plays golf every day, Mon-Fri, and church on Wednesday night and Sunday! Corrections were made to the new membership and birthday/ anniversary lists. We had news from the Whipps who are in south Texas working as gate guards in the oil fields, and a card from Sam Kelso. Both plan to be in Texarkana for the Spring Samboree. Sam says he really misses his Good Sam friends. Upcoming meetings will be at the Samboree in Texarkana in April and at the Area 6 Friendship in N Little Rock in May. We will eat out in March with David and Brenda choosing the place. After the meeting we had a nice time visiting and talking (while Tom took care of the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen). Page 2 Arkansam News 2012

3 Paulette s Palette Our winter is coming to a fast end!! Most of our park RV friends have headed home and we will be leaving the 12th of April headed for the Spring Samboree in Texarkana. PLEASE send your articles for the NEXT newsletter to me at Gann Ridge Road, Garfield, AR OR you can your article as the body of your . With the internet, you ll never have to worry that your article is lost in snail mail or in the bottom of the mail bag waiting for discovery!! The Samboree plans are in the final stages and we know it will be a great time of fun for everyone who attends. Be sure to attend the Presidents Meeting and the Secretaries Meeting if you hold one of those offices for your chapter or are a designated representative. The information shared during these meetings is an important way to keep abreast of Good Sam changes in policy or help being offered to members. RIVER VALLEY SAMS The meeting was called to order at noon on March 24th by Dudley Wells, President at the Shoal Bay Campground at New Blaine, AR. The minutes from the last meeting and the treasurer s report were read and accepted by members in attendance. A discussion was brought up on what our chapter is spending our money on, and it was agreed that some of the money would pay for a meeting/game room when camped-out on hot weekends. Our chapter received a Congratulations for our highway clean-up this last year! Remember that we are camping at the Crater of Diamonds April 13, 14,15 and then we will again meet at Texarkana, AR on April 19, 20,21,22 for the Spring Samboree. We will also need some families to help out with a breakfast on Saturday at the Sambroee and our chapter will be contributing $20 for door prizes. Tickets were sold for the monthly door prize and Cora Bois won it. She will bring the door prize for the April meeting campout at The Crater of Diamonds in Murfreesboro, AR. Respectively submitted, Marsha Wells, Secretary DERRICK CITY GOOD SAMS The March monthly meeting was held at the friendship campout at Pecan Grove at Lake Chicot. About ten were present. The games were fun and everyone enjoyed the fellowship! A box of key chains was received from Pilot/Flying J to be passed out at the Samboree. Murphy Oil is also sending a box of items that we hope will arrive in time. Our chapter also agreed to donate two ten dollar door prizes. I would like to encourage everyone who could to be with us at the Samboree in Texarkana. Good health and safety to all. The Spring Good Sam Samboree: BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!!!!! 4 DORCHEAT SAMS The Dorcheat Sams traveled to Lake Village for the Area 4 Friendship meeting March 8th-11th. We had 2 rigs go up on Monday and one joined us on Wednesday. The weather was great and everyone enjoyed the fellowship and seeing old friends as well as making new friends. Thursday James Elmore set up the games (washers and poor man s golf.) Thursday night we shared a brown bag supper. Friday morning the games started with dominoes, skip-bo and bean bag. Friday night Mr. Bunker furnished supper, he fixed Spaghetti and Salad and all the trimmings. Saturday we had a cake walk, Chinese auction and sand bag baseball. Saturday night we had pot-luck. We had a lot of good food. Everyone in our group won a door prizes and Medals. Sunday morning James Elmore brought the devotion. All good things come to an end and we loaded up and headed for home. Our next trip will be to Rayne, LA and next to our Samboree in Texarkana. JOLLY ROGERS GOOD SAMS The Jolly Rogers met at a breakfast meeting on March 9th at the Rogers Golden Corral. The meeting was conducted by Vice President Marion Cowen with 18 members present. Robert Gandy and LaVerne Andersh spent all afternoon March 1 checking and cleaning all of the birdhouses at Horseshoe Bend COE park, our adopted park. More work on birdhouses needs to be done during our cleanup campout in May. Seven rigs indicated that they plan to attend the Spring Samboree in Texarkana. LaVerne Andersh reported on their one month stay in McAllen, TX in January and February and about visiting with our members from our chapter and other Good Sam members there. Next meeting will be at the Texarkana Samboree. Page 4 Arkansam News 2012

5 BELLE POINT SAMS The month of March has come and given us rain with cooler weather. The Chapter was taken on a Mystery Trip conducted by Don Jones. The area where we met was at the rest stop on I-40 near Sallisaw, OK. This reporter counted 13 rigs at the rest area waiting to go. And go we did, wondering where Don was leading us. Turning south of Salisaw on Hwy 59 there we were at the Riverside RV Camp only about 10 miles from Salisaw. Gene & Sue Boone met the chapter at the rest area in their car since they had to go back to Fort Smith. They went back because their Daughter was going to have surgery, and Sue s sister was already in the hospital. Al and Alice and Tom & Dixie came in their cars for the meeting. The Boone s came in time for the meeting and to eat and the three couples went home. And Otis and Sue Edwards came in their car because they traded their old RV and the new one was not ready for camping. The total number of people that came to the Meeting/Meal was 31. That amounted to 9 guests and 22 chapter members. The meeting was supposed to be in the crafts building but since the weather was so nice that was changed to outside of Arnie s new RV under the awning. By the way Arnie did buy another RV after his other one burned to the ground. Arnie purchased a 2004 Alfa Gold which was an upgrade from his 2004 Alfa. Don Jones asked that everyone going to Pettit Jean State Park for the chapter s April meeting (April 10-13, 2012) should get there on their own and have their rigs tied down by 1:00pm. Don Jones said that the MARCH FIND will be March 29, It will be at the LOG CABIN RESTAURANT at 1:30pm and eat at 2:00pm. The Restaurant is located at THE CORNER OF HWY 71 SOUTH AND HWY 10. Hwy 10 is where you turn off of Hwy 71 south to go to Greenwood, AR. Linda Howard asked that all the visitors that came to the meeting/meal come forward and have their picture taken for the 2012 scrapbook. Wednesday, all of the people that stayed overnight hung around and did their thing knowing that an evening meal was planned at the Salisaw Fish Restaurant located across the road from the RV Camp. We were to meet there at 5:30pm and eat at 6:00pm. A total of 27 people showed up to eat a good fish supper. Those that came back in their cars to eat with the group were Tom and Dixie House. Al and Alice came to the camp area to go to the dinner on their Motorcycle. The other 4 people missed a good fish dinner. Thursday came and one by one the rigs started to leave the camp. Your Reporter Don Schroeder BELLA VISTA TRAVELING SAMS Twenty-three members and guests of the Bella Vista Traveling Sam s met Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Bud s Chicken in Bentonville. President Joann Cowell called the meeting to order and Don Cowell led in prayer. After lunch Joann introduced the returning guests: Vern & Oleatha Sutter and Howard and Joann Moore. 7 COSSATOT SAMS Cossatot Sams held the February meeting at the home of Liz and Bob Stuart on the 17th. The meeting was called to order by President Bob Kellums. Minutes were read and approved; the Treasurer s Report was given. Everyone enjoyed the soup supper and all the desserts. Our chapter will go to the Spring Samboree on April 19th. The May Friendship is the 1st through the 5th at Hope, AR. We will do the biscuits and gravy on Wednesday morning. A motion to adjourn was made and seconded. Our next campout will be at Oak Grove RV Park, DeQueen Lake on March GOOD FELLOWSHIP, GOOD FUN AND GOOD FOOD = GREAT AREA 4 FRIENDSHIP Twenty-six rigs plus two walk-ins met at the Pecan Grove RV Park March Many Good Sammers came in early so they could enjoy more time visiting. Rain had been forecast for all three days; that fact and illnesses kept several at home. They were all missed. In actuality, there was very little rain. James Elmore took over outside games and did a terrific job. Pat Havlik was in charge of inside games and also did a fantastic job. Participation in games was high; 72% of those present played the games. (see game results on page 8) We were happy to have Rex and Katy Weaver with us; a large number of ladies really enjoyed learning (or practicing) their line dancing with Katy's teaching. Tuesday night most of the early arrivals had buffet at Harlow s for only $5 per person. Great food. Terrific buy. Thursday night was a simple brown bag meal. Friday, a Sweets Walk was held; most winners donated their winning prizes to Friday night s desserts. They were scrumptious. Mary Lou Mahurin entertained us with her group The Sisters. Friday night Mr. and Mrs. Bunker prepared a spaghetti and salad dinner. Dinner was followed by ten games of Bingo. Early Saturday morning, several chapters came to make coffee, cook sausage and make pancakes. Big Pine Sams set up the Chinese Auction and sold tickets. There were some nice items donated this year, which brought in some heated competition with ticket holders trying to out win someone else. Shirley Blackwell won the grand prize - a $50 Wal Mart gift card. A silent auction and a live auction brought the total contributions to $625. Much appreciation goes to William and Martha Hosto, Harold West, Sherry Hoffpauir and Bill Bunker for donating items for live auctions. Saturday evening a delicious potluck was served. The Mallards entertained us with a humorous skit. Door prizes were then given out including several items from the Bunkers. It was an honor to have a number of State Staff present including Tommy and Shirley Blackwell, Bernie and Judy Bauer, Tommy and Diane Ferrell, Buzz Goodwin, Pat and Mike Havlik, James (Red) and Wilene Stinson, and FH and Linda Taweel. It was also good to have the Dorcheat Sams with us. They have always been an asset to Area 4. Sunday morning coffee and cinnamon rolls were enjoyed. James Elmore, Dorcheat Sams, brought the devotional. Tommy Blackwell led the group in a hymn (next year, let s all get the same songbook). Goodbyes were said with discussions of seeing each other again at the April Samboree. Page 7 Arkansam News 2012

9 A NOTE FROM: Rex and I had a good time at the Area 4 Friendship at Lake Village.
