2 FROM THE DIREC- TORS Hello to all, Spring is finally here!! Beautiful weather (at least for now), blooming flowers, budding trees, rain, sleet and snow!!! That's our beautiful State of Arkansas. It s been a very busy month for us with the Area 5 Friendship earlier in March, which I would like to add: If you weren t there, you missed a great one. Ruth Ann had the largest attendance ever for Area 5. Good job guys! Thanks to Rock City Sams and Whispering Pines for helping out with the Camping World's RV Sale Event; they served some "mean-looking hot dogs and there was great fun and fellowship. We have some new advertisers in the Arkansam News. Take a look and keep them in mind when you re planning campouts. Each park is unique and offers different things for different groups. Attention: Veterans Arkansas Veteran Sams will meet Friday, April 14, at 3:15 PM in the AG Building, Room A. At the same time in Room B the wives will get their heads together. We re getting ready for the April RV Rally at the 4- States Fairgrounds in Texarkana. Check out the rally agenda on page 4. You won t want to miss a single thing! The Area 5 Friendship was a big hit. Page 9 has a recap that will make you want to add at least one extra friendship campout to your schedule this year. Step out and make new friends by attending a new one. I m told by Duke Monroe that the Dutch Oven Cookoff is coming together nicely. Even if you don t participate, stroll through the cooking area and get in line for the tasting. You ll be drooling over these dishes prepared in cast iron pots just like a lot of our grandmothers used!! At 1:00 PM on Friday in the AG Building is the 2017 Park Host meeting. Meeting attendance is required to continue individual park hosting, and there are forms there to fill out to let Roger know you re interested if you haven t been on a schedule before. Veterans Sams will meet in the AG Building, Room A at 3:15 PM on Friday. At the same time in Room B the wives will meet. If you have questions about this special chapter Gene Hicklin, President, will be on the arena floor. He s always glad to talk about the chapter. So many of our chapters are involved in projects throughout the year supporting organizations who need what we can provide on an ongoing or ad hoc basis. A new feature in the Arkansam News will be information about these philanthropic projects (contact information, how to get involved, supplies needed, etc.). Tuesday, March 14 th, Belle Point Sam chapter members and guests caravanned to Greenleaf State Park in Braggs, Oklahoma. At 4 PM we gathered at the Hoot Owl Meeting Room for our chapter meeting. Once our meeting was concluded and the 50/50 winner proclaimed, we headed to our rigs to retrieve our potluck contribution. Wednesday morning after a delicious potluck breakfast we gathered up to caravan to Muskogee to visit the Five Civilized Tribes Museum which we all enjoyed. After lunch at a local BBQ restaurant, we made it back to the Park for our afternoon naps! Thursday morning six ladies traveled to Gore, OK where they visited a honey of a quilt fabric store The Fabric Patch, shopped at Anne Paige Gift Shop and on to Emily s Tearoom & Garden Gate Shop for lunch and a little more shopping. Other members toured Fort Gibson, visited antique shops and had lunch at the Casino. There were several comments that this was a good campout with lots of good food and great fellowship. Looking forward to the next campout! Note: Any pictures taken are posted on our Face Book Page. 6 AREA 4 Big Pine Sams Derrick City Sams Dorcheat Sams Good Sam Mallards Rough & Ready Sams Big Pine Sams Dorcheat Sams had our January & February meetings again at Bayou Dorcheat. We enjoyed having visitors both times as well as 10 of our regular members. We all ate the great food and enjoyed each others company so very much! We voted on our 2017 camping schedule and will start out in Marksville next month, April 20th-24th. We hope to have a good group going on our first campout for the year. Judy Carter, Secretary Derrick City Sams Good Sam Mallards WOW! WHAT A CAMPOUT! Pat Collier was a great hostess. Campers who had already been there a week began to tell us about the weather when we arrived: It had ben beautiful, but that was about to change. The weatherman was predicting thunderstorms, high winds, and much colder with a good chance for sleet, ice, or snow. We did have rain and wind but no sleet or snow and very little ice. We looked like Eskimos moving around outside. A fish fry was cancelled for obvious reasons; tuna was the only fish at the meal we served inside. Rain was again predicted for Saturday so we decided to eat out at a new Chinese restaurant. We found it to be good and filling. Of course, games and lots of visiting filled any gaps! Sunday after feasting on a breakfast provided by some of our members, we sang songs and were led in a devotion by Pat, What do we give up for Lent? There wasn t a boring minute and, all in all, it was a memorable campout. Our April meeting will be dining out at The Bullpen in Dewitt on April 7 th at 5:30PM. We plan to see all at the State Rally in Texarkana April May is the Friendship Campout May 3-6 at Pecan Grove, Lake Village. Meeting adjourned. 7 Arkansas Veterans Sams Ouachita Ramblin Sams AREA 5 Melon City Sams Queen Wilhelmina Sams Arkansas Veterans Sams Melon City Sams Ouachita Ramblin Sams Queen Wilhelmina Sams Arkansas One River Valley Sams AREA 6 La Petite Roche Rock City Sams Spa City Sams Thundering Sams Whispering Pines Travelers The March meeting of Arkansas One was held at Cloud Nine RV Park in Hot Springs at the Area 5 Friendship and Veterans Rally. Six member rigs were camping. It was fun to meet with chapters in Area 5 and members of the Veterans chapter. Ruth Ann Hairston did a great job of planning meals, activities and entertainment. We went out to eat Mexican food on Wednesday and had a catered catfish meal on Thursday. Friday was breakfast fixed by the men of Melon City, then barbecue sandwiches late that afternoon. There was an endless supply of cookies and cake. We played card games, card bingo, regular bingo, and some went on a tour of the Whetstone factory. Lots took home items from the Chinese auction, and some spent even more money at the live auction. Friday night we listened to a country and gospel group. We all headed for home Saturday morning after a continental breakfast and a brief devotion La Petite Roche River Valley Sams March and you ve got to love Arkansas weather!. Rock City Sams first campout of 2017 started out with sunshine and temperatures in the 70 s and ended with rain and temperatures in the low 30 s. The weather never stops us from enjoying our time together by eating out, potluck, games, working on the project of the month, and great fellowship with friends. Thursday was the day for greeting everyone as they arrived at J&J s RV Park in Hot Springs; the first order of business was to pick the place to eat. Mr. Whiskers was picked because of the tasty fish and shrimp they offer. Back at the clubhouse, the games began with a new card game called Garbage. On Friday, the ladies gathered in the clubhouse to work on finishing 15 dresses that Carol Hall and Lena Coker made for the Dress-a- Girl-Around-the-World project. What a blessing this chapter has received, knowing that some little girl will have her first new dress. Other ladies worked on looms to make noggins for patients at Arkansas Children Hospital. We were also delighted to welcome State Directors Bill and Dee Nery as they joined us for the fellowship and potluck. After the chapter meeting on Saturday, members worked on planning the trip to Texarkana for the State Rally in April, as well as a chapter trip to Chattanooga, TN in May. We are always looking forward to the next time we can camp together. Submitted by Peggy Bundy Page 7 Arkansam News 2017

8 AREA 6 (continued) On March 12, 2017 eleven of the Spa City Sams Chapter rigs met at Lake Ouachita SP for our first campout of Each day the early bird group walked several miles with some pets and also picked up trash in the park. They enjoyed interacting with the other campers that were up moving about as well as the park hosts, the Robbins. On Monday we met in the Visitors Center for afternoon games; we entertained many curious visitors!. We also had a soup potluck in the evening which was very welcome since it was chilly out. (See the article on page 9 about the Work Day.) On Tuesday after the barge trip the ladies got together and went into Hot Springs Village for retail therapy. Thursday was the warmest day of the campout. It was still very chilly and cloudy but we gathered at the Rough s rig for a brunch potluck and our meeting. Our chapter will be selling raffle tickets at the Rally for one of Doug Tinkle s white light-up angels that he hangs on the front of his rig to help raise money for our donation projects. Please plan on volunteering to man the table where we re selling them sometime during the rally. It will be a team effort. Upcoming campouts: April Spring Rally at Texarkana. May 7-12 Branson, MO Treasure Lake RV Resort. (see Helen Tinkle for reservations) June Crater of Diamonds State Park, Murfreesboro, AR Thundering Sams "officially" kicked off our camping season March with a campout at Maumelle Corp of Engineers Park on the banks of the Arkansas River in Little Rock. We had eight member rigs and one retired member rig attending. Fun was had fishing, visiting, eating a chip-in taco dinner on "taco Tuesday". While the guys fished and "hung out," the ladies were treated to a spa -type hand and foot soak and message. (Thank you for the luxury, Cathy Jolly.) Our traditional group dinner was held at Bone Fish Grill where most of us enjoyed Bang Bang shrimp. Though this was our first camp-out, we have not been inactive. In January we held an eating meeting in Benton at Western Sizzlin' where we put the final plans together for our 2017 camping season. We felt honored to have Bill and Dee Nery join us there. In February we held a Sweetheart Dinner honoring the loves of our lives and the love of camping together. Several of us also attended the Area 5 Friendship held at Cloud 9 RV Park on March As always, everyone who attended wishes to thank Ruth Ann Hairston for a wonderful job hosting an extra fun time. 10 SPA CITY SAMS HAS WORKDAY AT LAKE OUACHITA STATE PARK Tuesday was our workday at the Visitor s Center. We cleaned the beds, trimmed the bushes and put out new mulch. It looked much nicer when we were finished. After the work was finished we went into Jessieville and ate lunch at The Shack. It was very good and the service was great. Cleaning up the beds at the Visitor s Center When we were finished at the Visitor s Center, James the Assistant Superintendent at the park addressed our group and asked if we would join him on Wednesday at 1:00 for a re-dedication of his barge that takes visitors out on the lake. On Wednesday we bundled up and met at the marina and watched the filming of the video about the remodeled barge. Then we boarded it for a journey out onto the lake. James told us the history of the barge. The barge was remodeled by inmates at the Arkansas Department of Corrections. It gives them the opportunity to develop skills for when they re released back into society. It was very nicely done. A NOTE FROM ROGER ROBBINS, PARK HOST COORDINATOR: Greetings Park Hosts, The park hosting season has come in like a lion this year with our hosts experiencing all types of weather from snow to tornado warnings. Hopefully spring has sprung at this point and the weather will better serve our hosts and campers. As some of you may have heard through the grapevine, Linda and I have sold our home in Arkansas, spent a month at JJ s RV Park in Hot Springs and then two months at Paradise South RV Park in Mercedes, Texas. The plan was to wait until returning from Texas to search for another home; however, plans changed when a home became available near our grandchildren in Tennessee. We bought the home at the end of January, arrived there with our camper in late February and have been moving in ever since! Since our residence has changed to Tennessee it is necessary for us to resign from the Arkansas Good Sams Park Host Coordination position, and I am happy to announce that Bob and Peggy Lomax have accepted the position. They will do a wonderful job, and I hope each of you will welcome them to this position at the Rally in Texarkana. Linda and I will be at the Rally and will be turning over the park host scheduling to them at that time. Until then, please contact me as usual if you are unable to fulfill your scheduled time for any reason. I ask that you be as patient with Bob Lomax as you were with me when I first took over from Bob Scott. I would also remind you that everyone has the same dates each year at each park unless they are voluntarily given up. When a vacancy does occur, the list of those who attended the park host seminar as a new park host are considered first for the opening. It is rare that there are enough openings that each new park host will get the opportunity to park host their first year. If not, we ask that you be patient as it doesn t mean you are never going to be called. I look forward to seeing you in Texarkana. Roger Robbins Amroadrider@yahoo.com Page 10 Arkansam News 2017

12 Attention all Dutch Oven Cooking Aficionados (look it up!): Mr. Niblett and Mr. Hicklin have spent the past year regaling in their esteemed statuses (statusi would be a more proper plural) as the Kings of Arkansas Good Sams Charcoal Dutch Oven Cooking categories of Dessert and Non-dessert respectively. The dethroning process will begin at the 2017 Texarkana Rally. To that end, this is a call for challengers to sign up to compete. The event will be on Friday this year, with contestants preparing their entries after Mr. Robbins' Park Host Training session. We plan to have the "Tasting" competition around 3:30 pm. The exact timing of the event will be determined shortly by the Rally organizers. We have opened the competition to our out-of-state Good Sammers attending the Rally. Instead of having a Dutch Oven Cooking seminar prior to the event, those wanting to learn the "how to" secrets are invited to join us as we prepare our delicious entries. You can watch, take notes, and ask questions as you watch the masterful preparations.
