1 "As a member of Good Sam Club, I pledge to give aid to others, respect nature and the environment, give back to the community and those less fortunate, treat others with dignity and respect and wear a smile (like Good Sam and Good Samantha's) and promote the pledge of the Good Sam Club to others." VOLUME 32 NUMBER 7 Published By And For Arkansas Good Sams September/October 2017 Good Sam Area 1 Friendship Campout was full of activities for members and guests!! Northwest Arkansas Good Sam camping chapters from Rogers, Ft Smith and Bella Vista, gathered together on Sept for their annual Friendship Campout at Cedar Oaks Campground, in Grove Oklahoma. Thirty camping units of all sizes and shapes came together to enjoy a planned weekend of fun activities and fellowship. Don and Joann Cowell, Area 1 ASD s, organized the activities for the weekend, which included lots of great food, excellent fellowship and games, as well as a very interesting and enjoyable tour of the beautiful and historic Coleman Theater in Miami, OK. Built by George Coleman, local mining magnate, the opulent structure with Louis XV interior design was known as the Jewel of Route 66. Many famous entertainers like Bob Hope and Bing Crosby played there during the days of vaudeville. During our tour we had the opportunity to hear the magnificent and fully restored Wurlitzer pipe organ. While Joann raved about the absolutely, astounding sounds coming out of the organ, Don marveled at the magnificent chandelier and total restoration of the facility originally built in l929. Other points of interest associated with Route 66 included the Famous Waylan's Ku-Ku Burger Restaurant and an original Gas Station located on the original Route 66. Saturday evening after a pot luck meal a Gospel Quartet entertained everyone. Lots of other activities were enjoyed including Bingo and Prizes, an auction of camping equipment, and lessons on how to make Stained Glass pieces. Each evening we enjoyed God s great outdoors including many spectacular sunsets over Oklahoma s Grand Lake. This concluded the 2017 Area 1 Friendship Campout;, a prayer was said for everyone that included a plea for everyone to travel safely to their next destination. Area 6 Friendship Newsletter We had 24 rigs and one visitor rig at the Area 6 Friendship Campout. I would like to thank AR 1, Belle Point Sams, Thundering Sams, Second Chance, Dorcheat Sams, Whispering Pines Travelers, and we kept a La Petite Roche chapter alive with 10 new members!. We had a really good time. The first night we had 3 of the biggest pizzas ever. There were 52 slices on each; all was eaten except 20 slices. Second night we went to JJ Café where the offering was fish, hamburger steak, pork chops, chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, and peach cobbler. And James had made one of his famous peach cobblers, and John Moore had brought some Black Walnut ice cream. The third night the park fed us Ham, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, bread and tea. All the meals where great. And thank you to everyone who provided food for us. I would also like to thank Camping World, Moix, Gwatney, RazorBack Campers, and Paul Michaels for the Prizes. Gwatney furnished us with ice cream on Wednesday afternoon and ice cream sandwiches after Bingo Thursday night. We played 5 tournament games. Next year we will be going to Texarkana RV Park, Texarkana, TX. September deepart the 14. Please call for reservations then call Girtie to let her know that you will be there There will be more information about what to expect closer to time. Again, thanks to everyone who attended; I hope you all had as good a time as I did. Girtie VanHoveln

2 FROM THE DIREC- TORS Hello to all. It s been a very busy 2 months. Our LR Camping World had an awesome Chili Cookoff. Thank you Camping World for giving us the opportunity to participate. This is a great way to meet new, prospective members. Thanks to those who helped: Nibletts, VanHovelns, and yours truly. Can t forget the Fall Rallys. Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma were awesome, and we enjoyed all our Directors meetings where we worked on ideas for upcoming Rallys. So very proud of the close connction we have with each other. On an unfortunate note, we are saddened of the passing of Dudley Wells, Merle Mennenga and Norma Williford. All will be dreadfully missed. We hope you all have had a wonderful summer. A lot of our members will be traveling to South Texas and other points South soon. Be safe on the road. Look for some good entertainment and, as usual, keep your eyes open for new suggestions for future Rallys. All suggestions are gratefully appreciated. Until then, keep up the good work all of you chapters do and have fun doing it! Bill and Dee For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 AREA 1 Bella Vista Traveling Sams Bella Vista Belle Point Sams Ft Smith Jolly Rogers Sams Rogers Bella Vista Traveling Sams met Friday, September 22nd. The next camp out will be Sunday October 22-25, 2017 for the annual cleanup at Devil s Den State Park. Monday, September 18 th Belle Point Sam Chapter members attended the September Campout/Meeting at Natural Falls State Park. Eventually the Chapter President got everyone's attention and called our meeting to order. Once our meeting was concluded and the 50/50 winner proclaimed, we headed to Kansas, OK to the Harvest House Restaurant for our dinner. Tuesday morning sewing machines, irons & ironing boards, scissors, thread, etc. were brought in to the meeting room and 25 pillowcases for AR Children s Hospital were constructed. The ladies completed their Charity project by noon. Everyone gathered back in the meeting room by 5:30 for a delicious meal of Crock Pot Pot Roast with sides/desserts followed by fellowship and games. Wednesday wasn t complete without a visit to the Casino nearby! Thursday morning some members arrived safely at Cedar Oaks RV Park, Grove, OK; checked-in, got set-up, registered and got our itinerary for the Fellowship Campout. Page 2 Arkansam News 2017

3 Paulette s Palette Our part of Iowa had its first snowfall on October 30. That made the weather pretty cool for the little goblins who were trick or treating on Tuesday night. They were out in force, though, with about 125 of them coming to our door! Little Debbie cakes make the best treats and Arnie gets to finish the leftovers! Our State Treasurer tells me that she has received dues and rosters from about 90% of the AR Good Sam chapters. If you haven t submitted your dues and current roster with 2018 chapter officers noted, please do so quickly. State dues are $10 per member rig. Please make your check out to AR Good Sam/Treasurer and include a copy of your updated roster. Mail to Peggy Bundy, AR State Treasurer 11 Summerset, Cabot, AR (501) bobandpeg@cebridge.net I have not received nearly that percentage of updated rosters. Please help Peggy in her job and me (or snail mail) a duplicate copy of the updated roster and officers to the address below. Our lovely Marie Hopson was featured in Motor Homes of Texas Magazine. Check out the excerpt from the magazine on page 4 and go to the magazine website for the complete article. This issue of the Arkansam News has 2 new advertisers: Muncy Industries (page 19) and Breck s RV Park & Country Store (page 10). Advertisers in this newsletter as well as the listing on the arkansasgoodsams.org website pay for their spot which benefits AR Good Sams. If you get a chance to visit one of them, please mention their ad. Please take note of the updated 2018 South Region Rally schedule. Included for each state is the Rally theme. Check out the unusual, imaginative titles on page 9. With the Nov/Dec issue of this newsletter I will again post the chapter officers as I have them and hope this will benefit each chapter making it easier to make arrangements to interact with each other and enjoy joint campouts, meals, etc. Good Sams is about helping each other. Not necessarily aid, but sharing of experiences! REMEMBER! Our Park Host coordinator Bob Lomax has an article next door.thanks to all who participate in this one-of-a-kind program benefitting all park visitors. Arkansas can be proud of this service! Our address for snail mail is PO Box 54, Britt, IA is redhead.smith2002@gmail.com. You can also call me at A Note from the Park Host Coordinator 2017 has been a busy year for Peggy and me. Many of our hosts have had health issues, and many of you have filled in for them. After calling people, it is refreshing to have someone say, Yes, we can go. All three parks have expressed their appreciation for the help provided by our hosts. We appreciate that so much. In addition to making sure all the parks have a host, we have collaborated with Bill and Dee to create some Park Host guidelines. Those will be shared at a later time. We are beginning to work on the 2018 list. The permanent people will remain on the list unless they request to be removed. If you know that you will not be able to continue as a host, please contact us as soon as possible. If possible, an would be great. We keep notes on all contacts whether by phone or . This is a valuable asset as we begin the process for We will fill those spots with as many of you who do not have a slot or have only one. After that, we will contact others as it becomes necessary to fill in. Thank you for supporting us in this new adventure. It has been an exciting time for us. The Rally Room is really a 3-bedroom house with a full kitchen. All the sites are paved and level. The staff was very nice; they had signs displayed welcoming us; and, as a result, we had a lady contact us wanting information about joining our chapter. I gave her information about our remaining campouts and will be sending her next year s schedule. They arranged a tour of the Bad Boy mower plant, and the guys all came back with new caps and told stories about others ordering a new mower to be delivered the next week. We also tried out the Fox Creek BBQ restaurant; it is in the old train depot downtown. The food was very good and the wait staff was friendly. Our own Marie Hopson featured in Motor Homes of Texas Magazine. Information for the park is: Brecks RV Park and Country Store, 897 Batesville Blvd, Batesville, AR 72501, phone Consider this an advance publish of the 2018 Camping Schedule (subject to change): April - Rally at Texarkana May - Dam Quarry? May you find smooth roads and level sites. Jo Ann Marie tells everyone her love of camping and traveling started at a very early age. My daddy, mother, brother, sister and I made a trip from Glen Rose, Texas to the Arkansas River Valley near Russellville in the early 1950 s. The joy of weekend getaways and peace of mind the great outdoors offered was something my late husband Jimmie and I were both passionate about. Marie says the more you travel the more you will see. At other times we visited Fowler s in Dardanelle, Stoby s in Russellville, and Catfish N in Dardanelle. We lingered when we got the chance visiting and enjoying the bug free, air conditioned, cushioned seats until more people started coming in then we relinquished our table and headed back to our rigs. We contributed to a Walmart gift card for some Harvey refugees that were staying at the campground. It was heartwarming to see their reaction to the gift. While there we learned that the Lund s daughter and her family survived hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, and they will be relocating to Fayetteville. We look forward to having more rigs and friends present at the next campout at Lake Catherine for our workweek October We have a few sites available still, so if you d like to join us contact Doug Tinkle November 9, 2017 we ll be eating at Home Plate Café in Hot Springs Village at 11am. We gathered again later in the day and visited some more. Since we couldn t have a campfire due to the burn ban we all went in for the evening when the sun went down. On Tuesday afternoon the rangers gave the guys a job washing the trash-cans and cleaning fire pits. The ladies picked up trash. 9 AREA 6 (continued) Eleven rigs from The Whispering Pines Travelers met at the Pecan Grove RV Park in Lake Village for the Area 6 Friendship. There was a total of 25 rigs present by Friday night. We got to greet old friends and make new ones. Tom and Girtie provided pizza, salad, and dessert Tuesday night. Those were the biggest pizzas I have ever seen! Wednesday morning included sweet rolls and coffee. After an afternoon filled with activities, we went to JJ s Restaurant for a buffet dinner of fried chicken, catfish, ribs, salad, vegetables, and dessert. Can you imagine how much food was consumed? We had been waiting all day to enjoy it. Thursday morning the guys cooked bacon, sausage and pancakes for all of us. As always, they did a fantastic job. We really look forward to that meal. We were divided into two teams for a rousing game of Beanbag Baseball. Our team was very respectful and did not make a lot of noise, but the other team..! Guess which team won? That afternoon we had the Chinese auction, live auction, and silent auction. The live auction consisted of the men bidding against each other to raise the price. At one point, Duke was making all kinds of motions, and Gene thought he was bidding. Barbara was getting upset with him. Another time, Bob and Ed had a bidding war over a pair of chairs; but everyone enjoyed it. The park staff prepared a delicious meal of ham, sweet potato casserole, creamed corn, green beans, and rolls for all of us followed by desserts made by participants. We played bingo after dinner. We each paid $1 per card, and each bingo was for $10 except the last which was a cover all and was $20. Several of our members won. Barbara won the cover all game. Friday morning found everyone packing up to travel home. It is always a little sad when it is over. Our chapter was well represented and welcomed A. W. and Jolly Martin into our membership during our business meeting. Texas (School Colors) Louisiana (What to do with the Chicken After You Catch It!)
