The city was named after Kit Carson and hit its stride with the Comstock Lode silver mine. Today, Carson City is the capital of the State of Nevada. Had enough riding? Take the train! The historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad still operate out of Virginia City. History buffs can take in both the Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railway Museum. Visit the Manzanar Historic Site. In 1942, the United States government ordered more than 110,000 men, women, and children to leave their homes and detained them in remote, military-style camps. Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps where Japanese were interned. The Devil s Postpile National Monument is home to large areas of columnar basalt and Rainbow Falls.
