2 FROM THE DIREC- TORS It has been a busy month for us. First of all, as many of you know, we had a New Year s Day gettogether here at our house with mostly Arkansas One members that turned out to be a very big surprise birthday party for Bill. We had a wonderful time with 26 friends and, of course, plenty of food and fun as always with this bunch. We ve been busy getting most everything done for our Rally in April. With the help of JD getting the programs all finalized and David & Brenda Miller helping with folding them, we got all finished. Thanks guys; this is how our great staff works together!!! Again, I m not going to take too much time for small talk; Paulette does much better than me getting all important news to you. So see ya next time around. AREA 1 Bella Vista Traveling Sams Bella Vista Belle Point Sams Ft Smith Jolly Rogers Sams Rogers Twenty-nine members and guests of the Bella Vista Traveling Sams held their monthly meeting January 10 at Gusano s Restaurant. V-P Tom Ogburn called the meeting to order volunteered hours for 2018 had been sent to Arkansas State Good Sams. Some of these volunteered hours included helping: Courtesy Van driver, Meals on Wheels, Crystal Bridges, Bella Vista Community Band, Veterans Home and Bella Vista Historical Society. Don Cowell led in a short memorial for Bob Mathis who died December 23 rd. The Bella Vista Sams have lost two members in The next meeting will be February 14, Big Whiskey Restaurant, Bentonville at 11:00a.m. Belle Point Sam Chapter members attended the January Dinner/Meeting at Roma Italian Restaurant, Ozark, AR. We gathered in the Restaurant s back room and visited for a while. As the food was served the room grew quiet; and by the number of to-go boxes at the end of the meal, I d say everyone enjoyed their dinner. After the meal the Chapter V-P got everyone s attention and called our meeting to order. Next month s dinner/meeting is February 12 th at 1:00 p.m. at Vapapas Mexican Grill. Iris Schroeder asked that members call to RSVP. A total of 29 Jolly Rogers members met at Golden Corral for breakfast. The yummy food and warm greetings from friends brightened the cold, rainy day. The room was full as you can see from the photo. Two members were honored with recognition for attending ALL meetings of They were Julie Hearron and Leroy Bolinger. We were presented with some new shirt samples with our logos on them and lots of opinions and questions were had. A motion and vote were taken to create a new Office of Chaplain for our meetings. Dorothy Tackett, who is our great servant of prayers, was elected to the new position. Bill and Dee Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalms 90:12 We completed our collection of school supplies which were taken to local schools by Laye and Kathy Bennett. We are beginning a baggitt ministry to collect toiletries for an April hand out to needy charities. A total of $ was distributed to three charities in December: Sheep Dog Impact Assistance, NWA Women s Shelter, and A Place to Call Home. We look forward to the upcoming March meeting at Golden Corral with the Bella Vista Traveling Sams Chapter. Games and good food will be on the agenda as we did this last year. 3 Paulette s Palette I heard by the grapevine that Bill Nery had a surprise birthday party that was worth waiting 80 years for!! The year s first Friendship Campout will happen in March. Its time to break out the camper and get the wheels to rolling. If you haven t before, try camping with another chapter or visiting a meeting. The Friendships are posted on the front page of each month s newsletter, and they re all listed on the calendar on page 4. Add something new this year. The April Rally schedule is in this Newsletter. While it s subject to change, it s pretty well finished. There s MORE ACTIVITIES, MORE ENTERTAINMENT AND MORE FOOD! Don t forget to read the schedule!!!! While actual hosting will not begin for a few more weeks, be sure to check the schedule for this fun service we do for the 3 state parks: Bull Shoals, Lake Catherine & Petit Jean. Park Hosting weeks have been increased. If you re new and this is something you d like to get involved with, it s necessary that you attend the Park Host seminar at the Rally where you can sign up and learn more about what Park Hosting is all about. For those who are old timers, be sure to let the Lomax s know your needs for name tags and bars which will be presented in April. It s not to late to let Bill & Dee know if your Chapter will be having a milestone event and should be recognized at the April rally. Please notify them by mid-march so that they can make sure you re recognized because you deserve it!. It s so sad that again this year we ve lost some of our Good Sam friends. Each chapter is encouraged to have a memorial set up on the table for those who have passed. Each loss will be recognized at the Memorial Service on Sunday morning. Again, our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones and are struggling with grief, those who are caring for loved ones with medical problems, and those who themselves feel overwhelmed or forgotten. Love is around you, and we hope you can feel it! Paulette AREA 2 Arkansas Roadrunners Diamond City The Arkansas Roadrunners met at Jamies in Harrison on Jan 7th. Present were Becky Myers, Helen Mennenga, Dorothy Leeman, Jerry & Peggy Chopp, Alma Lee Snow & her daughter, Jim & Charlene Rhoades. Great fellowship was had by all. Sorry that Connie Gerg was not feeling well and was unable to attend. The campouts planned for 2019 are the AR Rally and all Friendships as there is only one Roadrunner with a camper. Helen Mennenga Secretary Sugar Loaf Sams Greers Ferry On Dec 3rd Sugar Loaf Samshad their Christmas party at Cindy s Sweet and Eats, and our installation of officers for There were 11 rigs represented, and our guests Bill & Dee Nery. Our out-going President Pat Smith passed the gavel to our incoming President Reba Wallace. After our lovely luncheon, Bill Nery did an awesome job of installing our officers. We played Bingo and there were great gifts for the winners. Glenn Wallace won the door prize, dinner for 2 at Bentleys Restaurant in Greer s Ferry. We also played Left, Right, Center before adjourning to go to Rochelle McElwee s home to continue our games and munching on the left overs and delicious desserts. The Galewski s could not attend the party because they were closing on a new home in NW Arkansas but they did make it back in time to go to Rochelle s home. Thank you, Robin for the wonderful work you have done on the Sugarloaf Sam s scrapbook. Reba planned a great Christmas party and many thanks to Rochelle for her help, and for her graciously opening her home for more fun and games (the card and pen with Sugarloaf Sam s inscribed is so nice, too). It was great to see everyone. Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR. I promise Spring will come: Sometime! AREA 3 North East Arkansas Travelers Pocohontas Delta Sams W. 6 AREA 6 Whispering Pines Travelers Members of Whispering Pines Travelers met this month at Barnhill Buffet for lunch and a business meeting. We watched the snow flurries as we dined, were glad it didn t stick and missed everyone who could not attend. Our 2018 projects have been delivered and were eagerly received. Our crocheters are going to continue to make baby hats and blankets for 2019 projects. Jeanette reported that pop tabs were low the past year so she is going to carry them over for Here are other tabs that can be collected. Tabs of drink cans; soup, vegetable, pet food, and tuna cans; or any other aluminum can with a tab. To test tabs use a magnet; if it does not stick to tab, it is pure aluminum. Our Wagonmaster shared information for the Altus Winefest campout. We found a Corp of Engineers Park on Lake Dardanelle. It is called Aux Arc RV Park. It is rather large and right on the river, has really nice sites and is mostly shaded. Sites are well spaced apart and easily accessible. Here is the address & phone number for the park: Aux Arc RV Park, 1314 Aux Arc Park Rd, Ozark, AR 72949, phone From Ozark take SR-23 for one mile and a half to SR- 309 and turn left. Follow signs to the park. Evidently, this park is very busy during the season, so they ask that you call 2 months in advance to make sure to get reservations. They will not hold sites for a group. Make a reservation in Loop B, sites These are 50 amps and along the waterfront. Be sure to add this to your calendar. CANDIDATE PROFILE BOB & LISA DUCKWORTH Lisa and I are asking for your support in the election for the State Director of the Arkansas Good Sam. We have been married 27 years, have three children, ten grandchildren and are about to have our third great grandchild. Truly, we have been blessed. In 2005 we became life time members of Good Sam and members of Whispering Pines Travelers. As members of this chapter we have each held various offices. We have been Park Hosts for 13 years, having met many of our Arkansas Good Sam chapter members and love every minute of it! Why do we want to become Arkansas State Directors? At the beginning of this year we began traveling with the current State Directors, Bill and Dee Nery, to learn more about what is expected of Arkansas State Directors. First and foremost, after being appointed State Member Recruiting and Retention Coordinators, we see the need to build our membership program, the need to seek camaraderie in Arkansas chapters and strongly continue working closely with our South Region counterparts. We would like to provide other members with the same positive experiences we have had with our Good Sam family. Friendships have been made that will last forever. We have had the desire to become State Directors for some years but found it necessary to retire before reaching for this goal. Lisa and I are both now retired after 23 years service in the USAir Force. To complement this experience, we also volunteered for 10 years as first responders for our Tri-Community Fire Department. While fulfilling my USAF Guard and Reserve duties, I served as a Firefighter/EMT with the City of Little Rock for 30 years. Next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 13 at Golden Corral, 1:00 pm. See you there! Lisa was a Unit Education and Training Supervisor in the USAF and is also a published author. Her writings include a Technical Manual, True Crime genre short stories, publishing her own cookbooks and researching family genealogy. With this being said, we feel we have the ability to serve you in the position as your State Directors.. This is a lot of information to digest, but we wanted you all to know who we are. Should you have any questions we are always available to talk ( or ); or, if you have recruiting/retention questions, we can also be reached at arkgoodsamrr@gmail.com. In the position of Directors, we understand that we would serve at the discretion of our Good Sam family. Should you decide to choose us, it would be our privilege and honor to serve you. Thank you for your support. Page 6 Arkansam News 2019

7 Big Pine Sams Dorcheat Sams Rough and Ready Sams AREA 4 Derrick City Sams Good Sam Mallards Second Chance Sams Derrick City Sams The Good Sam Mallards gathered at noon on Jan 16, 2019 at the EL Amico Mexican Restaurant in Hazen. After the meal members made the short drive to the Murray s house for dessert of apple pie and ice cream. It was very good and finished filling us up. Doyle had another commitment; so that left the five of us to play a game of spinner dominos and a couple of innings of baseball (cards). The business meeting was called to order by President David Murray. Prayer was given by Pat. Pizza Classic in Hazen was chosen for our February 13th eating meeting. There was a scheduling conflict for our March campout at Cloud Nine. We will now be there February 28-March 3. April will take us to the Rally at Texarkana and Area 4 Friendship is May 1-4. Pat Collier gave the Treasurer s report which was approved. December minutes were also read and approved. With no further business at hand a motion to adjourn the meeting was passed. 8 Arkansas Veterans Sams AREA 5 Queen Wilhelmina Sams Mena Melon City Sams Hope Eight rigs represented the Melon City Sams at the campout which was held at Cypress Valley RV Park near Jefferson TX. The clubhouse at the park has been ideal for our group, as there is plenty of room to meet and play games, a separate and well-equipped kitchen for preparing meals, and a front porch made for sitting and visiting; and we utilized all of it! A brief chapter meeting was held before the Thursday meal. In new business, a motion was made and seconded to pursue the tradition of donating to Hope in Action food pantry in partnership with Save-a-Lot Grocery in Hope, AR. As in the past, our chapter will donate $ which will be matched by Save-a-Lot. Other charitable donations include Christmas cards and lap blankets for our local nursing home residents, and children's clothing for the Hempstead Closet. A lively game was played which consisted of attempting to unwrap a large parcel covered in clear plastic in order to get at various objects and cash. The "catch" was you had to use oven mitts and the person next to you was rolling a pair of dice which, if they landed doubles, ended your turn. AREA 6 Arkansas One Central La Petite Roche Little Rock River Valley Sams Russellville Rock City Sams Little Rock Spa City Sams Hot Springs Thundering Sams Benton Whispering Pines Travelers Jacksonville Arkansas One La Petite Roche. River Valley Sams Rock City Sams The Spa City Sams met at Home Plate Café on January 17, This is one of our favorite spots because we know the food is good as is the service. We always enjoy the private room they offer so we can have a meeting as well. Everyone got caught up on their holiday events and shared news of new additions and losses since the last meeting. Vice President Colleen Lund held a short meeting after we all had lunch. Mainly we discussed the 2019 camping schedule and reservations. After the meeting, everyone went out to the parking lot to meet the new Chatham family member, Baxter, and to introduce him to Trulee Vicious Shearer. There were many other visitors to the group while we were there. Dogs really do attract nice people! That s all the news for now. As we start our camping in March there will be a lot more to share. 12 Guidelines for Park Hosting: A park host must belong to a Good Sam chapter which has at least two campouts/year. Each park host must attend the AR State Rally in Texarkana at least once every two years and register for the full rally. A park host should support their chapter, area friendships, state rally, state park superintendents, park rangers, the staff at the visitor/registration center, and the park host coordinator. When park hosting, the host should follow the procedures set by the park. Each park is unique. If you are not sure, check with the staff at the registration center. Park hosts who are presently on the host list will remain until they request to be removed, the superintendent requests they do not return as a host, by the state park host coordinator, or by the state director. There is not appeal for the above. Other appeals will go through the state park host coordinator, and will be reviewed by the state director. In the event a park host asks to be removed or if they are removed by the above, that host must contact the Park Host Coordinator as soon as possible, and the Coordinator will find a replacement either to fill in or on a permanent basis. When a new park host is assigned to fill in for a permanent spot, they will be paired with an experienced park host when possible. If a park host indicates a certain park, then they will only be called to fill in or for a permanent spot at that park. No change of dates will be made to the park host schedule except by the Park Host Coordinator. If a change is needed, contact the Coordinator. A revised park host list is sent to each park and to the newsletter editor every month. Procedure for obtaining a substitute: When the park host coordinator is called that a host cannot fulfill his assigned date, the coordinator uses a spread sheet which has a list of all the eligible park host with their location, whether they presently have a hosting spot, how many times they are hosting, and in which parks they want to host. Those people without a permanent spot will be called first. If there is no answer, a message will not be left since time is of the essence regarding finding a fill-in. If you decline, the next person will be called. A date and the reason for declining is noted on the above spreadsheet as well as typed on a word document to place in the notebook. It is possible that people could be called before finding someone to take that spot. If all the people who do not have a spot decline or do not answer the phone, then those with only one spot will be contacted. If that doesn t result in an acceptance, a person with two spots will be called. We have added two weeks at the beginning of the season and two weeks at the end at each park at their request. At the present time, we have 35 two-week spots with a three week spot after the rally and at the end of the season for a total of 37 at each park. (During the season, we use 37 park hosts at each park, totaling 101 park hosts.) Page 12 Arkansam News Did you know Reservations in Missouri State Parks can be made six months in advance and Arkansas State Parks can be made a year in advance. Attention Veteran Sams chapter members: Please plan to attend Area 5 Friendship in Texarkana March at Cloud 9 RV Park. Phone , $21.55/ night+tax.
