Waco Mammoth Natioal Moumet is oe of three ew atioal moumets aouced by Presidet Obama o July 10, 2015 that help tell the story of sigificat evets i America history ad protect uique atural resources for the beefit of all Americas. The moumet will be maaged by the Natioal Park Service i cooperatio with the City of Waco ad Baylor Uiversity. The other two sites Berryessa Sow Moutai Natioal Moumet ad Basi ad Rage Natioal Moumet will be admiistered by the Bureau of Lad Maagmet ad/or USDA s Forest Service. The area i Texas provides a rare chace to uderstad ad iterpret the behavior ad ecology of the extict Columbia mammoth. The oldest fossils idetified at the site are thought to be more tha 65,000 years old. I additio, both the excavatio area ad the lad aroud it offer a excellet opportuity for further exploratio ad paleotological ad geological research. The will coduct a maagemet plaig process, workig closely with its two parters, commuity residets ad other groups that have devoted themselves to preservig the site for may years. The Natioal Park Service is proud to work i partership with the City of Waco ad Baylor Uiversity to protect, preserve ad, most importatly, share the remarkable Waco Mammoth Natioal Moumet with the America people ad visitors from aroud the world, said Director Joatha Jarvis. The Waco Mammoth Natioal Moumet will egage studets, visitors ad scietists alike with the story of these extict mammoths. As the Natioal Park Service prepares to celebrate its ceteial i 2016, this ew additio to our Park Service family will help more Americas develop lifelog relatioships with parks as places where they ca discover amazig thigs. A uique public-private partership has blossomed i the Califoria desert over the last decade that has led to the federal acquisitio ad permaet preservatio of over 15,000 acres of private i-holdigs across the vast ladscapes of Death Valley NP, Joshua Tree NP ad Mojave N PRES. The parks ad preserve were established uder the Califoria Desert Protectio Act of 1994, but i the years that followed, appropriatios for lad acquisitio did t always arrive whe ladowers wated to sell or whe critical habitat was threateed by developmet. Eter the Mojave Desert Lad Trust (MDLT). Fouded i 2005 by cocered local citizes, MDLT s missio is to acquire critical habitat for permaet preservatio i the Mojave Desert, a eed that caot always be met with public dollars. MDLT wet to work securig private fuds from philathropic foudatios, oprofit orgaizatios ad idividual doors ad by 2006, had acquired its first property for giftig to the. Eight years ad 234 trasactios later, MDLT has trasferred, mostly by doatio, over 15,000 acres to the, ad more is o the way. As of Jauary 2015, MDLT held over 10,000 acres i the three desert parks ad plas to covey all of them to the over time. I 2011, Secretary of the Iterior Salazar called for a collaborative, ladscape-scale proposal to idetify critical iteragecy lad acquisitio eeds i the Mojave Desert, usig the Lad ad Water Coservatio Fud (LWCF) as the fudig vehicle. I fiscal year 2014, Cogress recogized the eed with a LWCF appropriatio of $2.3 millio to acquire lad at Joshua Tree ad Mojave. Most of the lad idetified for acquisitio is owed by MDLT. Pacific West Regio s (PWR) Lads Divisio is workig to purchase over 100 tracts from MDLT at market value. The well-established collaborative relatioship that PWR Lads ad MDLT ejoy greatly facilitates the trasfer of these critical lads to federal owership ad protectio. Sice August 2014 aloe, the PWR Lads Divisio has fialized the acquisitio of 11 tracts cotaiig approximately 200 acres withi Mojave N PRES. There is oe other beefit to this public-private partership all proceeds from the sale of MDLT s lads to the will be used by MDLT to purchase more i-holdigs from willig sellers i the three desert parks. Now that s a ivestmet ay public-private partership would evy. Kigs Cayo NP marked its 75th birthday i O March 4, 1940, Presidet Frakli Delao Roosevelt siged legislatio creatig Kigs Cayo NP. The ew park ecompassed 454,000 acres of pristie Sierra Nevada wilderess. Kigs Cayo NP absorbed lads that were oce part of Geeral Grat NP, which was established i 1890 ad abolished upo desigatio of Kigs Cayo NP. It was quickly expaded by presidetial proclamatio to iclude Redwood Cayo ad its magificet giat sequoia groves. Largely forgotte is the 60-year struggle at the tur of the 20th cetury to create the park. Powerful hydroelectric iterests from Los Ageles were battlig irrigatio ad agriculture iterests from the Sa Joaqui Valley for water storage ad diversio liceses i the Kigs River watershed. Early assessmets prepared by the Federal Power Commissio showed the potetial for 19 dams ad reservoirs o the south fork of the Kigs River. History came alive at the Fifth Aual Everglades Natioal Park Vitage Day o March 7. Over 50 voluteers ad six paid staff brought to life the dreamers ad schemers who left a legacy o Everglades NP s ladscape. Oe highlight was a political speech by early 20th-cetury Florida Goveror Napoleo Boaparte Broward, who promised to save the Everglades by draiig them (portrayed by Chief of Resource Educatio ad Iterpretatio Ala Scott). Coservatioist Marjory Stoema Douglas (portrayed by Katy Dimos) provided a rebuttal with the perspective of time ad called for restorig the Everglades water flow. Other voices from the past icluded Semiole leader Osceola, railroad tycoo Hery Flagler, author Zora Neale Hursto, coservatioist Arthur Marshall ad martyred bird warde Guy Bradley. Also o had were farmers, scietists, gator poachers, lad speculators, workers from the Civilia Coservatio Corps, Cold War-era soldiers, coservatioists ad early park ragers. More tha 40,000 people gathered at the foot of the Edmud Pettus Bridge ext to the Selma to Motgomery NHT Iterpretive Ceter for the bridge-crossig Jubilee (held from March 6 through 9) to commemorate the 50th aiversary of Bloody Suday, a watershed momet i the civil rights movemet. Local, state ad federal officials atteded a ceremoy commemoratig the aiversary. O March 7, 1965, hudreds of me, wome ad childre attempted to march from Selma to Motgomery to protest Jim Crow laws that restricted Africa Americas from registerig to vote. As the protestors crossed the bridge from Selma ito Dallas Couty, they were met with a wall of state troopers ad a posse orgaized by Dallas Couty Sheriff Jim Clark. Officers ordered the participats to disperse ad retur to their homes or their churches. The officers ad posse the beat the protestors with ightsticks ad cattle prods ad dispersed them with tear gas. Kalaupapa NHP hosted two Harpers Ferry Ceter coservators i March, Curtis Sulliva ad Theresa Voelliger, to coserve a umber of sigificat objects. The Bishop Home crib is the last oe i existece ad serves as a powerful remider of this story. Kalaupapa s museum collectio, first maaged i 1987, cotais over 364,000 objects ad archival documets, primarily represetig the late-20th-cetury experieces of residets withi the Kalaupapa Settlemet. As with ay tropical eviromet, the threats to wood, metal ad paper objects are great with heat, humidity, salt air ad termites. This project is the first of its kid at Kalaupapa as part of efforts to mitigate these threats. The Border Patrol s Ajo Statio has icreased the size of its Horse Patrol Uit (HPU), resultig i more horseback patrols through Orga Pipe Cactus NM ad less use of motorized patrol vehicles i the park wilderess. The uit uses wild horses captured o Bureau of Lad Maagemet lads. Dick Rig Just before the ed of 2014, Natioal Park Trust (NPT) received word of a extraordiary bequest of $500,000 from Joh Michael Kauffma, a logtime NPT supporter. Joh passed away peacefully i November 2014 at the age of 91. He served for may years as a park plaer for the. I that role, he assisted i the establishmet of Chesapeake ad Ohio Caal NHP ad Cape Cod NS. I 1972, the relocated Joh to Alaska to study areas uder cosideratio for desigatio as atioal parks, moumets ad reserves. His work cotributed to the passage of the Alaska Natioal Iterest Lads Coservatio Act (ANILCA), permaetly coservig more tha 100 millio acres. Accordig to E&AA Life Member Dick Rig, NPT s park projects director, who served as the first superitedet of Gates of the Arctic NP & PRES, Joh s extraordiary visio ad isight led to the creatio of the park as the coutry s bechmark wilderess. Thompso, a close colleague of George Wright, was a Uiversity of Califoria biologist. I the 1930s, he accompaied George Wright ad Joseph Dixo o the first wildlife surveys of the atioal parks ad subsequetly helped to establish the program of Biological Research ad Maagemet i the. E&AA Life Member Mike Soukup, director of sciece at the Schoodic Istitute at Acadia NP ad member of NPT s Leadership Coucil, stated, Be Thompso was a pioeer i establishig the essetial role for sciece i protectig park resources while makig them accessible to the public. Thompso uderstood early o that atioal parks must develop a professioal level of uderstadig of their resources i order to achieve that difficult missio. E&AA Life Member Deis Galvi, former deputy director, added, Thompso made substatial cotributios to Missio 66, a decade-log (1956 to 1966) program that is remembered for its comprehesive rehabilitatio of the ifrastructure of the atioal parks. This work resulted i a atioal Keep America Beautiful Award for the orgaizatio ad persuaded the State of Mississippi to be the first state to eact legislatio to protect the marie eviromet from dumpig trash withi state waters. I the early to mid-2000s, Gail s duties were heavily focused o recovery projects related to the damage to three visitor ceters from Hurricaes Iva ad Katria. For her work, she was hoored with the Sequoia Award i Durig her career, Gail also worked at Pea Ridge NMP ad Big Thicket N PRES ad served as actig superitedet of Abraham Licol Birthplace NHP. She was superitedet of Little River Cayo N PRES ad Russell Cave NM for over two years. E&AA Life Member William N. Bill Black, superitedet, Ozark NSR, Ja. 3 after 40 years. Bill graduated from Purdue Uiversity with a degree i wildlife maagemet. He bega his career as a seasoal park techicia at Cumberlad Gap NHP, followed by a seaso at Castillo de Sa Marcos NM. He also worked as a assistat wildlife refuge maager with the Fish ad Wildlife Service i Florida ad Alabama. Bill s first permaet appoitmet was at Great Smoky Moutais NP as a law eforcemet rager. He wet o to become admiistrative officer at Chickasaw NRA ad a few years later, moved ito the admiistrative officer/assistat superitedet positio at Isle Royale NP. I 1992, Bill became superitedet of Fort Smith NHS. Durig his 20 years here, he was istrumetal i revitalizig the park. Our goal was to make Fort Smith oe of the best small parks i the System, ad I like to thik we accomplished that through the work of a great staff of dedicated employees. He served as superitedet of Ozark NSR sice Lookig back o 40 years, I have fod memories of chasig bears, shootig caos ad all the other crazy thigs we did, he says.
