1 CENTENNIAL WOOD BADGE PHILMONT Day Three Issue The Official Newsletter of Wood Badge Course BSA-18-2 BSA G IL The Mysterious Migration Has Returned Yesterday, at Gilwell Field, a strange migration of critters was seen. All of the neighbors were very concerned. They have never experienced this type of activity before. Another gathering of these critters were observed again today. The Philmont Neighborhood Watch group is perplexed. Phones are ringing constantly. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are all very active. Numerous, unnamed, sources tell us they are concerned with the possibility that these critters may cause damage to their property and automobiles. Calls have been made to the local animal control as well as legal advice from Judge Judy. All of the car wash businesses are on standby and traps are being set. W EL L G A Z E T T E January 2018 Volume BSA-18-1 Issue 4 The Woggle In 1920 s the scarf, which had always been tied with a knot, was held by a scarf slide. So far as it is known, the name woggle was invented by Gidney, the first chief of Gilwell. Baden Powell suggested to the Gilwell staff that they experiment and produce a special scarf slide to go with the Gilwell Scarf. In the early days of leader training, fire lighting by friction was very much a novelty, and for many years was demonstrated with a length of leather thong. Using one of the fire lighting thongs, Bill Shankley, who was at the time serving at Gilwell, produced a two-strand Turk s head slide that was adopted as the official woggle. This year, we add Cub Scouting to Sea Scouting, Exploring, and Learning For Life, as one of the Boy Scouts of America's co-ed programs. It was this flag that flew over Fort McHenry the memorable night of its bombardment by the British in 1814, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write the verses of our national anthem. The actual flag that few over Fort McHenry that night is now preserved in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. OUTDOOR CODE As an American, I will do my best to: BE CLEAN IN MY OUTDOOR MANNERS. I will treat the outdoors as a heritage. I will take care of it for myself and others. I will keep my trash and garbage out of lakes, streams, fields, woods, and roadways. Scouting is a game for boys under the leadership of boys under the direction of an adult. ~ Baden Powell BE CAREFUL WITH FIRE. I will prevent wildfire. I will build my fires only where they are appropriate. When I have finished using a fire, I will make sure it is cold out. I will leave a clean fire ring, or remove all evidence of my fire. BE CONSIDERATE IN THE OUTDOORS I will treat public and private property with respect. I will use low-impact methods of hiking and camping. BE CONSERVATION MINDED. I will learn how to practice good conservation of soil, waters, forests, minerals, grasslands, wildlife and energy. I will urge others to do the same.

3 News From The Roost Bobwhite Patrol On Tuesday, great leaders stood up and sat down again. General chaos harmonized into splendid collaboration, a proud flag, many lessons learned, touching moments, and lots of fun. Random thoughts: Pete L: FUN! Phil J: The PTC reports several items missing from the tool shed : a pair of binoculars, a multitool, a mirror, and a paper cup telephone. Trip R: Very educational Jeff H: Nobody goes there anymore, it s too crowded! Jeff C: Wait, but I still go there! Ruben H: Building friends for life Eagle Patrol The Eagle patrol has been soaring through this Wood Badge course at the snow covered Philmont Scout Ranch. The eagles are an EDGEy group led by Nick Orcutt today (fun fact, he has an amazing tattoo of the Tooth of time on his arm). The Eagles are FORMING a Patrol Flag that they will use in STORMING the headquarters of the Buffalo Patrol on Day 6 of the course. These kinds of raids are NORMINGly looked down on but since this is a Pilot course, the staff is looking forward to the eagles PREFORMING this PLAN WITH A BIAS FOR THE ACTION against the Buffalo. In preparation for the raid, the patrol practiced first aid and LEARNed TO LISTEN to each other then LISTEN TO LEARN from each other. Other preparations include DEVELOPING INDIVIDUALS and coming together to DEVELOP the TEAM. The Eagles are also selling TICKETS to other patrols to watch the demise of the buffalo patrol.

4 News From The Toothed Fox Patrol Rumor has it that the fox patrol knocked it out of the park last night at the campfire. Now that we all know what the fox says, the fox patrol is looking forward to getting down to some serious Wood Badge business. The foxes are foraging around the PTC for tid-bits of wisdom for their tickets this afternoon. After some good work on these goals, the patrol is looking forward to some of the other fun activities at PTC today, like a tour of the beautiful Villa Philmonte, or a quick pass through the Tooth of Time trading post to get some goodies for their Fox dens back home. Bear Patrol The Bear Patrol, once set free to build their newton car, put their project planning skills into practice. They used SMART GOALS and objectives to identify challenges and solution to make the car go furthest. The team worked together in the performing stage of development to achieve this success! Beaver Patrol Through the fog our tickets slowly emerge. With an active day we completed our patrol flags, totem and a newtonmobile to race with the best of them.

Backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades, and training and service programs offer young people many ways to experience this legendary country. More than 700,000 Scouts, Venturers, and leaders have experienced the adventure of Philmont since the first camping season in Throughout its existence, conscientious attention to low-impact camping techniques have helped maintain the ranch s wilderness flavor. The Philmont Training Center (PTC) has served as the national training center for the Boy Scouts of America since The PTC provides a unique environment for the training of volunteer and professional leaders. Each year, more than 6,000 Scouters and family members attend PTC. It is the PTC which hosts our Wood Badge course. Leave No Trace Plan ahead and prepare. Travel and camp on durable surfaces. Dispose of waste properly. Leave what you find. Minimize campfire impacts. Respect wildlife. Be considerate of other visitors Actions Always Speak Louder than Words... Actions always speak louder than words... and your attitude is contagious. Baden-Powell also said, "show me a poorly uniformed troop, and I'll show you a poorly uniformed leader." Remember that the way you present and conduct yourself will be reflected by your Scouts. Quote of the Day: No kind action ever stops with itself. One kind action leads to another. Good example is followed. A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.
