2 P A G E 2 G I L W E L L G A Z E T T E Scouting and Ecology G G r e e n b e f o r e G r e e n w a s C o o l Since it s infancy, the Scouting movement has taught responsible stewardship of the environment and wildlife conservation. Much of this started with the ideas of naturalists such a Earnest Thomas Seton who s writings greatly influenced BP. Seton and BP actually met exchanging ideas in BP went on to found the world scouting movement while Seton, who had started a youth organization called the Woodcraft Indians in 1902 later merged his group with the Boy Scouts of America and became the BSA s first Chief Scout. Another early conservationalist who greatly influenced Scouting was Dr. William T. Hornaday. He devoted his life to the crusade of wild life protection and was an outspoken champion of natural resource conservation and a leader in saving the American bison from extinction. Dr. Hornaday was the author of the 1929 BSA Bird Study merit badge book and wrote articles for Boys Life Magazine. In 1914 Dr. Hornaday created an award to recognize those that have made significant contributions to conservation. He named the award the Wild Life Protection Fund medal. In 1938 after his death the award was renamed the William T. Hornaday Award in his honor. Dr. Hornaday, along with Ernest Thompson Seton, are among a very select group of people enshrined in the National Wildlife Federation Conservation Hall of Fame. The development of good citizenship has been one of Scouting s aims. As such, it teaches that citizens need to practice sound environmental living and conservation of natural resources. This emphasis is directed toward making all who are active in Scouting youth, adult members, and their families aware of their responsibilities for the future. One of the ways this is accomplished is through Outdoor Programs (one of Scouting s methods). Boy Scouting is designed to take place outdoors. It is in the outdoor setting that Scouts share responsibilities and learn to live with one another. Being close to nature helps Boy Scouts gain an appreciation for the beauty of the world around us. As part of the Good Turn for America initiative, a national call to service by the Boy Scouts of America, thousands of Scouts and volunteers from more than 300 councils across the country, complete conservation projects such as planting trees, recycling, trail restoration, litter and garbage cleanup, removal of invasive plants, and clearing creeks and streams of debris. This is all inspired by their dedication to the Scout Oath and Scout Law. In a very conservative estimate, since 2004 more than 384,000 Scouts and adult volunteers have given more than 1 million Good Turn for America service hours on conservationrelated projects. Another example of how Scouting serves to promote awareness and understanding of conservation as a wise and intelligent way to manage natural resources happened last summer. The BSA s national honor society, Order of the Arrow, partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to conduct its largest service project since World War II ArrowCorps5. Thousands of Arrowmen from around the country contributed more than 280,000 man-hours of service, resulting in more than $5 million worth of improvements, conservation, and construction work at five national forests. In addition to ArrowCorps5, in 2008 the BSA entered into a partnership with the National Park Service to work cooperatively to reach youth and new audiences through environmental education and volunteer service at national parks, recreation areas, historic sites, and monuments. They will support the Good Turn for America initiative so that more Scouting youth members, families, and adults will be better trained in the responsibilities of good citizenship and will contribute to the conservation of national parks.

3 G I L W E L L G A Z E T T E P A G E 3 The Outdoor Code As an American, I will do my best to - Be clean in my outdoor manners. I will treat the outdoors as a heritage. I will take care of it for myself and others I will keep my trash and garbage out of lakes, streams, fields, woods, and roadways. Be careful with fire. I will prevent wildfire. I will build my fires only where they are appropriate. When I have finished using a fire, I will make sure it is cold out. I will leave a clean fire ring, or remove all evidence of my fire. Be considerate in the outdoors. I will treat public and private property with respect. I will use low-impact methods of hiking and camping. and Be conservation minded I will learn how to practice good conservation of soil, waters, forests, minerals, grasslands, wildlife, and energy. I will urge others to do the same. World Conservation Award The World Conservation Award is issued by many of the national Scout associations affiliated to the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). WOSM is the Nongovernmental organization which governs most national Scouting, with 28 million members. The World Conservation Award was created in conjunction with the World Wide Fund for Nature. This fund is an International nongovernmental organization formerly named the World Wildlife Fund, which remains its official name in the United States and Canada. The award was created partially in response to the rise in popularity of Green Scouting. Since the 1980s, self-styled Green Scouts have appeared in several countries, related to the Environmental movement and in some cases linked to Worldwide green parties. Different countries have set different standards or criteria in order for Scouts to receive this award: Cub Scouting: by earning the Forester, Naturalist, and Outdoorsman activity badges and taking part in a den or pack conservation project. The Cub Scout World Conservation Award uses the panda emblem on a gold background with a blue border. Boy Scouting: by earning the Environmental Science merit badge, either Soil and Water Conservation or Fish and Wildlife Management merit badge, and Citizenship in the World merit badge. The Boy Scout World Conservation Award uses the panda emblem on a tan background with a tan border. Venturing: by earning the Ecology elective of the Ranger Award The Ranger Award is an award available to youth in the Venturing program. It is designed to encourage youth to become proficient in outdoor skills and by showing and teaching about environmental relationships. The Venturing World Conservation Award uses the panda emblem on a yellow background with a green border. The award is worn centered on the right pocket of the uniform shirt as a temporary patch.

6 P A G E 6 G I L W E L L G A Z E T T E Critter Corner Beaver A woggle of Beavers descended on Gilwell. They brought a shower of hail with them. After an evening snack of microwave popcorn they beaverishly worked on crafting their new flag design. It has been rumored that the Beavers have been eaten by the Owls. These are unfounded, and greatly exaggerated. We were welcomed by getting leis and providing beaver leavings for the troop flag. Enjoyed an afternoon of games and team building. Bobwhite The Bobwhites have successfully flocked back to Gilwell and settled back into our perch. We have soared through change and diversity to accept the challenge of carrying all three balls with the flock, secreting messages across enemy lines, and practicing the art of a nail bridge. It was quite a sight to watch Bobwhites attempt to wade across a downed bridge or pass over lava-covered ground. We are used to flight but adapted nicely. It is very exciting to look forward to an evening of great entertainment without the fear of snow. So watch for Bobwhite tracks making their way to the evening campfire. On April 11 th members of the Fox Patrol returned to Happy Land to dig the post holes necessary for the split rail fence. 12 or 13 holes were prepared in record time less than 2 ½ hours. We celebrated our accomplishment over a world famous long horn burger at the Meers Café. What a great day it was. On April 23 rd the Patrol arrived back at Happy Land with a new sense of purpose, organization, and joy to be together again. Final preparations were completed for the Friday evening campfire program. We hope that you enjoyed the program as much as we did. What a great day it was. Owl Dateline: Gilwell Field, 2 pm Yesterday the Owl Patrol unveiled their new owls only verse to Back to Gilwell for the entertainment of the assembled scouts of Troop One. The melodic cries of the voracious Owl Patrol echoed over Gilwell field and were met with general approval- and some nervousness among the Staffers. To no ones surprise- the Owls had two Staffers for lunch yesterday. Eagles Editors Note: The Gilwell Gazette editorial staff all have expressed having an eyrie feeling that his space may be populated by soaring prose in the future. Foxes The Fox Patrol met on April 9 th to complete the design of our patrol presentation. The four stages of Team Development were utilized flawlessly to develop a presentation that we hope you will find to be inspiring and useful. What a great day it was. 7 G I L W E L L G A Z E T T E Did you know Earth Day (April 22nd) was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. In addition to scouters Hornaday and Seton, other notable honorees of the National Wildlife Conservation Hall of Fame are John James Audubon, Jacques Cousteau, Henry David Thoreau, and president Theodore Roosevelt. There are at least 19 ecology related Merit badges Archaeology, Astronomy, Backpacking, Bird Study, Camping, Energy, Environmental Science, Fire Safety, Fish and Wildlife Management, Forestry, Geology, Insect Study, Mammal Study, Nature, Oceanography, Plant Science, Reptile and Amphibian Study, Soil and Water Conservation, Weather. P A G E 7 Each Summer at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, more than 22,000 Scouts and Leaders participate in twelve-day backpacking treks across Philmont. As part of the trek, each participant is asked to give back three hours of service to the improvement of the Ranch. This amounts to about 66,000 hours each summer. The projects have included meadow encroachment, small diameter timber thinning, stream improvements, new trail construction, trail maintenance, campsite development, invasive plant species removal, and fire rehabilitation. The mighty beaver is a revered creature in Canada (is that true Bruce?) It must be as evidenced by the Giant Beaver Statue in Beaverlodge, Alberta Canada. The sculpture is 15 feet high, 28 feet long and weighs 3000 pounds....and of course the beaver holds a place of honor in Beaver Oklahoma, which is famous for holding the annual World Cowchip Throwing Contest. This statue which is hauled down main street during the contest celebrates both of the town's claims to fame.
