2 September, 2003 Court of Honor Famous Sayings Peace is not the absence of war; it is a virtue; a state of mind; a disposition for benevolence; confidence; and justice --Spinoza Name this State Flag. Troop 69 recently held its quarterly Court of Honor. There were over 30 merit badges and about 10 rank advancements awarded. The SPL (Brandon Stone) and ASPL (Nick Johs) did a very nice job running the meeting and awards. Mr Metge gave a recap slide show which is currently available on the website. Pictures from summer camp were available ($5) - contact Mr Stone if you want a copy. He probably still has some. Philmont was discussed and money is currently due (~$275) for those scouts who are going to be 14 years old. Famous Sayings A mathematician is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat which isn't there --Charles R. Darwin Which Merit Badge is this? Page 2 Scout Tips Knife Tips Do: Keep the blades closed except when you are using them. Cut away from yourself Keep your knife sharp and clean. A sharp blade is easier to control than a dull one; a clean blade will last longer. Close the blades before you pass a knife to someone else. Don't: Carry a knife with the blade open. Cut toward yourself. If the blade Quiz Show Unlike most other fish, sharks have no: A) Bones B) Teeth C) Gills D) Liver slips, you may be injured. Pound on a knife handle or blade with another tool. The knife may bend or break. Throw a knife. Pry with the point of a cutting blade. It can snap off. Put a knife in a fire. New knife blades are hardened, or tempered, with just the right amount of heat. Reheating them may ruin the temper and weaken the knife. Name That Knot What knot would you use around a post or through a ring or grommet? A. Clove hitch B. Timber Hitch C. Bowline D. 2 half hitches

3 Arapahoe Rendezvous This year s Arapahoe Rendezvous will be Oct at Ben Delatour Scout Ranch and will be at Camp Ruth Coffin. Activities will include a cooking contest and Civil War Reenactment (??). There will also be the usual cast of activities such as rock climbing, hatchet throwing, and shooting sports. This is the place where Troop 69 took first place and served about 40 folks for lunch! Here is a picture from last year. The scoutmaster is searching feverishly for his tiara! Two reasons for the Scout Merit Badge Plan are 1) to give you more skill in the things you like to do; 2) to give you a chance to try out new activities, so that you can find new things which ;you really like. -Baden-Powell KNOTS!! Arapahoe Rendezvous #2 What: Arapahoe Rendezvous (fall fun weekend for Scouts) When: Oct 10-12, 2003 Where: Ben Delatour Scout Ranch, Camp Ruth Coffin How Much: ~$15 for food. Troop pays for scout activities When we ll leave: 5pm from Hut on Friday Oct 10th Purpose of Boy Scouts The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America, incorporated on February 8, 1910, and chartered by Congress in 1916, is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness. When we ll return: ~noon on Sunday Oct 12th Directions will be on the website soon! Hot Chili, anyone? Page 3

4 3rd Flatiron Climb Popcorn Fundraiser Scouts from the troop climbed the 3rd Flatiron overthe last weekend. Led ably by Curt Lehman and Ralph Tavino, the 13+ year old scouts used semi technical climbing techniques to achieve this feat. It has been called the finest beginner climb in the US. Troop 69 is selling popcorn by Trails End Company. Dates will be from ~Sept 28 to Oct 29. In contrast to the Gold C books, the scouts are get to keep their share of their sales which amounts to about 35% of total sales. This goes into a scout account and which the boys can use for scout activities (camp, gear, etc). Mrs Haas has further details. Go Big Sellers!! Philmont Adventures 2004 Troop 69 has managed to secure two crews for the summer of Age requirements: be 14 by Jan 1 of year attending OR complete 8th grade and be 13 during year of participation. Currently, there are 9 scouts and 7 adults that have expressed interest in going on the trek. Dates: July 15th 27th, 2004 Cost: $475 per participant. Note that we may go down a day early and spend a nite in a hotel near Philmont. (cost for hotel ~ $25/ person). Payment Breakdown: $50/person due Aug 15th, 2003, $212.50/person due Oct 15th; balance due April 15th, Page 4 Merit Badge Classes Update The scouts will have opportunities to spend some of their time on Monday nights learning and earning merit badges. What merit badges do you want to earn? We will be reviewing what merit badges troop scouts think would be best to start working on for the next few months. One idea from a parent was to have a binder with merit badges in progress for each scout. If all the adults were signed up for each required merit badge, then the requirements would get signed off a bit quicker. What do you think?. What would you like to accomplish by the next Court of Honor?

5 BSA Troop 69 - Louisville, Colorado BSA Troop 69 Louisville, CO Phone: Fax: bikedog@usa.net Web Site for Troop 69 by Luc Trudel Troop 69 now has a new web site at The web site is a free service of Yahoo. Combined with the web site is a group address that enables anyone in Troop 69 to all the members of the troop (adults and scouts) using a single address: Troop 69 Archives This is a new column to give us all a flavor for the history of Troop 69. It is the oldest troop in Louisville and has been around since the LATE 1950 s. Hey, what about this picture? bsat_69@yahoogroups.com Scout Slogan: Do a Good Turn Daily On the Web!!! The only drawback to the site is that to log in you'll need to create a Yahoo account if you don't already have one (there's gotta be something in it for Yahoo...). To use the group you do not need to become a Yahoo member. The webhead maintains this official website: is the official posting location for all documents. At present, we are only using the yahoo site as a State flag : North Dakota Quiz answer #1 Unlike most other fish, sharks have no: A) Bones A shark's skeleton is made of cartilage, a material somewhat softer and more flexible than bone. The correct knot for to form a loop that will not close would be D, a two half-hitches. Merit Badge:? Cooking MB Brandon, Wyler, Nick & Dan at the Louisville Labor Day Parade.
