Will be sending in the EIF. The date is June 12-14th. Really no conflicts for that weekend with other groups. Kingdom Arts and Sciences: Set for March 6-7th. Looking to have a fighters practice in the parking lot at the event. Officer Reports: Baron and Baroness: They will be going to 12th Night. Taking Knights Auction donations. The Baron declares there will be war with Lyonsmarche for not paying taxes (see insert in The Word). April 3-5 will be Baroness War. Ashbauch Park. Has a receipt for the box for the Silver Fox award. 4 Youth Armored Combat: NTR Mistress of lists: NTR Captain of Wastekeep Archers: There will be a range set up at Springfest. There will be shooting this year. We will try for a Tuesday night practice at 6:00pm. Then we can go from there to fighters practice. Will also try to make a weekend practice for those who can not attend the weekday practice. Those will be based on what people are doing. Heavy Marshall: Still having quite a few heavy fighters at practice. Chatelaine and Gold Key both open positions. Please contact the Seneschal if you are interested in one or both of these positions. First aiders: Going thru the box and replacing supplies. Bring any outdated materials to the council meeting and Roth can take them down to the shelter for donations. The kit is in the baronial trailor. Grete Boke: NTR Librarian: Will be having a inventory party on January 23rd. Looking to do a mix with the Heralds. Arts and Sciences: NTR Fools Guild: Building new props. Will be making new costumes. Having practice every other week. Ithra Chancelor: Marcia turned in a list of movies that she personally owns. Check the boxes on 4-5 movies that you would like to see. Marcia will bring the popular choices and set up a movie room at A &S. Canton Business: Svala has stepped down as the deputy seneschal. Svala will be the new exchecquer for the Canton. Lothar is the new deputy Seneschal for the Canton. The Scribe is working on the Ratatusk scrolls. To The Populace and Allies of Wastekeep, a call to Arms!!! Be it known that the College of Lyonsmarche, having long enjoyed the peaceful and prosperous protection of the great Barony of Wastekeep, has willfully ignored their sworn fealty and been found guilty of the most grievous offense, failure to pay taxes. This year, another bountiful lentil harvest has been proclaimed by the citizens of the College, yet where ist he required tithe of lentils? To further add to the insult, a commissioned review of the Grete Boke reveals that there has not been a tax payment from Lyonsmarche since AS XXXIII and the reign of HM Brendan Shimmeringstar. A proper and courteous request for back taxes has been rebuffed most shamefully and there is a report that the cowards have turned to our misled cousins in Wealdsmere for succor!! The Baron of Wastekeep therefore, exercising his crown-given rights, calls forth the warriors of Wastekeep. All friendly Knights, Sergeants sworn in service, archers, sappers, engineers, skirmishers, artisans, teamsters, suppliers, cooks, and assorted camp wenches are hereby summoned to the Gate of Hell itself (Hellsgate State Park) on the weekend of April where King Vik and Queen Inga shall, in person, bear witness to this redress of grievances. This is always a joyous occasion especially since the outgoing royalty planned such a festive final court. With our fealty renewed, I have confidence that our Kingdom will prosper. I was please to present the beads that Phelan Tolusmidr made. All went for a high price during the auction. I have to admit, I tried winning one of the strands myself and was disappointed when another person out-bid me. I had a bid of $100 in and they refused to give up. Phelan s beads and Styrkarr s rawhide sword together raised about $500 for Syr Brand s charity auction! The Baronial donation to the Raven Travel Fund was much appreciated. Our Barony now has 3 red ribbons to hang in honor of our gift. While the weather is still cold, I encourage our people to come together and share in our indoor activities. February 1 st all are welcome to my house that would like to make award necklaces. On the 15 th, I request that the Pages and their sponsors attend a meeting at my house to start them on the road to completing their challenges. We hope this to be a fun event. 7 FESTIVAL OF RED LANTERNS Shire of Dregate February 28 th 2009 Okanogan County, WA. In the Month of the White Moon, cold is the temperature outside. Deep is the snow. Chill is the wind. Yet the Sound of Laughter rolls from the encampments of Dregate. The smell of fine foods and good drink pierce the winter air. The red glow of the lanterns radiate across the lands beckoning all travelers into the warmth of the great ger where we celebrate the end of the Chinese New Year. Join the Shire of Dregate at winter s end as we celebrate the Year of the Ox, beginning with the Dragon s Dance! Bardic competition will be held during the finest feasting in the known world. I was pleased to see Mairghread and Roth s table at 12 th night for advanced sign-up of this event. It is time to call all of our fighters to the battle field. I look forward to the sight of our opponents as they come to the battlefield shaking in their armor. It is the time to form alliances with our neighbors to win the Baroness War in my honor. (We are not above bribery!) I look forward to seeing my sergeants joining together with our brave knights to wage war on our upstart countrymen. Indeed, April will bring another war, Honor War in Lyonsmarche, soon after Baroness War. We will have those lentils! If not for feeding our people and creating strange craft projects, then for the principle of it, and the fun of hitting each other with sticks! 8 Cave Dwelling Medieval Dragons of the Middle Ages In Europe, during medieval times tales of terrifying fire-breathing dragons grew far and wide, and have stirred awe and terror in the myths and legends of many cultures ever since. In Western myths, the European dragons, or Medieval dragons, and as they are often known: draco, are generally portrayed as terrible, evil, and dangerously fierce carnivorous reptiles with wings and a tail for added balance. This colossal magical beast has the ability to fly and simultaneously breathe fire to wreak havoc on numerous villages of the Middle Ages. Western Medieval dragons can be categorized by their peculiarly unique physical characteristics, general appearance, and habitat (or dragon liar). During the renaissance period, and according to Western folklore, Medieval dragons have a longstanding association with magic, and they are left with the job of guarding and watching over hidden treasures and fortunes! Western Medieval dragons have an attraction and association with gemstones and probably live in caves in order to give them the best access crystals and cool underground temperatures. Dragons have also been known to use deep lakes to hoard piles of golden treasures, jewels and other precious items kept in the depths of their draconian lair. What Led to the Downfall of Dragons According to the mythology of dragon lore, knights of the Medieval times had to protect their kingdom and their elaborate Medieval castles from fierce and menacing dragons by the tradition of fighting and slaying the dragons to not only protect their Medieval culture, but also to capture their hidden and protected treasures. Knights of the round table were eager to prove their faith and would battle dragons to the death. Medieval dragons would also take women, especially young women of the child bearing age and royal bloodlines. Occasionally, dragon monsters would wander into villages, and leave great destruction and death in their wake. This led many a brave knight to attempt to hunt down and slay dragons, as recounted in many medieval writings of the middle ages. In some cases, Medieval knights were successful, in many other situations they were defeated by the immense power of dragons! Even with a slim chance of winning a battle with a fierce fire-breathing dragon, knights soon discovered that dragon-hunting and dragondefending was very profitable and would bring them plenty of fame and fortune. And so it wasn't long before most of the dragons throughout the world were destroyed, according to medieval folklore and legend. Wastekeep Trivia Can you name this blazon?
