2 SEPTEMBER 2014 FROM THE TOWER PAGE 2 Chronic Ramblings Greetings to you all, It is Spring! The weather is seeming to improve, and hopefully that makes for more outdoor practices from now on. This month is late due to Fimbulwinter, which has had positive reviews, so very much worth the wait. Next month I shall have a report and some photos for your enjoyment. No council minutes this month, double dose next issue. Canterbury Faire bookings have opened now, and that means we need to start looking in that direction, fixing ripped or broken items, making new garb, and of course booking. We have events to turn to also, Golden Flight and The Baroness Hunting Party. These are shaping up to be full of fun and should be worth going to. This would be a great time to think of any Christmas events that people may want to steward. Last year's revels were fantastic, and I would love to see one again this year. In any case, enjoy the weather, have fun and remember... Its only two weeks to Canterbury Faire! 3 SEPTEMBER 2014 FROM THE TOWER PAGE 3 Kingdom of Lochac King & Queen: Lord Niall inn Orkneyski & Lady Liadan ingen Fheradaig Please send award recommendations to crown@lochac.sca.org with a courtesy copy to B&B@sg.lochac.sca.org Additional information can be found on the Kingdom website: Their Excellencies Speak Unto the people of Southron Gaard do Oswyn and Isabel Maria send greetings. We hope this finds you well and safe and that your stores have lasted through to the spring that is newly come. Oswyn has vexed our Chronicler most unfairly with the lateness of this epistle. It was not written until after we returned from Fimbulwinter in Wildmoor this past weekend. We were very glad to have gone. We were honoured to be joined by a substantial contingent of people from Christchurch. It was a relaxed and most pleasing event. The venue was impressive and set on beautiful grounds. We encountered new faces as well as those who have served and been part of the Dunedin group since the days of St. Kessog. We were given fine meals, and bidden to sampled wares gifted to the event by local brewers - ciders and stouts, lemonades and beers. We were also plied with excellent rich cheeses. So pleased were we with their efforts that we appointed Leonhart cheese maker to the Barony. with meat and drink, we would have been impressed with the courtesy of the people of Wildmoor who attended and who worked so hard to bring the event to pass. We give our thanks to the steward, Gheleyn and Elias, and those who aided them. We are pleased to inform you that Baroness Isabel Maria was inspired to ask Bencelina to join her on Court as a Lady in Waiting. Additionally, Sir Philippe took Leonhart and Sir Callum took Elias as squires. This will strengthen the bonds between or groups. We hope that there will be protégés and apprentices in the future. Fimbulwinter has shown that Wildmoor can demonstrate great vitality and has some fine and talented people. It is our hope to see more of them and to be able to attend more events with them. We encourage you all to attend and see what Wildmoor has to offer. Throughout the two days and nights of the event, people were at liberty to practice their skill at arms and archery, play chess or dice, fight and work on their crafts as they pleased, or merely sit and talk. We were also treated to an entertaining and very silly play. Had even we not been so well supplied Yours In service Oswyn and Isabel Maria Baron and Baroness of Southron Gaard
4 SEPTEMBER 2014 FROM THE TOWER PAGE 4 Seneschal s Comments Greetings all, Having just returned from Fimbulwinter I d like to take the opportunity to thank Lady Gheleyn for stewarding an excellent event. It was a hive of activity for the entire weekend, with many hands involved in making the event a success. During the weekend I was reminded of the reasons why I like the SCA and think it has a huge amount to offer us as a group, in particular the culture of sharing knowledge rather than hoarding it, celebrating our achievements and abilities rather than ridiculing or suppressing them and giving us the opportunity to unwind in the company of friends. Sometimes I feel sorry for those people that are part of the SCA but don t really get it. It s so much more than a glorified costume party and I think those that take from it the values of courtesy, scholarship, selflessness and a pursuit of excellence are by far the richer for it. I saw so many examples of that at Fimbulwinter and it really was inspiring. Back to more mundane matters we do have a number of Officer vacancies which would ideally be filled. Lady Mahasti in particular is looking to step down as reeve soon and this is an office that absolutely must be filled for us to remain a group. We are also soon to be in need of a new herald and constable. Finally, while we don t technically require a captain of archers we are seeking 2-3 people who can reliably attend archery practices so that the gear can be distributed somewhat to ensure that there will always be sufficient targets to have a practice. We are still seeking applicants for the role of captain of archers though as this will certainly assist our marshal. If you are willing to assist with these offices or any others, please get in touch. Finally, thank you to everyone so far who has volunteered for jobs for Canterbury Faire. Organisation is proceeding well but as always more remains to be done. Specifically we are still looking for a Ball Organiser, a Kitchen Manager and a Cook for the repast. We also need more people to cook meal plan lunches and dinners. Many hands make light work, so please help to lighten the load! Regards. THL Richard d'allier Seneschal of Southron Gaard

10 SEPTEMBER 2014 FROM THE TOWER PAGE 10 Officer Appointments Several people have mentioned that the process of appointing officers could be better explained, so here is a quick guide to the process. There are a number of greater officers and lesser officers. The greater officers are the Seneschal, Herald, Marshal, A&S Officer, Reeve, Chronicler, Chirurgeon and Constable. The lesser officers are Lists, Hospitaller (Chatelaine), Archery Marshal, Rapier Marshal and Web Minister. There are a few others but these are not generally filled at the Baronial level. All officers serve a standard term of 2 years. As their term is nearing its end advertisements for a replacement will be made, typically on the SGAnnounce mailing list, and in From the Tower. Applications generally go to the Kingdom officer concerned and should be cc d to the Baronial Seneschal and Baron and Baroness. Baronial Greater Officers are warranted by the Kingdom Greater Officer. Baronial Lesser Officers are rostered by the Baronial Greater Officer concerned if there is one, otherwise the appointment is made by the Kingdom Lesser Officer concerned. If there is no Kingdom Lesser Officer concerned then the appointment is made by the Baron and Baroness. All appointments must be ratified by the Baron and Baroness. This means that for the most part the relevant Kingdom officer will determine which of the candidates will be appointed to the role. Once they have made their preliminary decision, the name of the intended successor will be published (on SGAnnounce) and a period of up to 2 weeks will be open during which time the populace (that s you) may send comments to the Kingdom officer about the proposed appointment. Comments should be made if you think there is a significant reason that the proposed appointment should not go ahead. At the end of the commentary period the Kingdom officer will either confirm the appointment or the application process will be reopened. A few of the Baronial officers don t have Kingdom equivalents, such as the Quartermaster and Minster for Children. These Baronial officers are appointed by the Baron and Baroness and don t necessarily go through the same commentary process. It has been suggested that if there is more than one applicant for an office then the names of all applicants should be made available to the populace so that they can comment on all of them. While there may be some merit to this, it is not currently part of the appointment process as it can (and has) lead to situations in the past where nasty or even abusive feedback may be made about some of the candidates. In order to avoid this, the vetting process in place allows the Kingdom officer to only advertise the candidate that is likely to be accepted by the populace and therefore hopefully will attract only minimal negative feedback. Also, the process of asking for feedback is not about voting for your preferred choice. Kingdom ultimately makes the choice as to who will fill the office, and the commentary period is to ensure that the proposed person is generally acceptable to the populace. Hopefully this demystifies the process a bit. THL Richard d Allier Seneschal
11 SEPTEMBER 2014 FROM THE TOWER PAGE 11 Have you written an award recommendation recently? Too often people who contribute much to the society are overlooked when it comes to recognition of their work. Sometime people assume they already have an award while others do not know that anyone can recommend people for awards. Please take a few minutes to write a missive to bring the efforts and skills of someone you know to the attention of your local Baron and Baroness, or the King and Queen of Lochac.
