Greetings to the wonderful and noble populace of Wastekeep, As I write this I am just completing a 2-week trip to Toledo, Spain. In the course of my current obsession with Renaissance armoring, I went to Spain to learn a 3000 year old technique that incrusts gold or other soft metals into steel. In Spain this is called Damasquinado de Oro. There are now only three major places in the world that practice this technique in some form or another. Two of these places are in Spain (Toledo and Eibar), and the other is Japan, though the results are quite understandably aesthetically different there. I first saw the technique in examples of gold-encrusted armor for European monarchs and other nobles. My instructor s name is Oscar Martin Garrido. He has been practicing Damasquinado for the last 23 years or so. He comes from a line of damasquinadores (job title) in fact his grandfather taught the man that taught him. The precision and detail in evident in their technique is quite remarkable. This close-up is from a small steel amphora damascened by another artisan I met, Antonia Sanchez. The art came to Spain through the Arab conquest of the peninsula but it is much older. There are examples of this technique known in Roman, Greek, and Egyptian works. Three major styles are currently used Arabic, Gothic, and Renaissance. Arabic is known for its intricate geometric patterns. Renaissance style is recognized as the most difficult style to master because, at its best, it involves remarkable three-dimensional details repousséed into the gold itself. Of course, as mentioned, being in Spain allowed me to research and view directly examples of my current passion, heroic armor. I confess to spending many hours in the Real Armeria in Madrid viewing, sketching, and taking a couple of clandestine photographs of some of the worlds most amazing armor. Of special interest to me were examples by Filippo and Francesco Negroli of Milan. The Negroli armor workshop is often considered to represent the peak of armoring beauty and prowess prior to the widespread use of effective firearms, which of course made armor less effective. I have included a superb example of Negroli s work in the Real Armeria the Masks Garniture, completed for Emperor Carlos V of Spain in Though only partially visible in this picture, this armor has superb examples of damascened gold work on virtually every piece of the armor. 4

The artisanal community in Toledo seems very close-knit and the presence of my helmet and gorget caused a really unexpected stir. We had to turn down many requests for showings just for purposes of limited time. There were some requests we could not turn down, however, such as one from Oscar s maestro, Mariano, and one of the two premier sword-smiths in Toledo, Antonio Arrellano. (Here is a YouTube piece on one of his exhibits: ). The general consensus was that prior to my visit they were not aware that anyone in the world could create a piece like the one I am currently privileged to be working on, and the fact that it was done by people outside of Toledo, and outside of Spain, was considered too impossible to believe without seeing first-hand. Many continued thanks to Master Ugo Serrano of An Tir for his unparalleled work. Despite the occasional break for some sightseeing or taking in some of the excellent Spanish food, the vast majority of my time in Spain was in the workshop. I spent almost 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, in the shop learning techniques. At the end I am exhausted, but I am very eager to be home and practicing these techniques and to share them with my SCA friends. I am very happy to share pictures and stories of the things I found and the techniques I learned at our house on Friday, March 7 th at 6pm. The populace of Wastekeep is invited to come see pictures, examples of the work, or just socialize. I leave you with a picture of Toledo taken from across the river Tajo, while standing on the Rock of the Muslim King. It s a sight that will live in my memory forever. Your exhausted and excited Baron, Styrkarr 5

End of Year 2013 Financial Report from the Exchequer Throughout the course of 2013, the Barony of Wastekeep's bank balance went down at total of $ But, during this time, we ran 2 Yule Feasts, a Springfest, a Baron's Ball and a Sergeants Trials. Ending balances for 2013 were $3, for the checking account and $5, for the savings." Here's a breakdown of the numbers for this year for those that are interested We made $83 in fundraising (mostly old library book sales), $ in direct contributions/donations (write off of old paperwork mostly), $ from events, $ was returned to us from the lawsuit fund, $5.00 moving money from the University of Ithra account, and we earned $1.07 in interest for our savings account. As for money out - $30 in bank fees, $501 in misc. fee's (permits, Ithra account activity, trailer tabs, and the Admin retreat in September), $ for food for all the events, $ in supplies (includes half of the new travel pavilion, new excheque laptop, event supplies, etc), $ in occupancy charges, $60 for shipping and PO Box, $77.48 in printing and publications, and $ in travel. We also paid 100 to the SCA for insurance and $880 for NMS (this year and two re-issue from previous years) and the donation we did to the Raven Travel Fund. As a reminder to all members, we're trying to get a little better with having the financial committee involved sooner in the financial decisions. So, for that, please remember to send an to "wastekeep-financialcommittee@googlegroups.com" about wanting to spend money outside any of the normal budget for your office, Any questions? Feel free to the exchequer at "exchequer.wastekeep@gmail.com" In Service, Thorkell Palsson New Location for Baronial Council in March Thursday, March 13th We will be trying out the Pasco I-HOP as a location for Baronial Council for the first time this month. We have the room starting at 6:00, so if you would like to order dinner, it would be great if you could arrive early. (The meeting officially starts at 6:30.) Since we will have to order at the table rather than at the counter as we did at the pizza place, the Chronicler would love it if early ordering can reduce the noise level to make it easier to take meeting minutes and conduct business. (Of course, we know that some work schedules might not allow early arrival, and we still want everyone to have a chance to enjoy dinner.) Thanks to Steinbjorn for doing the legwork to secure this new location. The I-HOP is at 5015 N Road 68 in Pasco. 9

Minutes of Wastekeep Baronial Council Feb 13th, 2014 Attendance: Steinbjorn, Ulrik, Thorkell, Gudrun, Marcia, Stjarna, Catriona, Dyon, Ysabella, Rowland, Isa, Inguz, Ciosa, Sunneva, Katherine, Tanya, Biggy, Chyanne, Phillip Approval of January minutes: Minutes were approved as presented. Old Business The banner poles and trailer locks we purchased are in Ulrik's garage. Poles have been stained. We won't put the new locks on until we decide where the trailer is going to be moved. Greenwood: Dyon has been collecting names of fighters who can help. He has lots of maybes, but is still not sure that we have enough to commit. Arts and Sciences: Dyon has helped work on some posters for the A& S demo, with different sizes for different uses. Marcia wants to have an activity for kids at the demo, and is thinking of the Animals from Vegetables activity often held at Baron s. She needs someone to run the activity. It would be something to keep kids busy. Biggie volunteered to work with this activity. Marcia would like to spend $30 on vegetables. This purchase was approved. You can get a poster from her if you want to put it up somewhere. Reports on Upcoming Events War in the Oasis: Ysabella is autocratting War in the Oasis, March 15, Ephrata s Oasis Park. They will serve food and water at the park. Phillip will be MIC. They hope to have YAC activities but haven t figured out when to fit it in the schedule. Steinbjorn wants to make sure that we have YAC at all Inlands major events so he will help coordinate. Gate will open at 9:00 fighting about 10:30. Ambergard would like to borrow eric stakes. The council approved the loan of the stakes. Iron and Ink: It is the last weekend in June in Moses Lake. Ysabella and her crew are trying to find people who have a Jambe who might like to display something about what they received their Jambe for. If you would like to teach something, please contact Mistress Morgaina. Springfest: June 20th to 22 nd at Sacagawea Park in Pasco. Ysabella requested $40 total for reservation fees for Baron's and Springfest. We also need $100 for the site specific insurance certificates for both events. It will cost $530 for up to 100 people. We will pay that fee after the event. The park will have a staff member there for the weekend. Last year s problems with the Haunted House held the same weekend have been addressed. We have to be off site by 6 on Sunday. Rapier will be moved to Saturday so more people can watch. Steinbjorn can't be there Sunday so someone else will have to run YAC if it is on Sunday. Zeke is going to be the feastocrat. Discover Pass can't be used instead of our Dragon Pass because it doesn t allow parking at night. Court will be before feast for at least the tourney Champions. Inguz will run the Archery. Newcomers: A class on basic costuming is planned for March 1st. It will be at Their Excellencies house. Rashida will teach the class and the library will be available. Inguz is willing to help with costuming too. It will begin at 11 and will include a potluck. Officer's Reports Seneschal: Ulrik got more information about the polling process when he was at Twelfth Night. Their Excellencies need to talk with the Crown officially. Then the announcement is made at a business meeting and applications are solicited from candidates. It should happen within one reign, but there may be some room for negotiation. The notice of the polling needs to run for 2 12

months in the Crier. Baron and Baroness: His Excellency will be in Spain until 2/25. He is studying Damascene techniques. Last dance through Parks and Rec. will be February 26 th. Teaching as a class through Parks and Rec has resulted in lots of forms to fill out every time. It is only $28.00 an hour for a non-profit to rent a room and have our own activity. People could throw money into the pot to help cover costs. They need the Seneschal to sign the form. Mostly it's our people. The council approved that we pay for dance space up to 90 dollars. She will talk with people about the dates. On another matter, we need to get the poles for the new travel pavilion. Steinbjorn will head up that project. Reeve: $ in checking and $ in savings. That does not include the money left from purchasing poles and locks. It does include the check for the travel pavilion. The check for the donation to the Ladies of the Rose hasn't cleared. Chamberlain: No report Chronicler: Nothing new to report. Web Minister: Nothing new to report. Herald: Heralds are getting together at Rowena's on the 22nd. Help on devices will be available and heralds will work on commentary. Chief Scribe: She was unable to attend but is busy working on scribal stuff. She went to a scribal class at 12th Night. Combat Marshal: He will be leave for Europe on March 16th and will get someone to be in charge while he is gone. YAC: He is now the Inlands YAC Marshal. Archery: Stjarna has not been able to get in touch with Bob for the arrow making class. Inguz is going to try to talk to people about possible times for a regular practice. The archery butts we talked about building may be cheaper to buy. Rowland has info he will forward to Ulrik. Chatelaine: Isa reported on a 12th Night Chatelaines meeting. Great brainstorming took place! Meetup.com is a site that some Baronies have used with good success. We would have to set up an unofficial Barony page. Interested parties could send an with a question but not make a post on the page. Posters would be good too. We voted to go ahead with Meet Up. Renaissance Fairs of WA is another site she will check out. Steinbjorn is stepping down and would recommend Isa as his replacement. It will be posted in the Word and we will vote at the next meeting. Greteboke: Nothing new to report. A&S: Her business was covered earlier in the report on the March 29 th demo. Family Activities Coordinator: She is out of town. She reported by that she has nothing new to report. Dean of Pages: Nothing new to report. Chirurgeon: Nothing new to report. Librarian: The library is in Her Excellency s basement. There might be still be some boxes that haven't gotten to her. Canton Business Next meeting March 3rd. If anyone wants to go to Feast of Fools, there are a group of them going. Next practice is Monday the 24th in Waitsburg. Next meeting March 13 th. Steinbjorn has made arrangements for us to try the Ihop on Road 68 in Pasco, so we will meet there. 13
