1 THE FORD RUNNING BOARD Newsletter of the Georgia Regional Group Early Ford V-8 Club of America Temporary Editor Lamar Hart January 2010 Our 41 st Year Charlie Adams Our friend and long time club member, Charlie Adams, has died. We will miss his smile and pleasant personality. Our thoughts are with his family. January 2010 Tour On Saturday January 23, there will be a tour of Historic Oakland Cemetery at 10:00 A.M. Richard Waterhouse, our tour guide, will lead a walking tour discussing the symbolism associated with decorations on grave markers, mausoleums, & memorials. Architectural examples include Victorian, Greek Revival, Gothic, Neo-Classic, and Egyptian. Oakland is the oldest cemetery in Atlanta, first opened in Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind, Bobby Jones, golfer, twenty five mayors, many of Atlanta s former leaders, and 3,000 unknown Confederate soldiers are among those buried there. The cemetery has always been a popular place for Atlantans to visit often on Sundays and that might include a picnic. This tour will last about 1 ½ hours and that might not be enough time. You can drive your old car since the cars will be parked inside the cemetery, where they will be safe. Plan to arrive by 9:45 A.M. Bring your walking shoes. There is a $5.00/person charge for the tour if you are over 65. The charge is $10.00/person if you are under 65. We will leave the cemetery and drive to Mary Macs Tea Room on Ponce Deleon Ave. for lunch. We have reservations for 12:15 P.M. for a delicious meal in very nice surroundings. The owners of the restaurant are always gracious and we will receive separate checks. Following lunch you may want to stop at the Krispy Crème donut factory, about 1 ½ blocks east, on Ponce de Leon. for some take home dessert. The cemetery is located across the street from the old Fulton Cotton Mills on Boulevard for orientation purposes. Directions to Cemetery: 1. From the south, driving north on I-75 or from the west on I-20 continue on I-20 East to Boulevard. Exit on onto Boulevard going north (left) to Memorial Dr. Turn left on Memorial Dr and drive to Oakland Ave. Turn right on Oakland Ave. to the entrance to the cemetery on your right. Turn right into the cemetery at the main gate and go to the first street on your left. Turn left and drive to the main building (sort of a castle) and park along the curb. Continued next page.
2 2. From the east, drive west on Ponce de Leon Ave or Dekalb Ave. to Boulevard. Turn left on Boulevard and drive to Memorial Dr. Turn right on Memorial Dr. and follow the instructions in #1 above to get into the cemetery and park. 3. For those who do not wish to drive alone, you can drive to our house at 2622 Arlene Way in Atlanta and we will caravan to the cemetery following Piedmont Rd., Monroe Dr., and Boulevard. You must arrive at our house before 9:00 A.M., as that is the time we will leave. Stragglers are on their own. Directions to Mary Macs Tea Room: We will turn left out of the cemetery onto Oakland Ave. Turn left onto Memorial Dr. and go to Boulevard. Turn left on Boulevard and drive to Ponce de Leon Ave. Turn left onto Ponce de Leon and drive to Mary Macs at 224 Ponce de Leon Ave. Turn right on Myrtle St. and park behind the restaurant. Annual Dues Treasurer Bert Steele is accepting dues for the 2010 calendar year. Please use the attached Membership Renewal Form when paying dues by mail or in person. This form really helps us maintain current and accurate records. Report On The Installation And Awards Banquet At the Saturday January 9 meeting the 2010 Officers and Board of Directors, were installed, and we recognized all those hard working committees that contribute so much to this club, and awards were made to two very outstanding members. The President s Award was presented to Jerry Reichel, and the Emeritus Award went to Fred Lindquist. Everyone seemed to have an uproariously fun time. Some of it was planned, much was not. Jerry Reichel provided a great deal of entertainment by swearing in the new Officers and Board using the wording from the National Club s ceremony, ending with So help me Henry. Attendance was very good in spite of freezing weather and the remnants of ice and snow. We had about 35 members and guest. J.R. s Loghouse Restaurant provided prompt and efficient service along with good food. Sunshine Committee Please contact Mary Ann Padovano if are any issues with a member s life or health. New Member Applications When you acquire a new member, please send the application and payment to our treasurer, Bert Steele. Also please try to include membership in the national Early Ford V-8 Club of America. The national dues are $35 including the V-8 Times or $10 without.
