1 THE FORD RUNNING BOARD Newsletter of the Georgia Regional Group Early Ford V-8 Club of America Temporary Editor Lamar Hart April 2008 From the President We are moving forward with our drive to recruit new members. Several of us have magnetic signs and fliers with applications and have attended a few of the early car shows. I am giving you a list of Antique Car Events (ACE) that we plan to attend. Jimmy Dorsey and I went to the Route 66 Restoration Cruise-In recently. There were probably seventy-five cars there, mostly street rods, but Jimmy s 34 Tudor and my 52 Victoria got their share of attention. A number of people stopped to talk and ask questions. We enjoyed the attention. The most memorable visitor was a member of the Georgia Street Rod Association. He was very enthusiastic about my joining his club. He told me it was a fun group of members with lots of family activities. Later, another member of GSRA came by and gave me a Membership Application and asked me to join. Now that s kind of effort we need to put into recruiting new members! To grow this club, we have to go to where car people are, and tell some of them what a great club we have. We certainly have friendly tours and a variety of family activities to offer. We just need to spend a little time talking to a few people we don t already know. It will pay off. By the way, I was sold. I joined the Georgia Street Rod Association. I have a special Running Board mailing list for prospective new members. If you give me a prospective member s name, street address, if available, and phone number, I ll add them to that list. This is one of the best ways for them to learn about our club. Future ACE Dates Here is a list of Antique Car Events where we would like to attend as a group and possibly recruit new members. Please try to join us if the weather permits. And please wear V-8 clothing. Sa. April 19 Tucker, Coffer Museum, 10-1, 3702 Lawrenceville Hwy. Sa. April 26 Cleveland, Car Show, 12-4, 136 N. Main St. Sa. 2 May Meeting Tuesday May 6, at 7:30 PM Tim Stewart Ford 5675 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard Chamblee, GA Please note that they are now located in Chamblee at 5675 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. This is about one mile inside I-285. The meeting will be held on the second floor of the building identified as Pre-Owned. Parking in front of the building where the meeting will be held is limited so you must park in the rear near the Collision Center. There are three entrances to Tim Stewart Ford on Peachtree Industrial Blvd. Enter in the middle driveway and drive back to the collision area where there is parking. Walk down the driveway from the parking area and turn right to the Pre-Owned building. There will be signs on the front and side doors directing you to the meeting area. Consider driving your V8 to the meeting. The dealer personnel are interested in seeing our cars. Peachtree Industrial Blvd. is well lighted and there is a turning lane in the middle of the road for easy access into and out of the dealer s lot. David Jumper is sponsoring this meeting. Starting this month, we will have a flea market table for you to sell some of your extra parts. You sell the parts and accessories and keep the money. The purpose is to add a little interest to your club meeting. April Outing Saturday April 19 th 10 AM. Cofer Car Collection 3702 Lawrenceville Hwy. Tucker, GA By Fred Lindquist Georgia Regional Group #24 will visit the Cofer Car Collection, Stable of Thoroughbreds, on Saturday April 19. Plan to arrive at 10:00 A.M. The building is located on the Lawrenceville Hwy, US 78, in Tucker. The building is a nonwindow cement block building behind a chain link fence. Porter Paint is located on one side and Auto Zone is located on the other side of the property. Its location is on the left as you are driving out of Atlanta (east) towards Lawrenceville. There will be one or more cars parked inside the fence so that you cannot miss the location. Drive through the gates and park in the parking area. The collection is large and there are cars to suit everyone s taste. We will spend two hours there at the Stable of Thoroughbreds. The group will leave at 12:00 P.M. driving to the City of Stone Mountain. We will have lunch at the Bakery at the Village Corner. Arrangements have been made for a separate dining area and separate tickets. The restaurant serves good lunches and great desserts. We will hand out directions to the Bakery at Cofer s Plan to attend, mark your calendar, check the fluids in the V8, and let s have a good tour outing. Please make a special effort to attend; you won t be disappointed.

3 April Outing Sunday April 27 th 12-3 PM Varsity Jr. Lindberg Drive at Cheshire Bridge Road By Fred Lindquist A Varsity outing has been planned for Sunday April 27 at the Junior Varsity on Lindbergh Dr. at the intersection with Cheshire Bridge Road in Atlanta. The time is from 12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. This is very informal and come if you can. It is a great opportunity to drive your V8 and have it admired by the public. You will have numerous opportunities to explain what your car is, how old it is, and as Morris Bailey is aware they might ask you if you purchased it new. The weather in April is great for an outing. Bring children, grandchildren, friends, and neighbors because everyone enjoys the Varsity even those folks from Wisconsin. Street rods are welcome to join in the fun. Saturday Night Social Saturday, May 3 rd at 6:30 PM Blue Ribbon Grill Tucker, GA First Saturday Each Month We have returned to the Blue Ribbon Grill. This popular V-8 family gathering is held on the first Saturday of each month; same time, same place. Drive your antique auto if you wish, there is plenty of parking. Bring your family and join us for some relaxed fellowship and good food. We look forward to seeing you there. Report On George Bugg Car Collection By Fred Lindquist The tour to George Bugg s car collection was scheduled without the knowledge of the tornado that came through Atlanta on the Friday night preceding the scheduled activity. Despite the bad weather on Friday night, three cars showed up at Cofers Crossing on Saturday morning. Lamar hart, David Jumper, and Fred Lindquist braved the weather to arrive. They left promptly for Athens and collected Randal Malone, Luther Garrett, and Doug Hollandsworth along the way. The group arrived at George s after some delay on the circumference road. The Stricklands, Neal Freeman, and Bill Swilley had arrived earlier. George was a gracious host sharing stories about his collection. Several of his cars were used in a recent movie that will be shown in July. George was cast as a Georgia State patrolman who investigated a murder in 1947 and his son had a part also. The group left about lunch time for Rafferty s. The restaurant was expecting the group and had a special area set aside for everyone to sit together. Following lunch, everyone decided that it was better to drive home because of the expected afternoon storms. George has a great car collection and all twentyeight enjoyed seeing it and having lunch.

4 Participants on George Bugg Tour: Luther & Peggy Garrett Neal & Emily Freeman Bill Swilley Brian Strickland & sons Noah & Aubrey Roger Strickland George Bugg Charlie & Jeanene Adams with son John David Jumper with Addison Vickery, David II & Jenna. Randy & Trish Barton Randall & Kay Malone Lamar Hart & Nancy Bireley Keith Strickland Fred & Katie Lindquist Doug & Elizabeth Hollandsworth Easter Parade Review Fred Lindquist Each Easter Sunday afternoon, one of five automobile marquee clubs sponsors the Easter Parade through Avondale Estates. This year the Horseless Carriage Club of America sponsored the parade. Early participants for the parade began arriving around 1:00 P.M. to get a front position in the parade. Unfortunately, the Avondale Estates police decided that was too early and shooed them away. They congregated at a local restaurant for awhile before returning. By 1:45 P.M., quite a few participants began arriving and the police just observed how nicely everyone lined up their cars in preparation for the parade activity. There were a number of outstanding automobiles for everyone s taste in addition to the sixteen vehicles driven by V8 ers. There was a quite large 1915 Packard Twin Six (V-12) with tires almost four feet in diameter. One couple brought their restored 1936 Durham bodied Cord cabriolet. Some worth mentioning were two brass radiator Ford Model T s, three Rolls Royces, three Cadillac convertibles including a beautiful red one, and a gorgeous 1936 Ford cabriolet street rod. It is worth noting that Jack Henry driving his Ford prototype (1940 Studebaker sedan) was quite stylish in his 1940 suit with brown & white shoes, which was appropriate for the period. The parade started at 2:30 P.M. led by the police through the Avondale Estates neighborhood. The weather was great for a parade and there seemed to be more adults with children viewing the parade this year. There were probably forty cars participating in the parade this year. The police blocked streets so the cars could travel unimpeded along the route. At the conclusion of the parade, the police led participants to the Avondale City limits and then a brass radiator Ford Model T touring car led the participants to Stone Mountain Park, almost getting lost (?) in the City of Stone Mountain. Everyone arrived safely, toured around the mountain and ended up at the Stone Mountain Antique Automobile Emporium for refreshments. A number of participants went to Applebee s on US 78 afterward for dinner and good conversation. This was a great day for a parade and everyone who turned out for it enjoyed it. Next year Regional Group #24 EFV8CA is the sponsor for the event so make your plans to participate. Consider wearing a period outfit appropriate for the year of the vehicle you will be driving to add some interest. Ladies, don t forget to wear an Easter Bonnet also. Let s put on a show.

The restaurant personnel were ready and set up a long table for the group. Two waitresses were assigned to take care of everyone. There were twenty one people to show up for this activity, despite at least four members who were in Charlotte with the raffle engine. Everyone ordered their meal and the service was very good. Interestingly, Roy Hatcher was the first person served, but everyone knows that is because Bob Padovano was there. Bob was served next to last, clearly following tradition. Mary Anderson was the last to be served, maybe starting a new tradition. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves that evening. There was good food and good conversation. If you were not able to come to the Blue Ribbon Grill, mark you calendar for next month, May 3 at 6:30 P.M. It is informal, the food is good, conversation is good (it is not all V8 talk), and everyone gets a separate check. It is a pleasant evening. Participants: Roy & Janelle Hatcher Bob & Ann Butler Bill & Allison Swilley Joe & Jean Smith Bert & Lorraine Steele Ken & jean Wills Dick & Mary Anderson Fred & Katie Lindquist Bob & Mary Ann Padovano with family members Robert, Debbie, & Stacy Thank you Morris Bailey and Rick Wilson We thank Morris and Lucile Bailey, Rick Wilson and their friends for hosting such a great meeting in early April. It is a real pleasure to meet in Morris old time garage and enjoy such an abundance of good food. This was the largest crowd we have had since Morris last meeting. Thanks to all who helped host the meeting.

The Board of Directors forwarded $ from the Engine Raffle Committee to the Early Ford V-8 Foundation. We have enough funds to send another $ but it would deplete our account.
