Fred Lindquist Reports of Events PEACHTREE DEKALB AIRPORT SHOW Club Secretary-Faron Stephens Good Neighbor Day at Peachtree-DeKalb Airport on Saturday May 17 th, 2014 was truly a wonderful event! The air show was incredible and the cruise in/ car show had a wonderful turnout with assorted vehicles. Although Peachtree-Dekalb Airport management only gave us three weeks to put this cruise in together, I was over whelmed with the response. As most of you know, I have been dealing with a serious foot infection which put me in the hospital and left me with limited mobility,: therefore putting this together was a true challenge. I was fortunate enough to have a good friend and co-sponsor of this event, Greg Banner. I would like to offer a special thanks to some club members which supported us by bringing their vehicles to the event! Jerry McIntosh; Nat McFarland and Jimmy Dorsey, your vehicles were awesome and much appreciated. I would also like to thank Joe Smith for dropping by and offering his support. It was wonderful to have all of your support, I would like to offer a great big thank you to Georgia Regional Group # 24. Click here for Event Photos: Page 9 Hickory House Breakfast Report-May 5, 2014 George Flanagan picked me up in the roadster right at 7 A.M. That put us ahead of the morning rush hour traffic & we arrived at the restaurant by 7:30 AM. We sat in the car & saw Dale Dewberry come up & go inside. We followed suit so he wouldn t be the only one at the table. Eventually, Joe Smith, Bill Swilley, Fred Lindquist, Bob Padovano, Gary Benton, Jimmy Dorsey, and Morris Bailey arrived. Gary had to leave to go pick up a business associate at the airport. Bill Swilley said he used to do that too. Yeah, until he got canned for eating up all the profits! 4 The Ford Running Board June 2014 Page 4 SWEETWATER CREEK TOUR Saturday morning, five couples met at a Waffle House on a clear, cool morning for a tour. They left on time and drove through some scenic areas west of Peachtree Rd. that included where a tornado came through in the mid 1970 s and is now grown back. There was not a lot of traffic and the group made good time that allowed a detour to drive through some of the Fulton County Airport area. The group drove on I-20 west for five miles that included some semi s passing us. The group arrived at the Park at 9:30 A.M. and had time to view the museum and its artifacts. Dale Dewberry joined the group at the park. Our guide, Jesse, met us and we left on our tour at 10:00 A.M. We walked about one half mile to the ruins and Jesse explained a great deal about what took place in the area, New Manchester, along with the construction of the mill in 1846 and how the mill operated and how the people lived and worked there. Our tour allowed us into the mill ruins that are under lock and key. The mill was destroyed in May, 1964 by union forces and the mill workers and their families were shipped by train to Louisville in July. There has been archaeology work at the ruins and the surrounding area to learn more about the mill and the people before the mill was destroyed. We returned to the park interpretive center after the tour that took two hours. Everyone thanked Jesse for such an informative talk. The group left the park heading to Lithia Springs and lunch at Fred s Bar-B-Q. The restaurant personnel were waiting for us and we had a separate dining for lunch. Everyone ordered just what they wanted and there were raves about the Brunswick stew and the pig wings. Following lunch, the group drove to Streetside Classic Cars less than a mile away. There were over 200 cars of all makes and models there under one roof. There was at least one car there would appeal to just about anyone. The day proved to be enjoyable and everyone got home safely. 5 The Ford Running Board June 2014 Page 5 DO YOU KNOW...? David Posey? David is a congenial, tall and powerfully built man who lives in a beautiful log home and likes to wear suspenders. He is also pretty good at spinning-a-yarn. David is a Georgia native who grew up in the Cascade Heights area of Southwest Atlanta. He graduated from Georgia Military Academy in 1952 (the GMA has since been renamed the Woodward Academy). His parents sent David to the Academy because they wanted him to have an opportunity to get a great education. David excelled in track as a sprinter in the 440 yard dash and the mile run. He attended Georgia Tech and studied Aeronautical Engineering. After two years, he joined the U.S. Air Force. David applied for pilot training, winning a commission and his wings in August He was stationed at a number of bases including Lackland in San Antonio, Graham (Marianna, Fl), Williams (Mesa, AZ) and Moody Air Force base in Valdosta. David was assigned air defense patrol, flying F-89 Interceptor jets out of Goose Bay, Labrador and Thule Air Base, Greenland. David says he was scrambled on a regular basis to check out lost Canadian flyers who had strayed from a flight plan. He also had regular target practice runs shooting rockets at icebergs that had broken from the Greenland glacier, the fastest moving glacier in the world at 46 meters/day. Upon leaving active duty in the Air Force, David worked with his dad who was a distributor for Dorsey over-the-road trailers, utility and dump bodies. He also helped to startup and build his dad s refrigerated trailer business. David went on his own by taking a position at Georgia State as supervisor of mechanical and electrical maintenance. This job launched David into the rest of his work career as he successively moved to Johnson HVAC control systems and eventually into the operations side of property management for a number of big-name firms in Atlanta: Cousins, Williams, Turner and Portman. He retired in 2001 but continued as a consultant. David has always been interested in cars, owning a 1936/37 English Austin 4-cyl, a 1932 Ford 5W Coupe that he chopped, channeled, junked the fenders and installed a Merc flathead, a 1951 MG TD that he fitted with a Smitty with a cutout and a mid-30 s Chevy Tudor. When he enlisted in the Air Force, David traded the MG on a 1954 Mercury 2 Dr Hardtop. David s good friend, Don Morris, is responsible for getting him interested in the Early Ford club. The two buddies would meet at Joe Smith s garage and swap tall tales with Putt Smith and George Elias. David and Joyce have two daughters and a recently deceased son. They are blessed with three granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. By: Wayne Deitrich

Fred also discussed plans for the Dream Car exhibit at the High Museum for Saturday, July 26. Our club will have the opportunity to display our cars on the grounds on that day. Fred hopes to arrange for special admission prices and a private tour guide. President Lindquist discussed a tour along the railroad route from Atlanta through Marietta and to Kennesaw that involved the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War. That tour is planned for October 25. Other items on the agenda were the 2014 Eastern National Meet, club meetings and meeting programs. The Shade Tree Mechanic From the achieves of Joe Smith Compression Readings Let s talk about engine compression readings. You can make this check yourself. All you need is a simple low buck compression gauge you can purchase at your auto parts store. Normal compression for a flathead is 100 PSI at cranking speed. Variations of less than 10 PSI between cylinders is not worth worrying about. If low compression readings can be increased by squirting oil into the cylinder via the spark plug holes, then the low compression is due to compression loss thru the rings. Low compression not improved by this process is due to a valve not seating or a gasket failure. Low even compression in two adjacent cylinders may be due to a gasket blown between these cylinders, Gaskets blown in a water jacket will result in water in the cylinders. Gaskets blown to the outside can usually be heard. A high compression reading plus 10 pounds over normal can indicate a carbon buildup on the pistons. Carbon build-up on the pistons can cause a spark knock or pinging when the car is under a heavy load. Pre-ignition can be distinguished from a Club Officers and Board Members 2014 Officers President: Fred Lindquist V.
