1 The Side Draft Volume 25, Issue 04 April 2018 Chairman s Message April Meeting Info Tom James April has arrived but the weather is not cooperating. One day it is sunny and the next day it is rainy. Oh well, spring is near so we can get those classics out. Last month our meeting was at Keen Corvette. We had a great turnout but no corvettes driven due to the rainy weather. There was a discussion as to whether or not to continue with our plans for the 2019 Regional or back out. I am proud to say that after a lengthy discussion a vote was taken and it was unanimous to continue on our current path. We have four (4) sponsors for the event already and have five (5) more whom I believe will follow suit in the near future. This endeavor is a large undertaking but with the amount of volunteers we had for the swap meet, I believe we will have a successful meet. If you missed the , Steve Barrett has stepped back from the position of Membership Chairman. We thank Steve for his commitment to the Club. 2 helping us in other areas that his insight is needed to further the growth of the Club. Terrie James has volunteered to do the membership temporarily until we can find a replacement for Steve. If your 2018 club dues have not been paid, please do so now by remitting a check made payable to QCNCRS in the amount of $20.00 and mailing to Terrie at 7329 Southpointe Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio If you prefer you have the option of paying on the ncrs.org web site by using a credit card or PayPal. We are trying to put a Membership Directory together so please pay your dues now so we can move forward with this project. If you have an interest in the Membership Chairman s position, please contact a board member for further details. The job requires you to have computer and organizational skills. Dale has updated our web site with pictures of our swap meet. This year we over sold the swap area. We had vendors from as far away as Pennsylvania and Tennessee. The gentleman from Tennessee almost sold out his entire trailer. The donations from the silent auction table totaled 65 items. Thanks to Terrie James and Diane Schaible for a great auction. A list is posted on the on the web site who donated to the silent auction, so please take a moment to look at who supported your Club so we can support them. We do not have a final amount yet but I am sure that we will top last year s numbers. The food booth, which had our team of wives with Jerry Hilbert and Dan Lobaugh managing the grill, was a smooth operation like it always is. We sold out of hamburgers this year with the addition of cheese. If you had an opportunity to taste one, they were great. Nice work guys and gals! The rest of the people who volunteered, whether it be to work the doors, move cars, etc., your Club needed your help and you really came through. Gary Griever was our top ticket seller. Gary has always done a fantastic job with the raffle tickets. We thank Gary and Dave Parker for all of their efforts to make our swap meet the success it always is. March QCNCRS Mtg. Minutes Tom Smith Location: Keen Parts Tom James opened the meeting by thanking Tom Keen for having us at his shop. Then we went into some information on the swap meet. The bid and buy booth raised $2100 dollars, that s a 30% increase over last year. This should show our members just how good of a club we have, the floor was perfectly clean and ready to go for Monday. On a sad note, Terry Kesselring passed away from a heart attack, and the club sent flowers. His brother is going to try and step in and help run the business. Tom James welcomed Tom Keen from Keen Parts as a new sponsor for the regional in Invisi-shield is also a sponsor, as well as Discount Tire. A lot of conversation occurred next whether we should continue with the regional. We have $6500 in the bank right now, and if we compare ourselves to Greenville South Carolina regional scheduled for this year, they already have $31000 in their bank account. Tom wants to get enough sponsors to cover all the cost of the convention center and have some left over. We need to help get sponsor s, plus, volunteer at the event, either at the door or working the swap meet. We need to have special Corvette parking that is secured. We will generate income from people judging, people registering their car, trailer parking, swap meet spaces, and spectator fees. After appreciable amount of discussion, measuring the level of enthusiasm that members have about hosting a regional, it was called to a vote, and it passed, with a show of hands. John Ballard, our Judging Chair, was absent, but he told Tom James he had a date in mind for the Fall Chapter meet. The Side Draft 3

4 Minutes (Cont.) Wayne McKee, Treasurer, reviewed our financials, and some of the swap meet numbers. Paul Oslansky, Regional Director, reminded us that no regional has lost money, and there is going to be a NCRS National Board meeting in Indianapolis this week. Joe Eyl, Tech Master, said there will be a technical seminar on engine at Joseph Fiat/Alfa-Romeo on June 2 nd. Also, we are looking at having a judging meet on originality, possibly at Chris Rockenfield s garage. Another idea is to look at how chrome plating is done. Steve Barrett membership chairman stated we have 66 paid members. Please keep us updated if you have moved or changed your address, or phone number, thank you. Tom Smith secretary had nothing new to report. Gary Griever said he got some sales leads on Sunday but did not sell any cars. He stated that the swap meet seemed like it was a great success, and that the he was glad the Shriners could make it. We set the date for next year s swap meet, March 17, Tom James thanked everyone for coming, and the meeting ended. Save The Wave!! Tom Sixth Annual Spring Classic Driving Tour presented by Diehl Insurance April 14, 2018 Saturday Contact Dale Maris to register. This event features a Coffee & Queue Up in the morning, an approximately 130 mile scenic driving tour through the valleys and over the ridges of Southern Ohio and a gathering along the riverfront in New Richmond Ohio at the end. Information and background: This is the sixth annual tour that includes over 25 different vintage and specialty car and motorcycle clubs benefitting 22 different charities and non-profit organizations The Driving Tour organizers provide the route instructions, set up the itinerary, and coordinate the stops along the way. The tour is about 130 miles and includes two or three stops at points of interest along the way for comfort breaks and a few minutes of diversion. There is no charge to the clubs to participate. Last year we had 270 cars preentered from 23 different groups, but we do not have representation from Corvettes. The Queue Up and driving tour departure point is in Amelia, we drive to Adams County, everyone visits one of the Amish Markets and another point of interest and end up in New Richmond at the end. Route instructions are unique to each club, so the Corvettes would not be bottled up behind the Model A club. 5 Greetings From Nik Marinos our Australian Friend Update on 1966 Corvette Restoration Hello mates, just a quick update on the restoration of my 1966 Corvette Roadster. It's all coming together now and we have come across some truly amazing factory production markings such as 222 on the birdcage and also under the rear taillight section. As we pay attention to the rear deck lid we found a ink stamp marking which we make out as showing MARCH We also came across the same date stamp on the door trim cards. Hope you find it as interesting as we have. EDITOR S NOTE: When Nik did research into the first dealer delivery point he found his 1966 Corvette was originally delivered at Queen City Chevrolet in Cincinnati Ohio, USA. This led him to connecting with QCNCRS. He has been very generous with keeping us posted on his progress and interesting discoveries. The Side Draft 5

6 Bruce Bursten Celebrity May 2018 Issue Hot Rod Delux Beginning on page 60 and several pages after that, is a fascinating tale of Bruce Bursten s 1957 Corvette s journey, transformation, hibernation and rebirth. The fascinating part of this story is how it changed personality into a full-blown vintage gasser. Bruce Bursten, a QCNCRS STAR, purchased the 57 with everything he found at the garage of the then current owner. This fellow had his heart set on making a gasser and had all the parts necessary. He also had all original 1957 parts. The 1957 set in Bruce s garage for many years until he decided to put it together as a vintage gasser. If you get the May 2018 issue of Hot Rod Delux you will see the fascinating history of this car and the amazing job Bruce did in completing this amazing project. Most of us have had the privilege of seeing Bruce and his 1957 beauty, but probably very few of us knew the history and the dedicated work Bruce had to achieve to finish such a high level creation.
